Mobile Crossing Bluetooth GPS Reviewed

Mobile Crossing Bluetooth GPS Reviewed 07/20/2004 02:29 PM

mobile_crossing_gps.jpg imageMobile Gadget News has an in-depth review of the Mobile Crossing Bluetooth GPS unit, a tiny GPS unit designed to be used in conjunction with Pocket PCs or other Bluetooth-enabled devices (that is to say, don't try to use it as a stand alone GPS unit). With an 8-hour battery life and operation up to 60,000 feet (for pilots, don't cha know), the GPS unit seems to be yet another very solid device from industry newcomer Mobile Crossing (and can be picked up for $210 via the Mobile Gadget News review).

logitech_5025.jpg imageLogitech has a new "affordable" Bluetooth headset on the way, as long as you consider $70 not a lot of money for a fancy speaker and microphone. Believe it or not, I've so far resisted the Bluetooth headset thing, mostly because I don't need one, but also because it pains me to pay almost half-again the price of a phone for something I'd really like to see bundled in. But hey, it's a step in the right direction, at least.

Logitech also announced a "Pro" model which will use AFH (Adapative Frequency Hopping) to prevent interference from other 2.4GHz radios, like Wi-Fi and cordless phones.

Red card, GOP TV spots 08/19/2004 02:24 PM
George W. Bush's latest TV ads juxtapose Iraq's and Afghanistan's flags with footage of Olympic sport, proclaiming, "At this Olympics, there will be two more free nations — and two fewer terrorist regimes." At a campaign stop, Bush said, "just the image of the Iraqi soccer team playing in this Olympics. It's fantastic, isn't it? What a fantastic thought." The possibly medal-bound Iraqi soccer team, however, objects to any such association. While Bush goes on to say, "Here's a country now, battling for a country that is now free. It wouldn't have been free if the United States had not acted," Ahmed Manajid, midfield goes so far as to say, "if he were not playing soccer he would 'for sure' be fighting as part of the resistance."

Broadcom Buys Bluetooth Chipmaker 04/19/2004 05:43 PM
Broadcom's purchase of Widcomm should make it easier to integrate Wi-Fi and Bluetooth together: Widcomm's chips are in a number of major products, the company says, including Dell, HP, IBM, and Sony. An Actiontec Bluetooth adapter that I documented as part of The Wireless Networking Starter Kit chapter on Bluetooth features Widcomm chips--and a quite excellent user interface which I assume was created by Widcomm or a partner....

SMC® Networks (www.smc.com), leading provider of networking solutions for the SMB/e, the ISP and all the way home, today announced the newest member of the EZ Connect™ family of home networking products, the SMC-BT10 EZ Connect Wireless Bluetooth® USB Adapter. The new Bluetooth USB adapter makes it easy to set-up a personal area network (PAN) that connects up to seven Bluetooth-equipped devices such as wireless phones or PDAs. Bluetooth EDR: Triple Speed Bluetooth

Bluetooth EDR: Triple Speed Bluetooth 06/10/2004 11:38 AM

bluetooth.jpgThe Bluetooth SIG, the group that controls the standards that define the short-range radio networking technology has announced a proposal for a new version of Bluetooth that offers data rates almost 3 times as fast as the previous version. Called Bluetooth EDR (for Enhanced Data Rate), the new specification claims data rates of up to 2.1Mbps and remains backward-compatible with the original Bluetooth spec. No word, however, if the enhanced data rate will causes a proportionate decrease in range, not unlike 802.11g compares to 802.11b.
