AP - Having trouble navigating cyberspace, kids? Never fear — George Jetson is here. Jetson, Kim Possible and other pop-culture characters are part of a new interactive game designed to help children understand and stay safe on the Internet. Called MySecureCyberspace, the game was the result of a collaboration between Carnegie Mellon University's Cylab and its Information Networking Institute.

Wishing For A Video Game To Explain
Cancer To Kids
06/28/2004 05:22 AM
Every time you hear about the Make-A-Wish Foundation, it usually involves a kid who wants to meet an athlete, musician or movie star. Those requests probably aren't all that difficult to fulfill. However, when Ben Duskin, a child with Leukemia, decided he wanted a video game that could teach children what cancer was all about, it turned out to be a fairly difficult request. Eventually, though, the Foundation tracked down a game programmer from LucasArts who worked with Ben to create the game he wanted and which he hopes will help other kids understand what they're going through. They're now offering the game as a free download off their website. It doesn't sound like the most sophisticated game, but obviously that's not the point.

Lucas Arts makes a Make-A-Wish
kids-wiith-leukemia game
06/29/2004 03:40 PM
A kid with leukemia worked with the Make A Wish foundation and Lucas Arts to produce a leukemia-themed kids-game.
The game he created is about fighting cancer, and it reflects Ben's own battle with leukemia. It takes place inside the body, on a playfield of mutating cells. The hero, a boy on a hovering skateboard, uses high-tech weapons to destroy these cells by collecting the seven shields that protect against common side effects of chemotherapy.

It's not easy to get the shields -- they're in the hands of monsters that have to be zapped. FireMonster guards the fever shield and hurls molten lava. VampMonster guards the bleeding shield and sends out vampire bats. Robarf guards the vomit shield "with big smelly green globs." And QBall, guardian of the hair-loss shield, shoots out billiard balls.

Trouble with Online Games

Trouble with Online Games 07/16/2004 08:41 PM

Wired reports on Electonic Arts' decision to shut down UXO (Ultima X: Odyssey) and goes on to elaborate on the pain and cost of running a massive online games.  While developing the game client and server itself is within the realm of developers' abilities, creating the content of a virtual world and keeping it an interesting place to live in is a difficult and neverending task that most developers will find difficult to manage, even if they have a deep pocket like EA.

The missing ingredient in today's online games that full 3D online world developers forgot to translate from MUD (Multiple User Dungeon, a text-only online world) is community participation in building and maintaining the online world.  Instead of hiring legions of artists and area designers, they should have leveraged the creative power of the players themselves by creating tools and offering incentives.  With such legions of superusers, all they needed was a much smaller staff to control the legion.

Player participation in running online worlds should not stop with content but also operation.  Let the superusers handle most of the in-game headaches such as user complaints and conflict moderation.  Going beyond that, superusers should also be used to play NPC roles such as monsters, shop owners, etc.

Unfortunately, EA looked only at the numbers and chose the easy way out instead of using UXO as an opportunity to explore more creative options.

Online Games Having Trouble With The
Whole Free Speech Concept

Online Games Having Trouble With The
Whole Free Speech Concept
12/12/2003 08:51 PM
I'm beginning to wonder if the various creators of online community games really thought through all of the issues they were raising in setting up the games. They were, in some sense, creating a new space, where they were acting as the government. In most cases, they have terms of service - but that's not quite the same as a constitution. So, now, when real-life problems move across the virtual/real boarder, they're struggling. We've discussed this before, and looked at how some are trying to answer the question, but Salon has an interesting article looking at the latest happenings in the Sims Online. One member has been acting as a sort of National Enquirer of the online world and posting articles to a blog. He focuses on the "bad" people in the world - the scammers and other questionable characters. There are some interesting legal issues raised by the people he talks to - such as the underage boy who plays a female character in the game and is engaged in virtual prostitution for in-game money, which can be sold for real cash on eBay. Is that really prostitution? There's also the "Sims Shadow Government" that we've discussed before to try to deal with these situations in the game. It appears that they felt the real government (that is, the company that puts the Sims Online) is absent and so they're there to fill the void. In the meantime, the folks at EA, who run the Sims Online, don't appear to have given this much thought. Instead of dealing with these issues, they've kicked the reporter out and closed down his account, saying he violated their policies. In other words, they seem to be going with something of a despot government that will exile and censor whoever raises any threatening questions. That's their choice, of course, as it is their world. However, it probably won't get them the best reputation as a virtual place to live. How many people do you know who are actively immigrating into countries run by dictators?

Are Video Games Good For Kids?

Are Video Games Good For Kids? 08/11/2004 05:30 PM
While it does seem that the anti-videogame folks blow the danger of video games way out of proportion, a new festival seems to be going in the other direction by claimin g video games are good for kids. It's such a broad statement that it has to be untrue. Certainly, some video games might be good for kids, in helping them deal with differe nt kinds of challenges, but it hardly seems like random anecdotal evidence (about all that's presented in the article) proves that video gaming is "good." For example, the article includes this sentence: "Dr Judy Robertson, of Edinburgh University, said some children had told her during computer games workshops that playing violent games did not result in violence in real life." Just because some kids say something doesn't necessarily make it true (even if it probably is true). If they really want to show this, wouldn't it make more sense to actually promotes the ways that video games can be helpful to kids, rather than just declaring it so? I'm all for real studies that show the positive impact games have for kids, but hyping up something without substance just makes the arguments seem weak.

Getting Kids To Program Old School Video
Games
04/06/2005 06:48 AM
It seems that every recent story about Atari has been about their attempts (in their modern form -- quite different from the original Atari) to make a killing on the nostalgia market, offering up classic games from years back to today's adults -- either on computers or (increasingly) on mobile phones. However, it appears that many feel the basic concepts of old Atari videogames are still valuable for game designers to learn -- resulting in a competition to design new games for the Atari 2600. Of course, there's one twist: the games needed to be created in 24 hours. While the story is amusing to read, what it really does is remind people that, despite all the amazing graphics found in today's game, a game is still about gameplay at its core -- which many of today's game designers seem to forget.
