Chinese Anti-Japan Protests
Chinese Anti-Japan Protests
04/19/2005 03:56 AM
There is a good blog post
by Andrea about bloggers in China talking about the anti-Japan
protests.
As a Japanese who has a great deal of sympathy and empathy for
China, what I find difficult is trying to understand the various
threads and how Japanese people can try to make a difference. In
particular, the hateful and extreme actions of some of the Chinese
make it difficult, if not scary to even try to open a dialog. At the
same time, the extremes in China are fueling the nationalists in Japan
and not helping the cause for the more moderate voices. I believe hate
will never help communications.
One of the biggest problems is that most Japanese don't understand
the issues. Another point is that most Japanese are not great
supporters of the military. When I think about the military in Japan,
I don't think dirty nationalist thoughts. Rather, I think about May 15, 1932
when Prime Minister Inukai was
assassinated by the military which ended party-based politics in Japan
until after WWII. I think about the Japanese military taking over the
government and sending Japan into one of the worst periods in its
history. I think about the small children being sent off to war as
Kamikaze or human torpedos and I think about the letters homes from
them that are enshrined in Yasukuni Shrine. There are letters from
terrified little boys writing about how scared they are about going to
war. Most Japanese do not trust the military and most Japanese believe
that the military run government of the 30's was an illegitimate
government as a result of a coup. Many Japanese believe that the
Japanese people were victims of the military.
Having said that, I do think that the text books and teaching in
Japan underplays the actions of the military in China and I believe
the Japanese text books are a real problem that should be addressed. I
really think that the Japanese don't understand how victimized the
Chinese and Koreans were and I believe this education needs to occur.
I would point out that it is not just this aspect of Japanese
textbooks that is broken. Japanese text don't use the word
"revolution" or "civil war". It was the "Meiji Restoration", "The
American fight for independence", the US Civil War is the "North South
War" etc. There was a move to simplify Pi to just 3. In other words,
the Japanese ministry of education needs an overhaul. Maybe they
should use Wikipedia instead.
I'm not trying to trivialize the issues that are being protested by
the Chinese, but if they are trying to cause change in Japan, maybe
some of them can try to talk to their allies in Japan like me instead
of trying to force or scare into submission their enemy. A reasonable
bridge building effort between activists and experts on both sides to
try to address the issues through tactical maneuvers might be
useful.
Or am I missing the point completely?

Large Scale Robotic Aquaculture
04/28/2004 01:21 PMCharles C. Mann has written a
new Wired
article that offers an intriguing overview of the latest research
into automated, open ocean aquaculture. Robot caretakers would manage
giant, floating fish farms that would drift between continents. This
approach could eliminate problems of previous attempts at large-scale
aquaculture which relied on fixed pens near the shoreline which
produced
huge amounts of pollution, lowered the values of shorefront real
estate, and frequently failed due to overcrowding of the fish. For
more
information on this new project, visit the University of New Hampshire

Large Hack Attack Over the Weekend
03/17/2005 03:08 AMInternet Week says that the
Internet Storm Center tracked a large-scaled attack over the weekend.
It attacked hosting servers and turned them into distributors of the
malicious code.
"It seems that the attack used both direct and indirect means to
infect users, said the ISC. In some cases, a script was appended to
all home pages of the sites hosted on the compromised servers; the
script redirected visitors of those pages to a malicious site (which
was offline as of mid-morning Monday), which actually distributed the
malicious code.
But ICS also found some evidence that a DNS cache poisoning attack was
part of the program. "We are not quite sure yet how this is being
done, as the files that we've received so far do not seem to contain
DNS/DHCP poisoning code."

Applied Decentralization: A large-scale
social system for HLS
Applied Decentralization: A large-scale
social system for HLS
03/06/2004 02:08 AMIt's been a few months since I've posted - a very busy and exciting
time here at Groove. Both in terms of what's been happening in the
business and market, but also because we're closing in on the first
beta of Groove V3. I can't wait to tell you about the improvements in
V3 ... because after having used it day in and day out for a few
months now, I've simply never felt nearly this excited about a
product that I've worked on. And that says a lot. More on V3 in a few
weeks!
For those of you who have been following Groove for quite some
time, you may recall that the product's original raison d'être
was to enable people "at the edge" to dynamically assemble online into
secure virtual workspaces, to work together and to get something done,
even if those individuals were in different organizations with
completely different IT infrastructure.
Today, with the gracious permission of one of our most significant
customers, Groove made an announcement that I'd like to talk about for
a moment. It's very significant to me for two reasons: First, the
nature of how Groove is being used in this solution demonstrates to
the extreme the very reason why Groove was built the way it was,
from a technology and architecture perspective. Decentralization at
its finest. The customer's core challenge was to enable individuals
from many, many different organizations - most of whom had little or
no opportunity for training - to rapidly assemble into small virtual
teams to selectively share information, make decisions, get the job
done, and disassemble. The individuals are geographically dispersed.
They use different kinds of networks, behind different organizations'
firewalls and management policies. They are very, very highly mobile.
And there are few applications where the requirement for deep and
effective security is more self-evident.
Groove's press release can be found her
e.
The Department of Homeland Security's press releases related to
HSIN can be found here and
here,
while Secretary Ridge's remarks are here.
Why was a decentralized architecture for this network so
fundamentally important, and thus why was Groove uniquely suited for
the task? This brings me to the second reason that I'm tremendously
pleased to have had the opportunity to contribute to solving this
problem. Larry Lessig taught us that
in software-based systems in cyberspace, the code can
define outcomes - inadvertently or intentionally - that might have an
impact on society. Or better stated in this case, the system's core
architectural design principles have a real impact not only on the
system's mission effectiveness, but also in how it might effectively
preserve and protect rights.
To understand these issues more deeply, one need look no
further than the eloquent work released this past December by the Markle Foundation Task Force on
National Security in the Information Age, called "Creating
a Trusted Network for Homeland Security".
If you're interested in the "why" of decentralization, read the
report. Look at the members of the task force. And take particular
note of their proposed SHARE network and its architecture.
(Interestingly, Richard Eckel wrote about it in his blog before he
became aware of the details of Groove's involvement with HSIN.)
Lots of stuff here to read, but it's truly fascinating if you are
interested in understanding how decentralization and peer-to-peer
technology is having a real impact on government and society.
Although so, so many people are involved in this project because of
its scope, in particular I'd like to recognize Col. Tom Marenic, Pat
Duecy, Ed Manavian, and especially our partner Mike Kushin of
ManTech/IDS. My sincere thanks for your leadership, your passion about
the mission, and your appreciation for organizational dynamics, social
dynamics, technology and architecture in assembling a large and
empirically effective system for purposeful social interaction.

Network Coding for Large Scale Content Distribution. The
related work section is a great survey of swarming protocol research.
The protocol presented in the paper is interesting, although I think
the simulations use infinitely fast processors and disks; only the
last two paragraphs address the considerable implementation issues.
It's possible that these issues could eliminate the 20-30% performance
advantage over BitTorrent.

Anti-Japan protests in China
Anti-Japan protests in China
04/16/2005 08:44 PM
Reports of recent
Anti-Japanese demonstrations in China lack any details about
the content in the disputed history text books. Is it related to the
Nanjing Massacre, which
Iris Chang wrote about in her much contested book
"
The Rape of Nanking"?
The Chinese government is certainly not acting as a shining example of
upholding
human rights by any
means, but does that deprive its people from the right to have part of
their history at least adequately remembered ?
And is the Chinese Government using this collective wound to further
its own
national interests such as keeping
Japan from
joining the UNSC?
