Catching up with Harry

Catching up with Harry 02/17/2004 11:57 PM

I'm not sure how I missed this, but Harry Fueck's new book The PHP Anthology was published by SitePoint back in December, as a hefty 2 volume epic. Harry is the guru behind PHP Patterns and really knows his stuff. While the book is at first glance a cookbook for solving web related problems, Harry also uses it as a platform for teaching sensible development practises:

Between the lines I've focused on teaching OOP by example, partly by developing classes in the book and also by taking advantage of Open Source class libraries I'm familiar with; in most cases projects from PEAR.

That's also where I'd say The PHP Anthology is unique, in it aims to get readers to avoid re-inventing wheels already done many times in PHP. Although many of the subjects have been seen before (often online), the focus here is either to use an Open Source class library or put one together, solving a problem once and for all, as opposed a hacked script that goes half way.

Sample chapters from the books are available online, including an excellent explanation of caching techniques. Harry is also one of my co-bloggers over at SitePoint where he writes about (you guessed it) PHP in Dynamically Typed.

Harry Fuecks: About PHP usage

Harry Fuecks: About PHP usage 05/19/2004 01:30 AM
Another (guess) big user group which is largely ignored is those employing PHP on corporate Intranets / Extranets (that includes me so I've got opinions). I would hazard a guess that of the top 1000 companies in the world, 80%+ have PHP in action somewhere (although probably also unaware of the fact at a managerial level).

This group faces an entirely different set of problems - performance is often less important, traffic being relatively low. Being able to integrate PHP with a whole range of "back office" systems as well as desktop applications is the biggest issue for this group, integration with Windows being the #1 problem.

Great post, Harry. Most of my PHP work is on corporate Intranets/Extranets. Integration with MS Office is the biggest desktop hurdle we had to face. For reports and document generation, this can be solved by generating MS-Word files in RTF format or Excel format. There are several such document libraries available (both commercial and open source).

PHP allows you to call COM objects. However if integration to COM objects is required, then writing XML-RPC stubs that communicate with servers running COM objects is definitely more robust than calling COM from PHP.

I must admit performance is still an issue, especially if you are rolling out web applications that are used by large numbers of users, eg. for online transaction processing. Fortunately, bandwidth is normally not a problem, except for Extranets that allow connection via modem.

Thanks Harry or Strategy Patterns Really
Work

Thanks Harry or Strategy Patterns Really Work I know that we all see references to different things on blogs all the times where someone says "It's Cool" but then you always wonder "Does it Work?". Well yesterday I put my $$$ where my mouth (typing) is and decided to find out. A month or so ago I blogged about a PHP programming technique called "Strategy Patterns" for validating user input. I took a quick look at the code (which was good) and looked at the author's reputation (which was good) and gave it a recommendation. [_Go_] Yesterday I hit a point where I needed to code exactly that type of situation -- so I decided rather than yet another set of if statements, I'd try it out. So I surfed over to the location above, the Go link, and copied the code into VI. It just plain worked. And that's really the highest praise I can give -- when code just plain works, that's awesome. Then I found out that my model for usernames was a little different so I quickly hacked in a change to one of the regex's. And that just plain worked. And then I realized that any username must not only fit an existing format (say 6 characters, any alpha, number, . or @ but also needs to NOT exist int the database already -- I actually knew this but Harry's code didn't allow for it. So I was able to add that in just a few minutes. And, best of all, it was neater and more elegant than the way I would have handled it. So I have to say "Thanks Harry" -- Harry Fueckes is the cool guy who wrote this and it was much appreciated. Nice Job! You can bet that I'll be visiting PHP Patterns more often. He has more recently added a piece about Data Access which looks quite good. [_Go_]
