Taiwanese Makers Open Up 16x DVD Burners
08/21/2004 10:43 AMASUSTeK Computer, the world’s largest maker of mainboards, and
Pioneer, one of the world’s biggest producers of electronic equipment,
recently began to ship their new DVD burners that are capable of
recording DVDs at 16x speed, broadening the offerings of high-speed
disc recorders on the market.
The latest DVD burner from ASUS, DRW-1604P, is capable of recording
DVD±R discs at 16x, DVD±RW discs at 4x, DVD+R DL (Dual Layer) at 4x,
CD-R discs at 32x, CD-RW discs at 24x and also read DVD-ROM and CD-ROM
discs at 16x and 40x speeds respectively. The optical disc drive is
equipped with technologies aimed to avoid buffer underrun and other
errors while writing. Pioneer’s DVR-A08XLA recorder boasts the same
specification, as ASUSTeK is an OEM supplier for Pioneer.
Earlier this year when Philips Electronics initiated production of its
DVD recorders capable of burning DVD discs at 16x speed some Japanese
and Taiwanese companies, such as Pioneer, Sony, BenQ, Lite-On and
ASUSTeK said they would postpone the volume production of 16x DVD
burners at least till the end of July citing inadequate supply of
appropriate laser diodes because of insufficient yields as well as
necessity to match 16x DVD burners with 16x DVD+R discs.

AMD Teams with IBM on Next-Gen Chips
03/20/2003 01:05 PMAMD has inked a pact with IBM to jointly develop next-generation

use less power. Though work is scheduled to begin by the end of
January, the companies said their first 65-nanometer chips likely will
not become commercially available until at least 2005.
Airespace Teams with IBM
Airespace Teams with IBM
09/17/2004 12:24 PMAirespace, the wireless LAN switch maker, formed a partnership with
IBM: The deal will open the door for Airespace to market its products
to IBM customers. Among startup WLAN switch vendors, Airespace has
scored some notable deals. It has OEM agreements with Alcatel, Nortel,
NEC, and a co-development deal with D-Link. Some other switch makers
have also scored big-name deals as well. Trapeze recently announced
that it formed an OEM deal with 3Com that is expected to blossom into
a co-development relationship. Observers have been expecting a
shake-out in the WLAN switch market essentially since the segment was
born because it appears that there are too many startups for the
market to support. Partnerships with big-name vendors certainly adds
credibility to the startups which can in turn help them raise
financing and potentially stay in business....

past five years is really something. Great ball movement, fakes,
no-look passes -- it's a pleasure to watch.
