Battle Against Spam Shifts to
Containment (AP)

AP - There's a new strategy in the spam battle: Call it containment. Filters for blocking junk e-mail from inboxes have improved to the point that doing much more will needlessly kill legitimate e-mail, said Carl Hutzler, America Online Inc.'s anti-spam coordinator. So e-mail gatekeepers are shifting gears.

Slowly losing the spam battle

Slowly losing the spam battle 06/22/2004 03:33 PM
There was a time when I spent all day on my computer. Actually there was a lot of time like that, like pretty much all the time from 1995 until May 21, 2004. And that meant that I had time to go through my email as it arrived, more or less in real time. As the amount of spam I received increased, it became more annoying to go through mail, but it was manageable. I use a combination system, with Spam Assasin as the first line of defense. If it makes it past Spam Assasin and it's from a mailing list, it goes into the appropriate folder. If it's addressed directly to me *and* the sender's address is in my address book, it goes into my Inbox. All else get shuttled into a folder called Suspect. It used to be that I'd keep my eye on Suspect throughout the day, deleting bad stuff, moving legitimate emails from strangers into my Inbox. But now I'm rarely online for more than ~30 minutes a day. Some days I'm not online at all. And so my Suspect mail folder has grown from 1,000 messages to 3,000 to 5,000 to its current tally of 7,990 unread messages. Even if I manage to go through 500 in a day, by the next day I've downloaded hundreds more. I am losing the battle, and I admit defeat. The spammers have won. I've created a new mailing address specifically for readers of the site to use to contact me. It's available on the contact page. If you need to reach me, please use that, as I'll be sorting that from now on into a different folder. And if you sent something and you haven't gotten a response -- and you're not likely to be in my address book -- you might want to resend. The chance of me getting through 8,000 unread mostly spam messages any time this year is slim to none.

German University gives up Spam Battle

German University gives up Spam Battle 05/24/2004 07:44 AM

Seems a German university has given up the battle on spam seem they where seeing delays of up to one week in the delay of e-mail. The 20 computers they where using was breaking down under a load of 100,000 unprocessed messages.

I am sure the wording is not quite right as I process nearly 10,000 message a day of which 95% of them are spam on a single PC using several filtering and verification messages. So is this a new tactic by spammers to overwhelm the resources of e-mail servers to process the spam. [Slashdot ]

Unsolicited e-mail, called spam, seems to persist with all the resilience of a plague of mosquitoes. Are those who yearn for a spam-free existence ever likely to see their wish granted? Unfortunately, say some analysts, the answer may be a resounding no.

Yahoo Releases Anti-Spam Technique For
Upcoming Standards Battle

Yahoo Releases Anti-Spam Technique For
Upcoming Standards Battle
05/18/2004 06:16 PM
One thing that you can guarantee in the technology world is that there will never be a shortage of standards battles. While AOL is supporting Sender Policy Framework (SPF) as their way of authenticating email senders, Microsoft is pushing their "caller ID" method of combating spoofed spam and Yahoo has been pushing ahead with their own DomainKeys proposal. Today, Yahoo is making some news by announcing that they're releasing the technology as a standard. A standard for whom? So far, it seems like it's just Yahoo. Are we going to reach a point where our mail servers are going to need to separately check DomainKeys, SPF, email Caller ID, some giant useless "do not spam" database, and twenty other anti-spam systems before they'll be able to forward mail? Is it really a "standard" if everyone has their own?

Finance Spam Passing Drug Spam While
Porn Spam Is Washed Up
05/24/2004 05:37 PM
The latest study on spam trends appears to show that financial spam is outpacing pharmaceutical spam - though, honestly, so much of both is coming out that it's really hard to imagine that this matters at all. Meanwhile, it seems that porn spam is increasingly less interesting to spammers as the numbers have been on a noticeable decline for quite some time. No matter what, though, it appears that CAN-SPAM has done absolutely nothing to slow down the amount of spam sent.

I am now getting 2,000+ spams a day. There are 1,440 minutes in a day The rate of incoming spams is therefore getting close to the interval it takes me to check my email and dispose of a single spam: By the time I'm done checking, more spam has arrived. That is the point at which the spam droplets form a continuous stream. And that is the point at which no interval of my life will ever be spam-free again....
