Roller planning done, now I'm heading
home...
04/13/2005 10:40 PM

I've had a very productive week so far in MPK and I'm heading home early tomorrow. Working with new blogs.sun.com developer Allen Gilliland, I wrapped up first drafts of requirements and design for group blogging in Roller (check the wiki if you want the details). Allen and I also spent a lot of time discussing possible "supportablity" enhancements like configuration consolidation and load balancing. I posted some notes from these discussions to the Roller dev list for feedback. The posts spurred a flurry of comments and discussion that touched on topics of search (Matt R and Matt S want to fix it) and ditching container managed authentication (Matt R is interested in moving to Acegi).

I haven't been nearly so productive on the book. Before I left N.C. I picked up the same cold that hit rest of my family, so I've been sleeping instead of writing. So it goes.

Nice thing is, I was able to spend a little time with some of my other co-workers. Roller committer Anil Gangolli (more of a friend than a co-worker I guess) kindly invited me over for dinner with his wife and some friends on Sunday and we had some great indian food and conversation (Thanks Anil!). And today, I was fortunate enough to run into Tim Bray and Claire Giordano as I was wandering around looking for an empty table in the Sun cafeteria.

I'm coming back out here on the 26th for the chairman's award deal. Hopefully I'll feel better then.

Heading Home Soon

Heading Home Soon 12/19/2003 11:56 AM
In a few days I'll begin what's become an annual ritual since I moved to California almost exactly 4 years ago: going home for the holidays. Just writing this now, I'm wondering if the day will ever come that I don't consider Toledo, Ohio to be "home" instead of where I'm currently living. Do I have to spend more time away than the 25ish years that I lived there? Or maybe I just need to "settle down and get married"?...

An article in the New Zealand press adds some perspective to the slow reconstruction of Iraq, which U.S. senators are calling pitiful, embarrassing and dangerous. A Kiwi contingent of military engineers is heading home after being hunkered down in Basra for the last five weeks unable to do their work restoring water treatment plants and fixing infrastructure such as schools, police stations and bridges as violence escalated throughout Iraq.

Roller 1.2-dev

Roller 1.2-dev 06/05/2005 11:32 PM

This site is now running Roller 1.2-dev (the latest from Roller's CVS HEAD), which includes Allen's cool new configuration system, Anil's new configurable ping feature and Anil's new topic tags plugin which makes it easy to add Technorati tags to any post, for example:

Tags:

Update: I'm not sure why Technorati is not picking up my tag. The tag looks to be properly formatted and I have "pinged" Technorati several times now (included a couple of manual pings).

Finally! Roller 1.0 is available. There will be a slightly more formal announcement on the Roller blog a little later.

What happens after Roller 1.0?

What happens after Roller 1.0? 01/07/2005 12:07 AM

Now that we're getting down to the last couple of bugs, it's time to think about what comes after Roller 1.0. I've been reviewing the bug database and making sure all the things folks have been asking for are in there as bugs, new features, or improvements. I've put together a list of the new feature areas that I personally think are most interesting with links into our JIRA issue tracker.

I'm posting this to get feedback from anybody and everybody willing to give it, but this is not a democratic process. My manager will ultimately determine what I work on (since the book eats all of my so called free time) and the other Roller developers will decide what they each want to work on. But we'd all like to hear what you, the Roller users and fans and victims (like Charles at Javablogs.com) have to say. You can respond here, on your blogs, in the issue tracking system (as votes or comments), or on the Roller mailing lists.

Group blogging

Group blogging is a long requested feature. We've always known that eventually, each user would have more than one blog and each blog could have more than one user ( ROL-598). We've also discussed the idea of a simple workflow, where only designated "editors" in a group blog can post and regular authors can only save drafts ( ROL-599).

Better front page / community area

Better front page and community features are also much requested. We need better ways to explore the blogs on a Roller server, better reports, and some way to browse users. Right now, you can only see who posted recently and the top 40 blogs for the day, based on hit counts ( ROL-561). Rick Ross has suggested adding a language field for each weblog entry, so that visitors can switch between the all languages front page to view only French entries, only Spanish, or whatever they prefer ( ROL-423). We've also discussed the idea of adding a community aggregator to the fron page ( ROL-596).

Better comment management

We've come a long way with comment spam protection in Roller 1.0, but have a ways to go. We have both CAPTCHA and simple math-question comment authenticators, but we could use some others. And we need better ways to manage, edit, and even bulk delete comments ( ROL-563).

Better plugin support

We have plugins now -- such as the read-more, wiki, and others -- but they could do so much more. We have discussed a proposal to expand plugin support to allow plugins to add arbitrary metadata to blog entries and to allow plugins to hook into the weblog editor ( ROL-601). Such a plugin would make it very easy to add support for Podcasting ( ROL-597).

Better URLs and GUIDs

Tim Bray commented on Roller's "lame" perma-links, which need fixing ( ROL-594). Also, Roller permalinks include the publication dates which can be changed so they don't really make good GUIDs -- we should fix that as well ( ROL-595). We'd better fix those are the same time too, so that Charles at Javablogs.com doesn't have to endure multiple floods of new JRoller and blogs.sun.com entries.

Administrative Improvements

Changes are also needed to help support Roller administrators. For example, a Roller admin should have a super-user capability so that they can view, edit, and delete any blog entry or comment in the system. ( ROL-600). To ease the pain of Roller installs, we need a real installer (we've discussed this on mailing list and IRC, but there is no JIRA issue). And poor old bug #9   which calls for a forgot-my-password page, has been ignored for far too long.

That's all I have for you tonight. Now it's your turn. What features do you think Roller needs most?

I'm not sure how many of the reported 2,800 internal blogs at IBM are running Roller, but it's pretty clear that the blog in the screenshot is a Roller based blog. I've heard from multiple sources that they're running a forked version of Roller (looks to me like circa 0.9.7). It's time to upgrade to 1.0 guys and join the fun on the Roller dev-list. We'd love to see your mods.

I'm using the Winter break to work full-time on Blogs, Wikis, and Feeds in Action, so the 1.0 release will have to wait until the new year. The good news is, although there are some bug reports rolling in (pun always intended), Roller 1.0 has been running very well at blogs.sun.com.

The full Roller 1.0RC2 announcement can be found on the Roller project blog. In addition to lots of bug fixes, we also added a new JCaptcha based comment authenticator. I've got it running on this site if you'd like to try it out.

JCaptcha integration was really easy because JCaptcha developer Marc-Antoine Garrigue did all the work. He implemented the Roller CommentAuthenticator interface and documented the integration process. Now all you have to do to enable CAPTCHA support in Roller is to uncomment a line in Roller's web.xml file. Thanks Marc-Antoine.

Roller 1.0 is very, very close, possibly only a day or two away. I'm still fighting a mysterious bug that is preventing Firefox 1.0 browsers from logging into my test server. We use Apache mod_rewrite to rewrite the blogs.sun.com URLS, so we can have http://blogs.sun.com/<username> redirect to http://blogs.sun.com/roller/page/<username>. For some reason, this prevents Firefox 1.0 from logging in (via standard Servlet Authentication). All other browsers work fine and if I turn off mod_rewrite Firefox 1.0 works too.

Configurable pings for Roller?

Configurable pings for Roller? 03/31/2005 08:04 PM

Currently, a Roller user can ask Roller to "ping" weblogs.com when a new post is made. That was a nice feature back in the day, but in modern times there are many different ping targets. Some users might prefer to ping Javablogs.com, while others might prefer to ping Technorati. Some might even want to configure a different ping target for each weblog category.

Anil Gangolli has written a proposal for configurable pings in Roller and has asked for comments. If you're interested in joining the discussion you can join the Roller dev mailing list, comment in the wiki (write me for a login), or if you're really lazy ;-) leave a comment here.

Levels of Roller Customization

Levels of Roller Customization 02/01/2005 10:02 PM

Junkfood has a nice summary of the different levels of Roller customization and the documentation you need to do customization. He writes "Roller is poorly documented" and he's right. I haven't updated the user guide since 0.9.8 and the macro reference, which is auto-generated from tags in the Velocity code just doesn't cut it. I'm working on user and install docs now. Next up are the customization docs.

Here are Junkfood's levels of Roller customization:

1. Edit CSS stylesheets to customize styles.
2. Edit page templates to add/delete/move page elements and Roller macros.
3. Select different theme packages to get different base page templates and CSS stylesheets.
4. Create and use new macros.
5. Override existing Roller macros.
6. Change Roller configuration and installation.
7. Change Apache configuration.
8. Edit Roller source code.

I just wrote up some instructions for configuring Secure Logins for Roller 1.0.

I had to make one minor change in Roller 1.0's Secure Login feature. I found that, when Roller is running behind a web switch, I can't rely on request.isSecure() to tell me if I have an HTTPS connection. I had to add an (optional) request header test. In my case, I have to test for a header named X-SSL to determine if HTTPS is active.

We deployed a beta of Roller 1.1 at blogs.sun.com today, featuring the new built-in "Planet Roller" blogs.sun.com aggregator, which includes both BSC hosted and externally hosted Sun bloggers.

On the planet page, we substitute Technorati rankings (via Te chnorati.java) for the normal hot-blogs listing because we don't track hit counts for external blogs.

And, if you're looking at the Technorati rankings and wondering what a bush-league blogger like me is doing up there with MaryMary and Tim Bray? Well, I'm sorry to say, it's all due to bo gus whuffie. At the time, I actually wrote to the Technorati folks to point out to them that my place in the Technorati 100 was undeserved. They have since rejiggered their formulas (sorry to get so technical) and I'm out of the list, but still highly ranked.
