On the avoidance of harm...
On the avoidance of harm...
03/13/2003 10:16 AMThere's some fascinating stuff around about the relationship of
depressive illness to strategies of harm avoidance:
Clinical depression is associated with two modulations
occurring simultaneously and chronically, dysphoria and the
generalized stress response. Dysphoria is a modulation that is part of
the harm perception/avoidance axis. This is an emotion we all feel
when we perceive a futility in our current behavior and experience
disappointment. In contrast, we experience anger and aggression when
the disappointment is perceived as being caused by an external source.
When the disappointment causes dysphoria, the modulation shift
increases behavioral inhibition, increases anticipation of harm,
increases harm avoidance, increases introspection, decreases
exploration of the environment, decreases reactivity to external
stimuli, decreases appetite for food and decreases sexual
appetite.
In short, it coordinates functions that allow us to retreat,
introspect and to redirect our efforts in a more effective direction.
In this instance, dysphoria facilitates adaptation to disappointment.

I like that. Dysphoria faciliates adaptation to
disappointment. Lots of interesting things fall out of
investigations like these, but this sense of harm avoidance is the one
that interests me most - that the depressive personality and the
introverted personality are heavily connected. That the wallflower
reacts to disappointment, attributed internally. Fascinating
stuff.

By detecting and processing electrical activity from
lightning strikes, the Insight StrikeFinder helps pilots to avoid
dangerous weather that can turn a small aircraft into a aluminum
coffin. Compiling and interpolating data from thousands of strikes
"gleaned from the background noise," the StrikeFinder lets pilots
determine if that impending storm cloud is really as dangerous as it
might seem, preventing unnecessary detours that might take them
unnecessarily off course.
The StrikeFinder is available in two models - the new model with an
ultra-bright LED display can be had for just $4,700, while the
original models are a relative bargain at $3,900. (Thanks, Rob!)

Wired News Discovers The Tools Of
Registration Avoidance
Wired News Discovers The Tools Of
Registration Avoidance
07/20/2004 11:16 AMWe've explained over and over again why newspapers that think they
need to force users to register to view their paper are making a big
mistake. They're shrinking their ad inventory, pissing off the
readers they do have and
getti
ng dirty useless data on the registrations they are getting.
While many newspapers claim that their audience levels have reached
the same levels as they were before they put in registration,
shouldn't that make them wonder how big they would be if they had no
registration at all? Instead of registrations, shouldn't they be
looking to
give
their readers something of value? Anyway, for those of us who
read an awful lot of news sites and get constantly hung up by annoying
registration required sites, Wired News has put together an article of
tools
people use to get around registrations. Most regular news surfers
probably use all of these pretty frequently, but they include services
like BugMeNot and Mailinator, both of which I find myself using on a
daily basis. Obviously, the decision is up to the sites themselves if
they want to include registration, but it shows a decided lack of
understanding of what makes the web work.

Inheritance Considered Harmful (PDF)
01/14/2003 11:24 AMIt could also be argued that
inheritance falls into the class of programming language features
which are accepted and
instigated without thorough analysis, only to be subsequently rejected
when experience has
shown them to be unhelpful. It would appear that encapsulation is more
relevant and
applicable than inheritance, and its benefits to the maintenance
process are more obvious. In
[12], it is suggested that in future systems, architectures based on
aggregation will be more
appropriate than those based on inheritance. This is particularly true
of systems incorporating
multiple inheritance whose structures have tended to be elaborately
concocted... Lastly, contrary to what was
originally thought, it may be that most OO systems are simply not
amenable to the use of
inheritance, and their functionality does not lend itself well to use
of inheritance. -- Rachel Harrison and Steve Counsell
"tri" Not an easy article to read, but basicly it's saying complex
inheritance trees (more than 3 levels in depth?) are difficult to
maintain, and many designs use inheritance inappropriately. That is
why the big thing in C# and Java today is generics,
and why I was such a fan of templates in C++, even if the syntax was
terrible. PHP has less need for generics because most of its operators
and functions are polymorphic (thx to dynamic typing).

Court Rules Evel Knievel Is A Pimp;
Knievel Rules Judges Are Bimbos
Court Rules Evel Knievel Is A Pimp;
Knievel Rules Judges Are Bimbos
01/04/2005 08:20 PMReally not quite sure what to make of this one, but it's too amusing
to pass up. Apparently, a few years ago, ESPN posted a picture of
famed daredevil Evel Knievel with his arms around two women (one of
whom was his wife) with the caption: "You're never too old to be a
pimp." Knievel, not realizing this was a (weak) attempt at
complimenting him, sued ESPN for defamation. A lower court tossed out
the ruling, and he appealed. Now the Appeals Court has ruled against
him as well, noting that, based on the context no one is actually
going to think Knievel is a "pimp," and, in fact that the statement
was supposed to be a positive one, as the slang of the day suggests.
Knievel, apparently lacking a sense of irony over this particular
case, has responded by
calling the judges
"bimbos." The full quote is: "They ruled against the law. What
good is law in the United States of America if five or six goddamn
bimbos are going to rule against it?" You think he intended that as a
compliment? Anyway, in the meantime, feel free to go on captioning
photos on the web while calling people pimps.

Resume Rules
09/13/2004 02:14 PMUSA Today is claiming that the
rules have changed for resumes, now that they're
mostly sent via email instead of snail mail. However, when they get
into the details, they sound amazingly like the "rules" many of us
learned back in the days before you emailed resumes: focus on results
from previous jobs (read: throw in lots of useless percentages to make
it look like you improved something), use "descriptive or significant
terms" (read: make sure you include the BS buzzwords-of-the-moment to
make it through that first pass filter), don't send the wrong cover
letter to the wrong company (read: don't be completely stupid), and
don't apply "above your skill level" (read: don't waste HR's time so
much). I remember hearing all of these years ago as well, and they
don't seem any different in this "new age of electronic resumes" as
the article would have you believe. Then, of course, there's the
biggest recommendation for this supposed new age: they suggest you
spam as many companies as possible. Again, has there ever been a time
when people were told to send out
fewer resumes? If anything,
it seems like this strategy is the
wrong strategy in the
digital age where HR folks are
so
inundated with resumes that some have found that going back to
paper
resumes is much more effective in getting attention.

astonished voice: "You have the

You know, you learn interesting things from people if you peek at
their music collection. And iTunes music sharing over the
LAN is one of those things that boggles your mind.
I was in a hotel the other day, connected to the local network. I
started iTunes and found like six people sharing their music over
Rendezvous. So I got to peek inside the heads of complete strangers,
sitting somewhere in the building, happily doing their own stuff,
while I see and find interesting new music completely effortlessly.

Some Say New 5GHz Rules Not Enough
Some Say New 5GHz Rules Not Enough
11/14/2003 05:12 PM The New America Foundation, Media Access Project, and some vendors
say that the FCC hasn't gone far enough by adding more spectrum to the
unlicensed band around 5 GHz: They complain that because the spectrum
is high on the band and because of the power constraints set by the
FCC, rural WISPs still can't adequately serve customers. They are
asking for more unlicensed spectrum in the lower bands where signals
can better penetrate interference like trees and travel farther. Rural
operators and vendors who try to serve them have long discussed the
fact that while the existing power limitations may be useful in cities
they unduly strap the potential of wireless in rural communities. Dave
Hughes, who has done tons of research on the use of wireless in remote
areas, has often suggested that the FCC might set different rules in
rural areas. That's a good idea. But I fear that the needs of the
rural communities may not mean enough to the FCC to encourage the
commission to consider accommodating them....
