SkypeIn and Skype Voicemail Beta

SkypeIn and Skype Voicemail Beta 04/18/2005 08:24 AM
Skype, the Global Internet Telephony Company, announced the public beta launch of SkypeIn and Skype Voicemail, two new premium services available in the latest download versions of Skype software for Linux, MAC OS X, Pocket PC and Windows platforms. SkypeIn provides an affordable, flexible alternative to costly mobile phone roaming charges with SkypeIn personal numbers. SkypeIn customers can receive inbound calls to their Skype client from ordinary fixed telephones or mobile phones while they travel worldwide, providing seamless interconnectivity without having to pay costly roaming charges. Skype Voicemail enables users to manage incoming voicemail messages, making their Skype usage more ubiquitous.

“Skype is setting new standards for modern communications by expanding premium services that extend Skype portability, mobility and ubiquity across a variety of platforms, including the traditional phone network,” said Niklas Zennström, Skype CEO and co-founder. “SkypeIn and Skype Voicemail enhance the basic free Skype and now allows friends, family and colleagues not connected to the Internet an inexpensive and convenient way to contact members of our global user base. With Skype’s new premium offerings, travellers will now be able to save thousands of dollars on roaming charges.”

The new premium offerings coincide with another major milestone for Skype: the 100 millionth download of the software as recorded today. Skype has now enabled more than 7 billion high-quality minutes of talk time for Skype users worldwide, further establishing Skype as the feature-rich communications choice of cost- and quality-conscious users.

Skype Adds SkypeIn for Mac

Skype Adds SkypeIn for Mac 04/04/2005 08:48 PM
Glenn Fleishman (~160 words)

Skype Adds SkypeIn for Mac -- I've written a bit about Skype, a voice-over-IP program for Mac, Windows, and Linux that offers great quality service, five-user conference calling, and outbound calls at low rates to the regular phone network (see "Road Warrior Scramble" in TidBITS-771). But wait! There's more. Skype is now testing SkypeIn, an inbound telephone number attached to your Skype account. Other companies offer a similar service, but typically only in a bundle. For instance, Vonage has what they call a soft phone service, but it's an add-on to an existing Vonage full-service account.

wb1001b.jpg imageJapan's WellTone has a new USB Skype handset coming out which may or may not contain a version of Skype in its internal 64MB of memory. The uncertainty lies in how the company is yet to receive permission from Skype to include their software. Other than that, the "Skype USB Handyphone (WB-2001)" is your standard for a USB handset.

Skype Goes Mac

Skype Goes Mac 08/31/2004 09:24 AM
Skype just launched a public beta version of its new OS X client software. This means the Voice over IP software that has almost 10 million registered users is now on every major desktop platform -- another major step forward for the product and the people behind it. I've been playing with a pre-beta version of the OS X software, and had some difficulty. The new version does seem to be an improvement. I already have VoIP at home, but this will be quite useful when I'm traveling and find a broadband connection, among other things. At the moment, I'm finding the most intriguing feature of Skype to be its built-in encryption. Since the product also offers instant messaging, I now have something that none of the big IM vendors are bothering to offer individual end users like me: end-to-end encryption. I'm asking my IM "buddies" to consider switching to Skype for this reason. Especially when I'm on a wireless system, IM shouldn't be visible to the entire world. I had a conversation with Niklas Zennström, Skype's co-founder and CEO, yesterday. It's no secret that he has big ambitions for this product and company, and some of those ambitions are starting to be more clear. One is connecting with other kinds of gear than just PCs. Zennström told me that Skype is launching a set of APIs, or applications programming interfaces, to help hardware vendors put the product on their handsets and other equipment. He said Siemens is already doing so. I wish Skype was more open in some ways, such as using industry standards. But the company has done a lot right so far, and it's hard to argue with its achievements. (I'll have more on all this in tomorrow's column.) Skype is a true phenomenon of the Net.
