A couple of days ago my
sister cc'd me on
the
ACLU
Pizza movie -- a digital identity nightmare done as a Flash
animation. "Very interesting," she wrote to her friends, "and probably
not too far from the truth." I'd seen this movie a while back, so I
pondered for a moment about the ongoing effect it might be having and
then moved on. Then today it came back to me, via
Phil Windley, via
Kim
Cameron, via
Future
Salon. I wondered how this particular meme has been flowing
through the collective mind. So I took a picture of that:

Free pizza, or at least the hope of free
pizza
03/14/2005 04:38 PMCollege kids these days have lots of things we didn’t have when
I was in college—computers, the web, iPods, massive credit card
debt—but we had one thing they don’t: if pizza
wasn’t delivered in 30 minutes or less, it was
free.
On any weekend night—okay, any night really since I attended a
liberal arts college and I tended to hang out with people who
weren’t exactly model students (I don’t think there were
any, actually)—we’d have a small quantity of money to
spend on beer and pizza. If the pizza was free, that meant more money
for beer.
The amount of beer you could get for the price of a pizza was
significant.
It was still the Cold War then, with the possibility of nuclear war
and all that. But it was not a time without hope: there was always the
hope of free pizza.
Of course, eventually they figured out that pizza delivery drivers
were getting into accidents too often, so they got rid of the free
pizza policy.
To this day I’m still a little let down whenever I order pizza
and they tell me it will be there in “about 45 minutes” or
whatever. Oh, man, where’s the fun in “about 45
minutes.” And what if it comes in 50 minutes? Nothing
special.

On the other hand, these days I eat Pagliacci’s instead of
Domino’s. Seattle-ites, you know what I’m saying.

A Passion for Pizza
A Passion for Pizza
07/05/2004 11:02 AMI have decided that pizza is the perfect food, loved the world over.
Done correctly, it includes most of the food groups according to
Apache Pizza; cheese, meat, veggies and bread. Someone once said of
pizza, "Pizza is a lot like sex. When it's good, it's really good.
When it's bad, it's still pretty good." Being USian , I'm without
time to create my own dough, squash my own tomatoes, or kill my own
cow to create a truly mad pizza. There are alternatives in the quest
for the pizza of world domination, though.

is your answer:
Pizza Party is a free text based software package for ordering
pizza, or for throwing pizza parties.
Pizza Party has many features to make ordering pizza easy:
* Can order pizza with only a few keystrokes.
* Can save pizza preferences.
* Can use batch files for ordering many pizzas.
* Has easy to use flags for ordering different toppings.
* Runs on most UNIX-like operating systems.
* Supports most currently popular topings like "mushrooms", and
"pepperoni"!
* Unattended / background operation.
* Pizza Party is distributed under the GNU General Public
License.
Since it's released under the GPL, does that mean I have to share
my pizza too?

ACLU solicits feedback on airport
"pat-down" searches
12/26/2004 06:32 PM
Xeni Jardin:
Snipped from Declan's
politech list --
ACLU Technology and Liberty Project Director
Barry Steinhardt says,
A September 2004 TSA directive granting airport security screeners
broad leeway to conduct "pat-down" searches has led to numerous
reports of sexual harassment and abuse.
Victims -- particularly women-- are reporting that they are not being
offered private searches or searches by screeners of the same sex, and
that "private" searches are being conducted behind screens that
provide no privacy. Passengers are reporting rough, rude, and
humiliating manhandling and groping of their breasts and crotch areas,
demeaning sexual comments, and being forced to remove business jackets
in full view of crowds, despite the fact that it is a widespread
convention in our society for women to wear only bras or other
undergarments underneath such jackets.
The ACLU is assessing possible responses to this policy. In doing so,
it is extremely helpful for us to gain a sense of the kinds of abuses
that are taking place. If list members have experienced a problem with
pat-down searches at airport security, they can help us end this
problem by reporting their story here. For
more information on the abuses, Politiech readers might want to look
here,
where we have collected many of the news stories.

ACLU seeks Sanchez perjury investigation. As a followup to
yesterday's post, the
ACLU has
sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General Gonzales, requesting an
investigation of Gen. Ricardo Sanchez for perjury before Congress.
Sanchez is accused of lying about approving guidelines for the use of
abusive interrogation techniques at Abu Ghraib prison.
Now, many of you might think that Gonzales might refuse this request
and be done with it. However, the ACLU has the right to request a
writ of mandamus,
which would compel Gonzales to initiate an investigation.
If Sanchez is investigated, will he be pressured to reveal the
identity of those in the Pentagon / Bush administration (Rumsfeld,
Wolfowitz, Feith, Cheney,
Cambone?!)
who knew about and possibly ordered these policies?

been subjected to a Kafka-esque security system when trying to fly.
Read the documents on the ACLU's site and you'll see that the system
is sloppy and unfair, and probably counter-productive in stopping
actual terrorists when it wastes such time on entirely innocent people
who get on these watchlists and can't get off.
