Defense fund for Bit Torrent indexer

Defense fund for Bit Torrent indexer 12/30/2004 02:45 AM
Cory Doctorow: LokiTorrent is a BitTorrent indexing site -- like the lamented Suprnova -- that has been threatened with legal action by the MPAA for telling people where to download torrent files that allow them to download video and other large data-objects. Unlike some of the other Torrent indexers that shut down last week, LokiTorrent is mounting a legal defense. They're trying to raise a legal defense fund of $30,000, and they've made $11,500 in the first 12 hours. Link (via /.)

Is HTML on Its Way Out?

Is HTML on Its Way Out? 03/20/2003 01:05 PM
A mere eight years ago, the "HT" in HTML stood as much for "hot" as it did for "hypertext." This language of the Internet was on everyone's lips, from bedroom coders to boardroom capitalists. Now, though, XML, XHTML and other Internet languages are nimbly supplementing -- and in some cases supplanting -- their older and stodgier cousin.

XML, Not HTML

XML, Not HTML 01/22/2004 02:57 AM

Because enough people seem to be getting confused by my previous blog entry, let me clarify that I am talking about XML error handling and not HTML error handling. Obviously given the current state of the Web, a browser must be extremely good at handling malformed HTML and emulate WinIE as much as possible. We of course are actively working on that with Safari.

The reason I brought up HTML error handling while talking about XML error handling was to point out how much time and effort it costs developers simply to handle malformed content. Also for those who mistakenly interpreted this as an attack on WinIE, of course it isn't. WinIE had to emulate Netscape's error handling, so if you want to blame anyone, blame Netscape.

Right now the browsers that handle XML *are* draconian in their handling, and I see no reason why that would change in the future (unless WinIE weighs in with a tolerant XML parser). In effect as far as Web browsers are concerned we draconians have already won. :)

XmlHttpRequest

XmlHttpRequest 06/01/2004 06:51 PM

I recently mentioned XmlHttpRequest to a collegue as possible solution to his problem and found that he didn't know about it despite the fact that many DHTML apps are simply impossible to do without it.  As I mentioned before, people tend to stop looking around when they are busy.  Well, even meercats know better...

FYI, XmlHttpRequest allows you to make HTTP requests and process responses from within a webpage.  It was first implemented by Microsoft as an ActiveX object.  The shocker is that it's now considered nearly ubiquitous because other browsers support the feature as well.  For more info, here are some useful links to get you started:

Have fun.

Dynamic HTML and XML: The XMLHttpRequest
Object
05/15/2004 09:42 PM
As deployment of XML data and web services becomes more widespread, you may occasionally find it convenient to connect an HTML presentation directly to XML data for interim updates without reloading the page. Thanks to the little-known XMLHttpRequest object, an increasing range of web clients can retrieve and submit XML data directly, all in the background. To convert retrieved XML data into renderable HTML content, rely on the client-side Document Object Model (DOM) to read the XML document node tree and compose HTML elements that the user sees.

Still, imagine the excitement of a three hour movie detailing the intricacies of drying paint. Unfortunately, as fast as it is, it can only shoot 100 frames at a time—oh, and it costs $200,000. Still, it won't be long before we'll be able to watch paint dry in color.

U.K. Rails Getting Wi-Fi

U.K. Rails Getting Wi-Fi 11/10/2003 10:54 PM
Broadreach is building Wi-Fi hot spots in 20 stations along Virgin's west coast rail line in the U.K.: The hot spots will just cover the stations. The article says the network will "likely" use satellite for the downstream and cellular for the up. The operator of the east coast line in the U.K., GNER, is also building hot spots over its stations. Busy train lines in the U.S. should be working on this too. One in San Jose already is, but I haven't heard of any Wi-Fi coverage over lines on the east coast along busy corridors around Washington, D.C., or New York....

Riding the Rails

Riding the Rails 07/25/2004 09:09 AM

David Heinemeier Hansson has published the first release of Rails, his MVC implementation for Ruby. Rails is the system David developed to power BaseCamp, the 37 Signals project management app. David had previously released Active Record, his O-R mapping layer for Rails, which is the slickest method of database access I've ever seen, so I'm excited to see what his MVC implementation looks like.

We heard David speak at "The Building of BaseCamp" ,and he's a pretty impressive guy. Most of the folks I've heard from with his level of skill have been employees of Microsoft or Sun.
