Cory Doctorow: The Matrix Online (a massively multiplayer online game based on the Matrix franchise) has hired a troupe of 20 actors to hang around in game and in character, advancing the story and generally making it all seem more disbelief-suspendingly real.

Since the close of the beta, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announced that it has employed a troupe of 20-odd people whose job it will be to enact narrative scenarios in The Matrix Online live. These people will assume the roles of popular characters, interact with players, and generally move the stories in ways that only live "actors" can. And though it appears that the story hasn't officially commenced, a few players on the Method server were treated to a pretty slick sample of it this afternoon: an extended pep-talk by none other than Morpheus himself. (See the screenshots for proof.) But this is an Out of the Box report, so here are our first impressions of the game so far.

It's pretty common in many (though certainly not all) sports for players to go an extra step or two to push an opposing team when they're down. Maybe hit an opponent a little extra hard or try to add an extra shove when a ref isn't looking. It seems that some dirty tricks come naturally in many sports - but not in video games until now. There's a new video game controller out there that will let you momentar ily take control of your opponents controller. Sometimes it gives you full control, and others it just messes up their controller altogether. Consider it the video game version of an extra shove.

I see announcements both chez P@ and from Tucu about Rome, which, by its description sounds like the equivalent of Mark Pilgrim’s pythonoid Universal Feed Parser for those in Java-land. A lot younger of course and I bet they’ll have some fun dealing with the variegated realities of RSS As She Are Spoke out there in the big bad Internet, but these are smart guys so I’m optimistic.

UPDATE: Just arrived in Rome. I had asked for a hotel with Internet. I realized when I arrived at the Hotel Hassler that I had stayed here once before with my mother and sister around 20 years or so ago. I remember it being an excellent hotel. However, I remember that they didn't take credit cards back then. Now they have Internet. I remember this was my late mother's favorite hotel in Rome...
