Your regularly scheduled social porn
Your regularly scheduled social porn
06/14/2004 10:01 AMI have no idea why I've been on this "ranting on technology,
usability, and social issues" mode for the past few weeks.
Perhaps it signifies that I'm getting back up to speed on actually
doing something. I've probably churned out more code on
JSPWiki
in the past few weeks than the first quarter of the year. You might
actually see a release some day :)
I also had the privilege of meeting some very charming and beautiful
ladies during the weekend, some of them being new and the others old
acquaintances, so perhaps that also lifts my spirits. Or vice versa.
It also happened that I managed to break my personal ban on buying new
CDs, and I got the new CD from Nightwish, along with a bunch of
good, old Finnish pop music.
Oh how I wish for soothing rain
All I wish is to dream again
My loving heart lost in the dark
For hope I´d give my everything
-- Nightwish: Nemo
(Ok. So perhaps not so positive. But that's Finnish pop music for
you :-)

03/23/2005 05:19 PMAP - Can animal genes be jammed into plants? Would tomatoes with
catfish genes taste fishy? Have you ever eaten a genetically modified
food? The answers are: yes, no and almost definitely. But according to
a survey, most Americans couldn't answer correctly even though they've
been eating genetically modified foods unlabeled for
nearly a decade.

Save The Children calls on release of Iraqi children from jails.
This apparently in response to
recent media
reports on the abuse of children in Iraqi prisons. And it's not
just Save the Children who is concerned, but UNICEF, Amnesty
International, and the Red Cross.
Infact, Congress has called for
a special briefing tomorrow from the Pentagon on
"confidential reports" from the Red Cross on prison
conditions in Iraq. The Pentagon is closing the briefing to the
public, however, and apparently thinks that even Congress shouldn't
know the details of how we treat prisoners.
"It's something of a stretch of policy and procedures
to give them to the Congress," Rumsfeld spokesman
Larry Di Rita said.

NMRC's Policy for Hire
NMRC's Policy for Hire
02/05/2005 09:26 PM There's a lot more readily available details about the New Millennium
Research Council than I realized: The NMRC is the co-publisher of a
report that says municipal broadband is anti-competitive and a waste
of taxpayer dollars. eWeek broke the news yesterday that they're a
division of Issue Dynamics, Inc., a group that specializes in creating
the appearance of grassroots and independent support for ideas on
behalf of their clients. They don't hide this speciality. The NMRC
lists this relationship on their About page; I'm embarrassed that I
missed noting this: "The NMRC is an independent project of Issue
Dynamics, Inc. (IDI), a consumer and public affairs consulting firm
that specializes in developing win-win solutions to complex policy
issues." (IDI lists the US Internet Industry Association as a client;
the head of the USIAA wrote part of the NMRC report.) An email
correspondent who prefers to remain anonymous but has had dealings
with the NMRC and IDI wrote in to note, "If you need an 'independent'
third party to provide support for your particular issue interest, IDI
will find an independent expert who will write a supportive piece for
you--the report will then be issued by the NMRC or another front org.
There is no direct money passing from the corporation to the person
writing the research, and as a technical matter, the funding for NMRC
comes directly from IDI. However, people like Verizon pay IDI a pretty
stiff retainer, and IDI essentially uses part of that to fund NMRC."
IDI says about NMRC: "A unique component of Issues Management &
Research services is our relationship with the New Millennium Research
Council. The New Millennium Research Council (NMRC) has an experienced
staff that provides clients with topical briefs, targeted policy
research, and in-depth issue analysis. The NMRC also provides clients
with a network of policy experts who can provide content and services
over a range of topics. NMRC research projects include, but are not
limited to, telecommunications, Internet, and technology policy
issues." The executive director of NMRC, Allen Hepner, wrote in this
article at IDI's site (which is linked from the NMRC About page),
"Next Generation think-tanks are able to present their views to larger
populations including national and influential decision makers and
attain a new level of credibility at a much lower cost. When it comes
to winning the war of ideas, bigger isn't always better in this
case."...
Who would hire Michael Eisner?
Who would hire Michael Eisner?
03/08/2004 11:03 PMIn this
interesting New York Times editorial, Nicholas Kristof looks at
CEO pay from the perspective of "what would this guy do if we didn't
pay him $200 million per year?" (the $200 million/year is what
Michael Eisner earned during some of his better years at Disney
(oftentimes those were bad years for stockholders and employees but
that's another story)). Kristof points out that
"There is a huge supply of would-be C.E.O.'s and negligible demand
from companies for new ones, so their price should be cheap — if
boards would use their leverage. When Jack Welch retired, General
Electric held a contest among three underlings to succeed him. Each
was desperate to get the job. If G.E. had done its usual tough
bargaining, it could have signed Jeffrey Immelt on a 15-year contract
for a mere $750,000 a year in salary, plus reasonable incentives for
long-term success.
"Except for turnaround experts, C.E.O.'s have few transferable
skills and are in little demand elsewhere. The average 63-year-old
head of a plastics company has almost zero chance of finding a better
job elsewhere. One study found that of 77 cases when a major company
had to find a new boss, only twice was this because the C.E.O. had
left for another corporate job.
"Think about it. If Mr. Eisner, who turns 62 on Sunday, wanted to
switch jobs now, what other public company would hire him as its new
chief executive? Frankly, Mr. Eisner is so desperate to hold on to his
job that Disney should try to charge him for the privilege of
remaining in his post."
Eisner has transferred at least $1 billion from Disney's
shareholders' pockets into his personal checking account over the
years. So he probably could afford to pay quite a bit to keep
his job!
