Thoughts
Oh and our additional server capacity will be up and running with
72 to 96 hours. That will enable some of the more intensive
things we want to do as well as make everything more reliable in
general.
Please note that we may be offline Tuesday
night from Midnight EST for a bit.
If this changes I'll let you
know.
We've all heard it said "It takes a village to raise a child" and
perhaps in these complex times, "it takes a village to make a
product". I'm getting great feedback from all over the
globe. Thank you to everyone. Examples:
- Over in Greece, I
got good thoughts on scheduling for the "crawler" (I don't think of it
as that since its not recursive (well kinda but ..))
- From Holland,
came good thoughts on finding more RSS urls and other important
things
- And Andy Edmonds
tonight helped me tune the query parser for *much better* search
results. Thanks !
Not a ton of new features to report except for the tuned query
parser. A lot of work on back end stuff and getting ready for
more server capacity. A cool new feature, very appropriate for
the times, is coming in a few days.More when I'm comfortable with its
capabilities.
Michael Bernstein
sent a few great links for the Wrox debacle: 1
, 2, 3, 4, 5. Now when he
was doing his research, he found that Google was indexing Feedster
pages!!!! See the 4th link from the bottom on this Google page. How'd that happen ?
Note: You'll notice I didn't use my convention of
[_Go_] for the links above. Here's why -- we're starting to add
link anchor text analysis in and clearly if I know "Andy Edmonds" is
related to urls at mozilla / surfmind.com, we're going to do a better
job.

across.
Orange
Alert from Chris Pirillo.
Oh and did I mention that we're up to almost 80,000 posts in the
database ? Very cool.

LG builds "smart washer"
LG builds "smart washer"
09/17/2004 12:40 PMEvery now and then, I come across some news that is just plain
odd. This would have to be one of those stories.
If the military can build a missile that can fly through your window
and build satellites that can read your license plate... why can't you
get a washing machine that helps tell you how best to wash those silk
PJs? Well, now you can.
A new washing machine developed by the Dai Nippon Printing Company can
read special smart tags on clothing and instruct the user the best
method with which to wash the clothes. Not only that, but the LG-built
unit can keep track of how many times a particular item has been
washed, what material it is made out of, and can even send an email or
SMS when your load of laundry is complete.
Just what will they think of next?
(My guess is probably a smart dryer.)

/cs.IR/0311015There is a wealth of information
available on the Internet and in separate repositories like university
library databases. It would save time to be able to search all digital
resources using one interface. Researchers from Huazhong University of
Science and Technology in China have come up with a distributed
information retrieval system that promises to help. The system could
eventually become part of the Internet infrastructure as an extension
of the domain name service. This has been added to
Deep Web Research Subject
Tracer™ Information Blog.

Microsoft builds a better Bit Torrent
Microsoft builds a better Bit Torrent
06/17/2005 03:18 PMResearchers at Microsoft's computer science lab in Cambridge have
developed a peer-to-peer filesharing system that they say overcomes
the scheduling problems associated with existing distribution
protocols such as Bit Torrent.
The researchers claim download times are between 20-30 per cent
faster, using their network coding approach, than on systems that only
code at the server, and between 200 and 300 per cent faster than
distributing un-encoded information.

Man builds machine gun out of a power
drill
02/01/2005 09:48 PMTen points for ingenuity - zero points for common sense:
Hämeen
Sanomat (Finnish, translation mine): "An 80-year old man
built a machine gun out of a power drill. As he went to the police to
get a license for it, to his great surprise he was charged with a
breach of the firearms law. The court decided that he was acting in
good faith, so he was found not guilty, but the gun was confiscated,
and is likely to end up in a gun museum.
"The weapon uses .22 caliber ammunition and can fire up to
420 rounds/minute."
(Click here to see the gun in action - 4.3 MBytes MPEG-PS.
Quicktime does not seem to understand it, but VLC and MPlayer seem to
work well. I have no idea who owns the copyright on this (a good
reason to embed, say, a CC license to your files), but
I'll take it off if someone asks.)
