Sousveillance On Tour? Or Making A Scene For The Heck Of It?

Sousveillance On Tour? Or Making A Scene
For The Heck Of It?

Sousveillance On Tour? Or Making A Scene
For The Heck Of It?
04/14/2005 01:21 PM

Steve Mann (everyone's favorite cybor g professor) is trying to make a point about "sous veillance" by taking a bunch of folks with cameras (or bags with security camera "domes" attached to them) around shopping malls and pointing out all the various security cameras to be photographed as well. The whole thing comes off as sort of staged and silly. It's not really about making much of a point, other than having a large group of people suddenly show up in a store and taking photos. Of course the poorly trained security guards and store managers are going to get upset. They're not upset about the point that the group is making, but the fact that it's a large group of people being disruptive (and not buying things). Pointing out just how pervasive surveillance has gotten is one thing, but cheap showy spectacles like this don't so much prove a point, as make those trying to prove the point look like a bunch of annoying geeks trying to prove a point to exactly the wrong people. It makes it harder for others to discuss the issue seriously.

When You Don't Know What the Heck You're
Doing ...
11/13/2002 08:58 AM
When You Don't Know What the Heck You're Doing ... Like a lot of technical folk, I frequently find myself doing things where I just plain "don't know what the heck I'm doing". I mean the 1st 10 or 20 times you do anything there are always nuances, details and such that just plain don't make sense. So what I do is always look for someone smarter than me, someone geekier than me -- in that area. So, for example, if I need to: Figure out MySQL replication, it's a quick jaunt over to Jeremy [ PPT ] Deal with *nix system administration, it's a hop, skip and jump over to Apokalyptik Learn about accessibility, run NOT walk over to Mark and then spend a lot of time there. Just outstanding. Get into Java stuff, dash off to Spain and visit Russell (and also envy him being in a warm climate) Figure out anything PHP then it's a cast of many including Simon, Natrak, the Drupal project (reading source is good), Keith, Apokalytik (again) Review the latest in online marketing, power walk over to Inluminent and try hard not to get distracted by the pictures Do Python stuff then I need to see Mark (again) So while this isn't news to anyone I suspect, this blog entry is definitely tribute to those that have helped me. Perhaps these resources will be useful to others. Thanks everyone. And I apologize in advance for anyone I left off. Bear in mind that this was a quick core dump (inspired by getting Pear coding working via looking at the Drupal code base when I hit a snag).

What the heck is: A type 12/02/2003 12:58 AM
Update: I forgot to finish the type inferencing section. D'oh! Fixed. It's a good excuse for a fight, at least in some circles. And papers. Lots and lots of papers. But, more usefully, a type is a notation on some piece of data that marks a promise as to how that data behaves. (If you're looking for sheep, try elsewhere) They may be an indication of the storage that a data needs, the class an object belongs to or inherits from, or the values that data may take.1 Types, when used well, allow you to avoid, or at least reduce...

What the heck is: Finalization 12/19/2004 02:57 PM
Chris Brumme made a blog posting (ages ago--this has been sitting in my pending queue for a while) that reminded me about this, so I thought I'd go into it before I forgot. (I'd recommend reading that link, too--while it deals only with finalization in a .NET environment, and Microsoft's .NET environment specifically (Mono and dotGNU may well have different details) it gives a good overview of some of the more... interesting issues that can be brought up by finalization) Anyway, finalization is the process of letting an object that's now dead have one last shot at cleaning up...

I just saw an engineer take his watch off, untuck a small USB cable, and pass it to another. The second guy plugged the watch into his notebook. I'm a little stunned and puzzled by this. I suddenly feel like I've been living in an electronics junk yard. What are these USB watches? Do they just store data (like a keychain "disk")? Contact lists? Porn? I need to look into this. I also need to get out and around here...

What the heck is: A string 10/28/2003 11:08 PM
And no, it's not nearly as stupid a question as it may seem. This time out, we're going to talk about string data, what it means, how its interpreted, and odds are how much stuff you've never had to think about with it. Strings are remarkably complex things. Remarkably confusing, too, if you're mono-lingual in a language with a simple base writing system. (Like, say, me) A "string", for our purposes, is a series of bits that represents some piece of text in a human language. What you're reading now is text, as is the stuff in your phone book,...

Is This the Library User of the Future?
Heck Yes!
06/03/2004 02:10 AM

I had a few extra minutes tonight, so I started reading the latest Newsweek that showed up in our mailbox. The cover story is Way Cool Phones: Is This the Computer of the Future? [June 7, 2004] I haven't gotten very far into the articles yet, but I'm already loving it. Favorite quotes so far:

"Between our mobile phones, our Blackberrys and Treos and our Wi-Fi'd computers, we're always on and always connected-and soon our cars and appliances will be too. While there's been considerable planning as to how people will use these tools and how they'll pay for them, the wonderful reality is that, as with the Internet, much of the action in the wireless world will ultimately emerge from the imaginative twists and turns that are possible when digital technology trumps the analog mind-set of telecom companies and government regulators." [p.48]

"...[16-year old Adam Rappoport] also spends countless additional hours using his phone's Internet connection to check sports scores, download new ringtones (at a buck apiece) and send short messages to his friends' phones, even in the middle of class. 'I know the touch-tone pad on the phone better than I know a keyboard,' he says. 'I'm a phone guy.'

In Toyko, halfway around the world, Satoshi Koiso also closely eyes his mobile phone. Koiso, a college junior, lives in the global capital of fancy new gadgets--20 percent of all phones in Tokyo link to the fastest mobile networks in the world. Tokyoites use their phones to watch TV, read books and magazines and play games. But Koiso also depends on his phone for something simpler and more profound: an antismoking message that pops up on his small screen each morning as part of a program to help students kick cigarettes. 'Teachers struggle to stop smoking, too. You hang in there,' the e-mail says one day....

Sales of mobile phones dwarf the sales of televisions, stereos, even the hallowed personal computer. There are 1.5 billion cell phones in the world today, more than three times the number of PCs....

...'One day, 2 or 3 billion people will have cell phones, and they are all not going to have PCs,' says Jeff Hawkins, inventors of the Palm Pilot and the chief technology officer of PalmOne. 'The mobile phone will become their digital life.' " [pp. 51-52]

There's also an interesting World Without Wires foldout that shows various technology scenarios in everyday life, somewhat like the Vodafone Future Site.

I'll post more excerpts as I finish reading this issue, but if you're trying to convince your administration why you need to install wireless and start discussing "shifting" your content, this is a good, mainstream starting point.

power tower

« A full moon hangs over the power tower in Töölö. I've always thought this building has a striking visual effect since the signs are all the same colour, which is unusual, but they converge on adjacent sides of the building. Maybe it's only because I usually see the building when I'm drunk and snarfing food from the Jaskan Grilli across the street. »

Otava kept us up most of the night as his itchy-scratchy condition reached critical mass. The HU Vet Clinic couldn't give him an appointment for two weeks so we had to find someone who would see him ASAP. I spent my afternoon at the vet and dragging my ass to the pet store for a new giant bag of food and to the pharmacy for some medications. First we try a medicated shampoo and topical pesticide in case it is caused by microscopic mites, otherwise we will have to start hunting down the allergen which could be a long, tedious process. But, for now, he's sleeping comfortably without itching and whining which is a major improvement for us all.

While I was waiting in the pharmacy, I was looking at the cute doggie lunchbox that the pet shop gave to me for buying the giant bag of food which opens into two bowls with a water bottle and a food compartment when some nice old guy sat down next to me and started chatting me up about how a metal one would be better and such. I was so tired that I just smiled and nodded since I don't think I could have made conversation even in English. The pharmacy downtown is straight out of a scene from the movie Brazil with the cascades of pneumatic tubes that transport fresh drugs from the basement up to the awaiting customers.

Sean Burke made my evening last night when he pointed out one of the best reads I've had in a while: Dab blers and Blowhards. Even if you're not a geek or one of the incestuous digerati who will find this cutting a little too close to the bone if they read carefully it's a fun read. I remember distinctly when my bullshit-o-meter pegged on 11 when Tim O'Reilly and bunch of others as OSCON one year were starting to go on about how programmers were really artists and could be funded by patrons of the art of programming, etc. I imagine we were drunk, possibly stoned, and still it seemed like an incredibly pretentious way to put a good face on dot.bomb unemployment. The downside of the essay is that we are reminded of ESR's treatise on oral sex for geeks at the end. Hurrr.

Remembering the BBS Scene

Remembering the BBS Scene 04/02/2005 04:07 PM
Ah, those were the days. As now, it was a healthy mix of academics, techies, conspiracy theorists and trolls. Jason Scott has a great website chock full of old BBS textfiles, with no advertising. What does his collection include? Well, it's a lot like K5 if you ask me, but maybe a little more naive. There are some ugly things down in these archives; there are narcissistic ravings from pre-adolescent social misfits. There are calls for anarchy. There's satanism, there's racism, there's all the -isms in the book lurking in the words. But there's hope, too. There's excitement, there's joy, there's every manner of feeling being crammed down into ASCII and posted for the world to find. It's a spectrum of humanity, and this is what I hope you'll find, buried there, among the text. Enjoy. Jason Scott Proprietor, TEXTFILES.COM

Art scene and heard

Art scene and heard 07/07/2004 11:11 AM
Located in an historical Long Island elementary school building, P.S.1. Contemporary Art Center has been a hub of avant-garde art and culture for nearly three decades. Now, P.S.1. also has an Internet radio station. As you might expect, WPS1 features an eclectic mix of programming. No Clear Channel station is going to give you the voice of Marcel Duchamp, the techno of Todd Sines, and a discussion with Taipei City mayor Ma Yingjiu about public art. From this week's schedule:
11:30 am The Bio-Blurb Show, Edition #3: Bio-Art or Bio-Terror? - In this most provocative program, host Suzanne Anker speaks with former Whitney Museum director David Ross, art journalist Stephen Henry Madoff, and filmmaker Virgil Wong about the federal government's Patriot-Act case against the activist artist Ste ve Kurtz and the Critical Art Ensemble and the criminalization of the American artist in general. Must-hear listening!

12:00 noon Love Crazy, Edition #4 - Whazzup workaholics! For this session of her music series for WPS1, chanteuse Nora York zeroes in on how much we love our labors, especially when they're lost to song.

1:00 pm Curbside Cassette, Edition #3 - Okay, work's covered. How about school? Recent high-school grads Joe Ahearn and Max Kagan celebrate their diplomas with a science-and-math music mix. Indeed, where would we be without "Calculus Man"? Without the Beastie Boys, for one thing, joined here by Mos Def, Sun Ra, Elvis Costello, the Pixies, White Stripes and more.

The Italian squat scene

The Italian squat scene 03/14/2005 05:53 PM
Bugs
Yesterday, I had a meeting with some of the Italian Indymedia community at a squat. In most countries squatters are considered criminals and local law has very little tolerance for them. In Italy, the squat scene is the center of a lot of the sub-culture and alternative media. After years of resistance, many of the squats on property which was owned by the local government have been officially recognized by the municipalities in various degrees. The squats have events including debates and parties. They have kitchens, living quarters, and in the case of the squat I went to last night, a computer lab (called "hacks" this one named "bugs") that teaches people how to switch from Microsoft to Linux and allows free Internet access to anyone who wants to drop by.

After the chat in the bugs hack, we went to dinner at a centro sociale called Casale Podere Rosa. It was similar to a squat except the people don't live there. The place we went to was on the upscale end. The food was excellent and they had lots of posters and pamphlets describing the organic farming methods they used to grow their produce.

Internet penetration in Italy is quite low and the Berlusconi media machine controls most of what people see. On the other hand, the left wing are fighting hand and fist (literally) with the right wing radicals. Free speech was something that people were fighting for, in many cases outside of the law. At a tactical level, my discussion about freedom of expression and our "Infrastructure of Democracy" idea of fighting bad speech with more good speech sounded a bit idealistic. What was interesting to me was the power and the energy of the alternative media movement. It reminds me of my theory on good alternative music. When there is a huge force pressing down on freedoms, sub-cultures with more creativity and power are likely to form.

Harold is missing the scene! 02/10/2004 02:47 AM
It's party time!!.

It's party time!!

It's actually funny that us East Coast guys never get invited to any of these West Coast social events (not that we would go - but an invitation once in awhile would just be nice).  We're not even a smart enough group to throw our own events.  Events like these makes an East Coast guy wish sometimes he lived on the West Coast.  Anyway...

If I was at the Laszlo Systems party, sipping their wine and eating their cheese, I'd be talking up the new Audioblogging player I been hinting and talking about lately and trying to get built "maybe" using Laszlo.  My agenda would be to find someone from Laszlo willing to host the Laszlo SAM radio player, similiar to what they are doing with SoundBlox.  As the wine really begins to flow, maybe Marc can drop this permalink or some hints to some player there.  After all, isn't that what they are after with the party, branding and finding new opportunities for their product.  I really need a West Coast agent!!

It's official - Party Tues night at Etech.

Laszlo Systems will be sponsoring a party at O'Reilly's Emerging technology Conference Tuesday night at the Emer3g1ng L0ft scene.

It'll start up at 10 PM - after the day's sessions are over.  Music, beer, booze and great conversation.

The next night - will also be a party there - as well.

This year's Etech is looking to be quite a scene - what with the Emergent Democracy day long pre-sessions, etc.

[Marc's Voice]

[Audio/Mobile Blogging News]

YUP - Harold you're gonna have ot move out here.  That reminds of teh time we got our VC funding (at MacroMind.) Part of the deal was that we had to be right off of 101 or 280 (the two major arteries out here.)  We choose SOMA (South of Market) and we became the first software company down there.

The rest if history.

And now the ashes are rising from the Phoenix. Orkut is throwing a big party tonight.

But we ARE part of a global virtual world now. It's not like Joi is throwing parties in Chiba.  No he's in Helsinki, NYC, Davos, out here and all sorts of secret hiding places.

BTW The party location has been changed.  Stay tuned for details.
