Read what happens when a new Starbucks corporate office employee gets
into a bizarre email exchange with a prankster pretending to be the
CEO / president.
I know this may seem petty, but Ms. Crisholm should have
told you how we feel about goatees or facial hair in our corporate
offices. While I realize they may be considered stylish and acceptable
in our Starbucks outlets, we ask that men refrain from wearing them in
our corporate offices as we are trying to uphold a certain image. That
includes earrings and other piercings on men, which I do not tolerate
at all. Unfortunately, there's little we can do about the appearance
of our counter people no matter how much we try. I certainly wish this
weren't the case, because most of them have absolutely no loyalty to
our brand, and they have done nothing but tarnish our image. I hope
you understand our position. Please have it removed by
Monday.

Cross the Columbia and Two Access Points
Cost over $30,000
08/13/2004 03:50 PMVancouver, Washington, gets its first free public Wi-Fi for a total of
over $30,000 and after a year of planning: Vancouver is a popular town
to live in for folks who like to shop just across the Columbia River
in sales-tax-free Oregon and live in income-tax-free Washington. It's
also a less-bustling town than its neighbor, Portland, edging right
into undeveloped countyside, even as it's become a sprawl-y bedroom
community. While Personal Telco in Portland has what they report as
over 100 active nodes in their free network, including prominent ones
in Pioneer Courthouse Square in downtown, Vancouver's first free
public space Wi-Fi appears to be a 3 Mbps Internet feed over two
antennas relayed from a nearby building into Esther Short Park. The
project involved $30,000 from HP in goods and services as a grant,
which seems improbable just to start with, since the coverage area and
relaying involves very little engineering and could use off-the-shelf
equipment. It would be hard to spend more than a few thousand dollars
at commercial rates and using enterprise hardware to achieve the
project's scope. But HP didn't install the equipment: that was done at
a reduced rate by Vancouver Power Systems. Bandwidth and
authentication services are being donated by local companies. The
equipment is 802.11b, not 802.11g, even. The nature of outdoor Wi-Fi
seems to be profoundly misunderstood by either the reporter, the
officials and others talking about the project, or both: Patrick
Gilbride, the city’s information technology manager and main
liaison to the project...[said] “If this is successful, I think
it will be attractive to look at providing a service that helps local
businesses on a wider scale.” To do so would require a much
larger investment in equipment – or a much stronger signal than
Wi-Fi, whose range is generally limited to a few hundred feet.
Gilbride pointed with enthusiasm to the coming next-generation of
wireless, known as WiMax, which promises an exponentially larger
coverage area than Wi-Fi. “WiMax could be huge, but we’ll
have to wait a year or two before it’s really available,”
Gilbride said. In outdoor, public spaces, Wi-Fi can easily span
several hundred feet unimpeded, and more with a little antenna design
or a small cluster of dumb access points (as little as $50 each) with
sectorized antennas. WiMax might help on the backhaul, but moving 3
Mbps in any direct line of site can be accomplished...

09/25/2004 06:10 AMNIH Proposes Free Access To Research Data
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A64389-2004Sep5.html
The National Institutes of Health has proposed a
major change to its funding policy -- it would mandate that all
scientists who receive grants from the agency make the results of
their research available to the public for free. The policy change
comes in response to a report by the House Appropriations Committee
expressing concern that U.S. taxpayers are not reaping the benefits of
research that they have paid for. The report urges NIH to devise a
system whereby research results would be "freely and continuously
available no later than six months after publication." The proposal
drew swift criticism from the scientific publishing industry, which
argued that if people stop subscribing to their publications because
they can read about these research results for free, the journals will
be unable to perform the costly process of selecting, peer-reviewing
and editing the results into the reliable products now available.
However, NIH Director Elias A. Zerhouni says he's concluded that
publishers' estimates of how much such a system would harm them or
cost the government were "way out of line" with reality. Although
about 60,000 articles are published each year reporting on NIH-funded
research, they constitute only a third of all biomedical journal
articles. "Do you really think people are not going to subscribe to a
journal because they can read 30% of the articles in it for free?"
asks Richard Roberts, a research director at New England Biolabs, who
strongly supports the shift to open access.

National Institutes of Health proposes
full, open, public access to biomedical
research
09/09/2004 12:44 PM
The National
Institutes of Health is recommending that researchers who receive NIH funding make their
work available to the world for no cost six months
after completion:
Under the proposed policy, journal peer-review committees would vet
papers that report results from NIH-sponsored research. Once the
journal has edited and published the articles, editors would upload
them to a searchable Web site and NIH would make them publicly
available within 6 months.
The NIH initially recommended immediate publication, but
added the
six month embargo as a compromise with publishers, who argued that
immediate availability would
undermine their
business model.
