08/19/2004 05:16 PM
Horizon DataSys Inc. announced on Tuesday the release of Drive Vaccine, a cross-platform solution that provides security for PCs and Macs in hybrid environments. The company is targeting schools, libraries, government agencies and other organizations that employ mixed networks with multiple users for each machine. Drive Vaccine creates a write-protected area in the hard drive on each client computer and makes all changes, from deleting files to installing software, in a separate area, allowing the user to roll back the operating system upon restart and leave it the way it was for the next person. Each end-user license is US$39, with volume and educational discounts available. Drive Vaccine runs on Mac OS X, although Horizon DataSys does not note the minimum version required on its Web site.

Gambling Machines Much Safer Than
Electronic Voting Machines

Gambling Machines Much Safer Than
Electronic Voting Machines
06/14/2004 03:33 AM
It appears that making sure gambling is fair is much more important than making sure our elections are fair. One of the defenses pulled out by those who want to keep going with existing electronic voting machines is that no one seems to complain about electronic gambling machines. Perhaps that's because electronic gambling machines are held to a much higher standard than electronic voting machines. This NY Times editorial lists six different ways in which gambling machines in Nevada are under much more scrutiny than electronic voting machines. These include things like the fact that the state requires copies of the source code of all electronic gambling software, as well as their stringent licensing procedure for any company that wishes to sell electronic gambling machines. Employees of any such company have to go through background checks to make sure they have no criminal record. Considering that Diebold had convict ed felons involved with their electronic voting systems - you wonder if a similar licensing procedure might make sense for voting machines as well.

Apple Finalizes iDisk WebDAV Migration

Apple Finalizes iDisk WebDAV Migration 11/06/2003 12:20 PM
In an email to .Mac members, Apple has announced that on December 2, 2003, iDisks will have coverted completely to WebDAV protocol. This means that OS 9 users will no longer be able to use the Finder to connect but will instead need to use a third party WebDAV client. OS X has WebDAV capabilities built in, so OS X users should notice no change. On December 2, affected users (those using OS 9) will be able to download files from the iDisk but will not be able to upload. On Janary 20, 2004, however, the only protocol that will access the iDisk will be WebDAV and all OS 9 access will need to be with a WebDAV client. Goliath is a free, open-source WebDAV client, and is recommended by Apple for those who are still running OS 9.

TGn Sync Wins, But Must Compromise in
802.11n

TGn Sync Wins, But Must Compromise in
802.11n
03/19/2005 02:24 AM

A report from the IEEE 802.11n task group says that TGn Sync won 56 percent of the vote: However, in the IEEE voting rules, that only provides provisional support. TGn Sync must now solicit more than 75 percent of the vote for their draft to become the proposal that's refined and eventually ratified. If they can't achieve a 75-percent supermajority for a revision of their proposal in May--or possibly even subsequent meetings--the vote rolls back to trying to get 50 percent support for a single proposal to move forward on.

In the 802.15.3a group on ultrawideband, for instance, no proposal reached the supermajority, and the process has been stalled while individual alliances and companies have separately moved forward on developing against their own group or company standards.

Update: Wi-Fi Planet has a great summary of this with a bit more procedural detail.
