04/04/2005 04:27 PMIf you look around the net for images you find a lot of sites that
charge you a arm and a leg for access to royalty free images. I
actually subscribe to one service and have paid for some images
before.
Well that is until today. I want to throw a little coin in this
person tip jar, that put up the linked article and listed a huge
number of sites that offer royalty free images. I can't tell you how
many times I have been looking for a picture to find it and find out
company wants to charge me a $1000.00 a year to get access to their
stock photo's. I am a very happy Geek this morning. [Robin Good]

The Free Software Community After 20
Years: With great but incomplete
success, what now?
01/05/2004 08:34 AMIt was twenty years ago today that I quit my job at MIT to begin
developing a free software operating system, GNU. While we have never
released a complete GNU system suitable for production use, a variant
of the GNU system is now used by tens of millions of people who mostly
are not aware it is such. Free software does not mean "gratis"; it
means that users are free to run the program, study the source code,
change it, and redistribute it either with or without changes, either
gratis or for a fee.

New LOTR Easily Available Online, But
Still Had Great Opening
New LOTR Easily Available Online, But
Still Had Great Opening
12/22/2003 12:43 PMAt what point does the movie industry realize that maybe (just maybe)
the world doesn't work the way they think it works? I don't know how
many folks went to the movies this weekend, but I went Saturday night
and there were huge lines of folks to see the final chapter in the
Lord of the Rings Trilogy: "The Return of the King". All showings
were easily sold out. In fact, it looks as though
it's setting records for how much money it took in over
its first five days. At the same time, though, the industry is
complaining that
the movie is available online. It appears that the
industry has some blinders on to reality: people want to see these
movies in the theater. They're selling out a record number of
showings and bringing in a stunning amount of money. If the
industry's fears were true, then everyone would just be sitting at
home downloading the movie, which is clearly available. Instead,
people want to see it at the theater. Going to the movies is a social
experience. You go with friends, and watch it on a big screen with a
great sound system and lots of others in the audience to enjoy the
overall experience. If the industry is really worried about
downloads, they should focus on making the
movie-going
experience even more enjoyable - and not just worry about where
the content is available.

Mobile Cartoon Visuals of Real Baseball
Mobile Cartoon Visuals of Real Baseball
04/11/2005 08:19 AM
It's probably not to hard to infer from the lack of mobile
software coverage that most applications, on the whole, don't interest
me a bit. That said, I think this new 'Digital Stadium' application on
DoCoMo's phones is sort of brilliant, leveraging the graphical
abilities of the phone to display a cartoon representation of a live
baseball game. Sure, it won't have all the scratching and vacant
stares that make real baseball so captivating, but it's probably a lot
easier to stream (and watch) than a live video feed.

How Do You Find Good Music Online?
How Do You Find Good Music Online?
12/02/2003 12:14 AMWe've been arguing here for a long time that offering up music for
free online is a great (free!) way for musicians to promote
themselves. The problem, then, is what happens when lots of musicians
follow through on such a plan and
there's so much music out there that it's
impossible to find what you like? The record labels would have
you believe that's why they have A&R guys: to sort through the crap
and provide you with the best of the best. Unfortunately, these days,
the big labels aren't necessarily looking for the best of the best,
but the most marketable to the widest possible audience. The way I
find music is that I have a few friends whose musical tastes I trust.
They know what I like, and when they say, "hey, you should check out
this band," I usually do - and, more often than not, I'm happy I did.
Building up those same sorts of "trusted recommender" systems online
is possible, but not that easy. Part of the original promise of music
sharing networks was that you could find those with similar tastes and
look through their collections to find other artists you hadn't heard
of - or better yet, communicate with the person directly to see who
they might recommend. The record labels, of course, hate this idea,
because it takes away their function, and puts promotions into the
hands of just about anyone. I like this method much better than the
"collaborative filtering" process that's becoming popular again -
partly because the record labels can harness it themselves instead of
leaving the recommending up to the riff raff. Collaborative filtering
looks for all the people who are sort of similar to what you like and
looks for other musicians they tend to like, but which you haven't
rated yet. The problem here, again, is that it gets watered down.
You're only discovering new acts after many others have, and some of
the more obscure but great acts may get filtered out. Still, there
are some intriguing new collaborative filtering tools that people are
gravitating towards. The article discusses the relatively new
iRATE radio which has been
getting a lot of attention lately. It's basically an online jukebox
that uses collaborative filtering to try to hone in on the music you
like.
