1Q (AP)
04/19/2005 08:46 AMAP - General Motors Corp., the world's largest automaker, said Tuesday
it lost $1.1 billion in the first quarter, clobbered by rising
health care costs, lukewarm response to some new models and special
charges. The loss at its worldwide automotive operations more than
doubled to $1.3 billion, most of it in North America.

General Motors miffed at LA Times
review, pulls all advertising
04/09/2005 01:12 AMBreezing through today’s news wires, I was surprised and
disturbed to see an article at the Beeb entitled GM Stops Advertising
in LA Times. According to the report, Dan Neil, Los Angeles Times
automotive writer, had an article published in which he called for the
ouster of GM Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner, and now General Motors is
refusing to run any adverts in the Times. Earlier this week, General
Motors announced that the same…

GM in trouble: "If you erased the
company name from the balance sheet and showed it to a forensic
accountant, the recommended treatment would probably be to seek
protection from creditors by filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. "
GM's troubles are as much a result of the
exploding costs of health
care as they are due to the company's
dropping market
share. In
Canada increasing
health care costs (PDF with many
charts) are taking a greater and greater share of
government expenditures. In the US
it's hurting big employers and
regular people.
But either way the problem doesn't seem likely to get better any time
soon.

Apple should be hitting general public
hard with Tiger promos
Apple should be hitting general public
hard with Tiger promos
03/24/2005 08:32 PMSometimes it’s hard to understand Apple Computer’s marketing strategy
in regards to the lack of promotion for its upcoming products.
Take Mac OS X Tiger for example. The latest reports in a number of
Apple enthusiast sites claim Tiger will be released to manufacturing
before the end of the month. And from what we’ve heard so far, this is
supposed to be the best thing Apple has done since the 1984 launch of
the Macintosh. Not yet for sale, Tiger sits in the top 10 on Amazon’s
top electronics sellers list.
Last evening while watching “Survivor” on TV (and without even
realizing I was thinking about Apple Computer) I suddenly had the
desire to see a teaser commercial for Tiger. Can you imagine how hard
any other company in the world would be working on promotions if they
had a product half as good as Tiger coming out in a few weeks? Look
how Sony built the hype and suspense surrounding its new PlayStation
Portable in North America.
Apple seems to continually ignore great opportunities for marketing,
instead relying on the “free advertising” provided by the Mac media,
the odd news story picked up by the mainstream media and the big
surprise product launches by the company’s head showman Steve Jobs.
While these shows may have been fun for the five percent of the world
population that use Macs, the routine is getting a little stale even
for them after 20 years. And now thanks to the incredible success of
the one product Apple has spent advertising dollars on, the iPod, the
mainstream public is primed like never before to hear the hype from
Apple about its computers.
The two new marketing heavyweights joining Apple recently – Julia
Miller, formerly Microsoft’s worldwide marketing and sales executive
for Xbox Live, and Allison Johnson, former senior vice president of
marketing for HP, will hopefully breathe some fresh air into Apple’s
marketing department and bring it into the 21st century.

less PhDs -- in general or just in the
US?
12/30/2003 01:15 AMWell, one more thing I found notable. According to this
article the number of new Science PhDs per year is still falling
in the US. I wonder if this means that they are falling in general or
simply that a lot of the people that would have got them in the US are
just not doing that, choosing to do it in their home countries or
elsewhere. Considering that more than half the engineering PhDs in the
US are from foreign-born students (as the article notes), even a small
dip in that number (due to less travel, tighter immigration laws,
whatever) would definitely be noticeable.
