The new Turing Xserve Cluster at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) is the one of the latest large-scale high speed computing systems to use Apple's Xserve G5. The director in charge of the program said the decision to use Apple hardware and software made sense based on price, performance, compatibility, efficiency and support.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the Quaker Valley School Board voted unanimously to approve a US$3.1 million lease that will put about 1,200 Apple desktop and laptop machines in place for students attending the district's high schools. The lease expands a three year old computer literacy initiative already in place that's put laptops in the hands of students in grades 3 - 12. With this expansion, laptop and desktop computers will be available for use in libraries, computer labs and on mobile computing carts throughout the district's elementary and middle schools.
