The search wars added another multimedia layer
this week, as Google added the
ability to
upload some video files
to its servers for storage.
Google has recently launched a video search service, including the
ability to query some
television history . Yahoo , one
major competitor for Google, has also launched its own video search tool .

Google launches Video Upload Program
04/13/2005 05:46 PMXeni Jardin:
Oh, lordy -- another humongous Google shoe just dropped.
At present, Google Video
allows you to search within an expanding archive of TV content --
sports, docs, and news, mostly. But today, with the launch of the
company's Video Upload Program, Google has begun accepting video
content from anyone who cares to upload it. Submitted content won't be
available for viewing right away, the Google faq says -- they're just
now starting the gathering phase. And yes, would-be sharers must
consider certain legal and technical details.
What is the Google Video upload program?
The upload program lets you submit videos electronically to Google
Video, as long as you own the necessary rights (including copyrights,
trademarks, rights of publicity, and any other relevant rights for
your content). Just sign up for an account and use our upload tool to
send your videos to Google. The program is still in beta so you won't
see your videos live on Google Video immediately.
Your work deserves to be seen. You've made a great video. Now who
will watch it?
Whether you produce hundreds of titles a year or just a few, you can
give your videos the recognition and visibility they deserve by
promoting them on Google - for free. Signing up for the Google Video
Upload Program will connect your work with users who are most likely
to want to view them.
Sign up and upload...
We're accepting digital video files of any length and size. Simply
sign up for an account and upload your videos using our Video Uploader
(please be sure you own the rights to the works you upload), and,
pending our approval process and the launch of this new service, we'll
include your video in Google Video, where users will be able to
search, preview, purchase and play it. Find out more here.
For major producers...
If you're from a TV station or production facility, we have a separate
process to help you join the Google Video Upload Program. Find out
more here.

Google Quietly Launches Video Upload
Offering
Google Quietly Launches Video Upload
Offering
04/13/2005 07:23 PMA few weeks ago, Larry Page mentioned in passing Google's plan to
let
users upload videos, making Google one of any number of new
players in this suddenly intriguing space of video storage (following
the insanely hot space of photo storage). It appears that
Google
has now launched the beta version of this program quietly (as
quietly as Google can launch anything -- meaning it's spreading fast).
It appears to have some interesting features, including letting you
charge people to download your videos, which puts it in competition
with new offerings like Brightcove. Either way, it's yet another
extension of easy media creation... from text, to audio, to video --
the tools of creations, storage and distribution are all getting
easier. While the easy claim is to dismiss it because there will be a
ton of useless crap (which there absolutely will be), that's missing
the real potential such video creation tools have. What's crap to
some people, won't be to others -- and the ability to find new gems
that weren't possible before will outweigh an infinite amount of
dreadful content.

A weblogging tool, Ecto, has a new feature: Movie upload. It offers users an
option to indicate how an uploaded movie is used in the weblog (blog)
entry. There are two options: Ecto creates a link to the movie inside
your blog entry. The second option: the movie is then inserted right
into your blog entry. [Roland

08/29/2004 04:10 PMAP - The promise of Internet-based video has long been hamstrung by
copyright and piracy worries, slow dial-up connections, technical
challenges and consumer disdain for watching blotchy videos on their
home computers. But a Silicon Valley startup is tackling those
obstacles, hoping to become the first major provider of cinema
straight from the Internet to the living room boob tube.
