04/12/2005 02:48 PMThe Mozilla Foundation's Firefox browser is without a doubt an open
source software success story. One of its strengths is the active
development community that works to expand and improve the browser's
functionality through the development of Firefox extensions -- small
applications that add functionality to Firefox. Here are a few of my
favorite extensions, all tested with Firefox 1.0.1 on Windows XP and
Mandrakelinux.

Tabbrowser Extensions: couldn't use
Firefox without them
09/17/2004 04:32 PMI was surprised to read posts from David Weinberger and Dan Gillmor
today asking about functionality they wanted from a Firefox extension.
My favorite Firefox extension, Tabbrowser Extensions, does 98%+ of
what they want (sorry David, no back massages). I decided that if tech
gurus like those didn't know about Tabbrowser Extensions, others might
not as well, and it was worth expanding briefly on the comment I left
on David's site. Tabbrowser Extensions allows you to customize how
Firefox works as a tabbed browser. Want clicking on a link to open a
new tab instead of a new window? Or want clicking on a link that takes
you to another site to open a new window, but a link that takes you
elsewhere on the same site to open a new tab? Want a little X on every
tab? With Tabbrowser extensions, you can customize your browsing
experience to have any permutation of tabbed browsing imaginable, and
I have. Tabbrowser Extensions also gives you a little button on the
toolbar that you can click to see a list of all open tabs of that
instance of Firefox, and you can jump to the tab you want. You can
also save the list of tabs, and click on that saved list to bring them
back up. Ever close a tab by mistake? Incredibly usefully, Tabbrowser
Extensions has an Undo Closed Tabs button you can put on your toolbar
that will drop down a list of your most recent closed tabs. Click on
the one you didn't mean to close and it will reload the page. I
wouldn't use FireFox without it. It that makes me a geek, so be it. I
will say that I recently installed it on my mother's computer, and she
loves Tabbrowser Extensions as well. It does mean that when I use
Firefox, I generally have one or two instances of it open, each with
20 or so tabs :-). I am still on FireFox 0.93, waiting for all my
extensions to be updated, and Tabbrowser Extensions works perfectly on
0.93. I don't know what the situation is with 1.0 PR. P.S. One of the
reasons that people may not have heard of Tabbrowser Extensions is
that early in its history, the code overwrote some of the Firefox
code, which made the Firefox developers unhappy with it. Also, for
reasons I don't know, the extension isn't listed...

Two handy FireFox extensions
03/06/2004 02:01 AMJust a quick plug for a couple of FireFox extensions I've been
digging recently. Chris Pederick's Web
Developer toolbar / menu extension combines ideas from a whole
bunch of other extensions and bookmarklets in to one extremely useful
whole. The usual assortment of validation and element outlining
options are present, but the really useful tools are "View Cookie
Information" and "View Response Headers". I've used separate
extensions for these before but it's handy to have them all in one
package.
The second is something which really should be built in to every
browser: Clear
HTTP Auth, which lets you log out of HTTP authenticated sites without having
to close all your browser windows.

Firefox 0.9x has some great new
extensions that make it worth the pain
of upgrading
08/12/2004 04:39 AMI'm a cautious upgrader, always happy to learn from the experiences of
others, and let them take the first arrows. I've been a Firefox user
for over a year now, since it was called Phoenix, and my experience
has been that the Firefox team is aggressive about releasing software
at the same time as they are making deep changes to it. Also, they are
not as solicitous of extension writers and users as I would like, as
I've publicly tangled horns with Ben Goodger about in the past. As a
result, and because I use Firefox as my main browser, I've been
cautious about each upgrade of Firefox, and have been happily chugging
along for months with Firebird 0.7 on the my desktop machine, and
Firefox 0.8 on my laptop. Even the older versions of Firefox/Firebird
are much better and safer browsers than Internet Explorer. Three weeks
ago I finally upgraded to Firefox 0.92, and this week I upgraded to
Firefox 0.93. While I did run into a few snags getting my data over to
the new profiles, it was worth it. Firefox 0.9x is considerably faster
than the earlier versions of Firefox. It feels snappy, like I have to
hurry to keep up with it. And there are some really nice new
extensions that are only available for Firefox 0.9+ that add
significantly more functionality than was possible before. My
favorites include: Slogger, an awesome (although strangely named --
how about SuperSaver?) extension written by Ken Schutte that allows
one to keep a log of the sites that you have visited, and save the
pages as you go along. It is like having Furl built into your browser.
All I need is to do is find a full text indexing and searching program
(more on that later, but suggestions welcome), and I'll be able to get
rid of Surfsaver and MyBase, two formerly useful programs I purchased
whose authors seem to be stuck in "Internet Explorer only"
land. Sage, an improved version of the already good Firefox RSS Reader
Panel. Sage is a very good RSS reader under active development that
runs inside Firefox. It supports custom stylesheets, and Technorati
and Feedster search engine integration. It suits my reading style a
lot better than Nick Bradbury's well-reviewed Feed Demon that I beta
tested, and unlike Feed Demon, it is open source -- anyone can improve
on it. I wonder...

FireFox Extension Creates Stir
FireFox Extension Creates Stir
03/23/2005 05:18 PMA new FireFox extension called Greasemonkey allows users to modify webpages
as they view them. It gives users the capabilities to manipulate DHTML
of a page to prevent ads from appearing, transform links, make a page
more printable, change colors, ad your Amazon ID’s in links,
change the way links open, and much more. There are literally hundreds
of GreaseMonkey userscripts. This all sounds like a great idea, but news.com has some
security concerns.
The trouble with Greasemonkey and user scripts in general is
that scripts can be used for both good and ill, and end users scanning
through lists of enticing scripts might fail to distinguish between
malicious and benign code."A user JavaScript file can in no way harm
your computer or stored data, but badly written files can slow down
Opera, and malicious files can spy on your browsing," read the browser
maker's caveat. "Never install and use a script library from someone
you don't know and trust--if in doubt post in the Opera forums,
newsgroups or mailing lists and ask if the script you would like to
use is well written and exploit-free."
User scripts also could facilitate password-stealing schemes,
said security consultant Richard Smith, who runs the Computer Bytes Man Web site."The bad
guys could likely create a script for stealing usernames and passwords
in login forms using this tool," said Smith. "They would still need to
break into someone's computer to install the script, but the tool
would make the theft process much easier."

"Feed Your Reader" Firefox Feed

"Feed Your Reader" Firefox Feed
Extension
09/20/2004 10:22 AMWhen Firefox add
ed RSS support, I had mixed reactions. On the one hand, I was
excited by the boost RSS would receive by being supported in a popular
browser. But on the other hand, for obvious reasons I wasn't wild
about how Firefox built RSS into the browser without enabling users to
choose an external RSS reader.
So, I was glad when several FeedDemon customers talking about building an extension to enable FeedDemon
to take advantage of the new Firefox RSS features.
Michael Koziarski rose to
the challenge and created F
eed Your Reader, a Firefox extension that enables you to subscribe
to feed in FeedDemon - or any other RSS reader that supports the feed:
// protocol. Which means that even though the extension was
designed with FeedDemon in mind, it's not specific to FeedDemon.
Initial tests show that it also works with NetNewsWire on the
Mac.
Once this extension is installed, you'll see an additional "FYR"
icon in Firefox's status bar right next to the existing RSS icon.
Clicking the FYR icon displays a menu of auto-discovered feeds, and
clicking one of these feeds will display FeedDemon's "New Channel"
wizard to subscribe to it.
Details on Feed Your Reader are h
ere, and the project page is here. If you're viewing
this in Firefox, the download link to the XPI (extension) is here
