Linux kernel development process thwarts
subversion attempt
11/06/2003 12:18 PM
In a stunning verification of Eric S. Raymond's open source adage, "Many eyes make all bugs shallow," an attempt to place malicious "backdoor" code in the Linux kernel 2.6 development tree was detected and rejected almost immediately. The code, if it had become part of the final kernel release, would have allowed a remote user to take control of machines running that Linux kernel version. Unauthorized code snippets, often called Easter Eggs, are common in closed-source programs but are relatively rare in the open source world. It's easy for developers to hide either humorous or malicious code in programs whose inner workings are hidden, but as this Linux kernel incident shows, the open source development process carries a degree of built-in immunity to this kind of problem.

IBM Adopts Open Development Internally: "Following on the success of its Eclipse open-source development platform, IBM has quietly been using a form of open-source development internally to create technology the company will sell commercially.

IBM calls its model Community Source, which it defines as a collaborative, internal, open-source-style environment for developing and testing new technology.

Danny Sabbah, vice president of strategy and technology for the IBM Software Group, in Armonk, N.Y., said IBM is using its Community Source model across 100 projects and 2,000 developers in the company. These projects span the IBM Software Group, Systems Group, Research and Global Services, he said."

Very interesting. I'd like to learn more about that. What parts of the so called open source development process have they built into the Community Source model? I've found that most developers have different definitions of the open source development process (via Ross Gardler).

Scientists, Not Politicians, Should Set
Boundaries for Biodefense Research
07/01/2004 03:29 AM
The Science Advisory Board polled almost 1,000 individuals about who should set guidelines for the types of biodefense research projects that are considered legitimate. The majority of respondents, 72%, claimed that scientists are best qualified to establish research guidelines when dealing with potential bioterrorism agents. Interestingly, ethicists were selected over politicians by three to one as the next best-qualified professionals to help determine a biodefense research agenda. [PRWEB Jul 1, 2004]

Study Finds Ample Opportunities for Life
Science Suppliers in the Biodefense
Market
07/28/2004 02:47 AM
Biodefense research is one of the fastest growing markets for suppliers of life science products and instrumentation. Government spending on biodefense research is likely to continue to increase at a rate exceeding investment in other areas of biological research and development, and is attracting both scientists and the companies who support them. President Bush’s authorization of the Project BioShield Act last week is but one of many government initiatives to improve the country’s defenses against bioterrorism. Since the ability to effectively combat bioterrorism largely depends on the information generated by biomedical research on disease-causing microorganisms and the immune system’s response to them, nearly $1.6 billion is allocated in 2004 to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This budget will help support basic research on potential agents of bioterrorism such as anthrax or smallpox as well as the development of vaccines, diagnostic tests and therapies to detect and counter the effects of a bioterrorist attack. Due Process, or No Process: Rule of Law

04/20/2004 09:57 AM
Our government insists that it can kidnap a foreign national overseas and hold him forever in a Guantanamo jail, or put him through a military trial and even execute him. Oh, the government has made a few cosmetic concessions to law in its plans for military tribunals. But note that these are unilateral changes and can be withdrawn at any time. Our government also insists that U.S. citizens can be declared enemy combatants and tossed into jail forever, or tried by military tribunals (and maybe executed), without access to a lawyer or the courts. If the court endorses this, it's endorsing despotism.
