I was thrilled to meet a young man by the name of Zack Rosen at SXSW this year, and more thrilled
when he told me that his reading of Smart Mobs was a key inspiration
behind his effort to create the infrastructure for Deanspace. He's been working on a
toolkit for community organizing of the kind that drove the Dean
campaign. Based on Drupal, the
civic organizing toolkit was designed to be easy to use and cost less
than $50/month. It's called CivicSpace. Check it out. It
should be available soon.
CivicSpace is being built with the needs of
distributed organizations in mind. It will give you and the supporters
within your community a solid framework for organizing and engaging
those around you in action. But it also will allow you to plug your
community into a network of other communities where you can share your
ideas, knowledge, relationships, and organizational information. Here
are some things it will enable you to do:
- Create a customizable community driven website with Blogs, Photo
Galleries, User Profiles, Friend / Buddy Tracking, Polls, and File
Storage more…
- Send targeted email more…
- Import and aggregate remote content, share users, and sync
calendars with any other CivicSpace site more…

iTunes for Windows and the iTunes Music Store are a hit with students
at Stanford University. Lawsuits from the RIAA against file-swappers
have become a concern for some students, and the ability to legally

big contributor to the user base of the software. “Once you get the
program, you can access the MP3 music library of anyone on the local

Does Digital Music Need Artwork?
Does Digital Music Need Artwork?
11/06/2003 05:21 AM
Digital music may be great for distributing songs, but some are upset about losing out on album cover art. Of
course, plenty of cover art is available online, and some of the new
download stores include the ability to offer cover art and
information. However, not everyone does this or feels comfortable
with it. There's one interesting suggestion in the article: a band's
website is the new cover art. The problem with that, however,
is that there's no historic record of what their website looks like
with each release. With a band, many people form some association
between the cover art of an album and the music on that album. That's
much more difficult with a website that no longer exists. It is true
that (at least for me) album cover art is closely associated with the
music. I've found that to be especially true when I've ended up with
used or pre-release CDs that don't contain the cover art. When I
later see the actual cover art it often is a bit jarring, because it
doesn't necessarily fit with how I've been experiencing the music. I
recently ordered a CD online from a musician (directly from his
website) who I've been a fan of for over a decade. There were some
problems with the order, and eventually the musician just burnt me a
copy of the CD and included a second CD with new stuff he was
working on (along with a hand written note listing the songs and
apologizing for the order taking "bloody forever"). In both cases,
since the CDs have no artwork I've been having a little bit of trouble
"picturing" the album in my head. I'd never realized that this
happens, but it seems that I very closely associate the cover art with
the music itself.
