Senator Tries to Block GMail

Senator Tries to Block GMail 04/23/2004 09:33 AM

Legislator seeks to block Gmail: I don't agree with the senator's logic here. Like I've said before, GMail is essentially a big bribe. In exchange for 1GB of storage, you give up some privacy. So long as people understand that going in, where's the harm? You won't catch me doing it, but other people are willing to live with the creepiness for that much space. I say good for them.

Blasting Gmail as a horrific intrusion into Internet users' privacy, a California state senator has introduced legislation to block Google's free e-mail service.

State Sen. Liz Figueroa, a Democrat from the Bay Area city of Fremont, said Thursday that it should be illegal for a company to scan the text of its customers' e-mail correspondence and display relevant advertising--even if customers explicitly agree to the practice in exchange for a gigabyte of storage.

California State Senator Wants To Block
Gmail?
04/12/2004 07:33 PM
Okay, I have to admit that I don't really understand the uproar over Google's Gmail offering. The press has had a field day with all the negative attention that Gmail has been getting, and now a California state senator is even drafting legislation to ban Gmail. Why? Because "we think it's an absolute invasion of privacy. It's like having a massive billboard in the middle of your home." Hmm. No, it's not like that at all. It would be like that if a company gave me something of value in exchange for the ability to put a billboard in my house and I agreed to the deal - which seems like a perfectly reasonable transaction between two consenting parties. No one is being forced to use Gmail. If they don't like the fact that Google will put ads in the email client, they're free to not use it. In the meantime, there seem to be plenty of people who want to sign up for the service. Personally, I'll admit that I was invited into the beta and have been messing around with it. I'm pretty concerned about my privacy, but don't see anything wrong with what I've signed up for - and everyone who I've emailed to test the system out has asked me how they can get a Gmail account of their own.

Futurismic's new fiction from a Campbell
nominee
08/01/2004 05:01 AM
Futurismic is a group blog run by a bunch of great sf writers, who've raised a modest sum of money that they use to pay for science fiction stories which they publish on their site. They've just put up a new one, "Benno On Hollywood," written by one of this year's Campbell Award and Hugo Award finalists, Jay Lake.
He’s not a bad guy, our Benno, out cruising for chicks on Sepulveda or trying to score some vaca blanca on Hollywood. He’s local color for the tourists who still come, even now, with his shaved head and the Santeria tattoos his Auntie Bone put down his scalp and neck and on across his back and arms. The skulls and goats and twisty barbed wire can all be seen through the grubby wife beater with the tiny manga girl hand-drawn on the front. Three Lincoln pennies dangle from one ear, each on its own wire hoop — stabbed in by hand, no spray-on painkiller shit. Other ear’s got a vintage plastic cattle tag from the late twen-cen meat industry.
