Phillip Torrone @ Make:
Make your own Nine Inch Nails

MacMinute has a story about Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails making the band's new single, "The Hand That Feeds" available to download for Mac users with GarageBand to mix and mash up (an actual multi-track audio session). "For quite some time I've been interested in the idea of allowing you the ability to tinker around with my tracks -- to create remixes, experiment, embellish or destroy what's there," Reznor says. Here's a screenshot of it on my Mac (View image) and here's where to get it (70MB file). Here are a couple of the first remixes!

How excellent. This is almost like open source music. It's one thing to say, "hey it's OK to sample this." It's taking it to a totally different level to publish it as a Garage Band project. Now if only they would put some kind of Creative Commons license on it, it would be perfect.

AP - The National Spelling Bee took a scary turn Thursday when a 13-year-old Colorado boy got lightheaded and collapsed on stage, drawing gasps from an audience packed in for the finals. Akshay Buddiga gathered himself after a few seconds, stood up and, to the amazement of the judges, immediately started spelling his word: "alopecoid."

Nine Inch Nails Releases GarageBand
Music
04/16/2005 09:26 PM

Anyone using an Apple will have a special treat in store for them. Trent Reznor from the Nine Inch Nails has released the full-tracked GarageBand Format of their song, "The Hands That Feeds". This is a first as far as we know. Here is the info direct from Trent and you can download the song from MacMegaSite.

For quite some time I've been interested in the idea of allowing you the ability to tinker around with my tracks - to create remixes, experiment, embellish or destroy what's there. I tried a few years ago to do this in shockwave with very limited results.
After spending some quality time sitting in hotel rooms on a press tour, it dawned on me that the technology now exists and is already in the hands of some of you. I got to work experimenting and came up with something I think you'll enjoy.
What I'm giving you in this file is the actual multi-track audio session for "the hand that feeds" in GarageBand format. This is the entire thing bounced over from the actual Pro Tools session we recorded it into. I imported and converted the tracks into AppleLoop format so the size would be reasonable and the tempo flexible.
So...
You need a Macintosh and you need GarageBand 2.0. If you have a newer Mac, you already have the software. The more RAM you have the better. I did this on a PowerBook 1.67 w/ 2G RAM but it has been running on far less powerful systems.
Drag the file over to your hard disk and double click it. Hit the space bar. Listen.
Change the tempo. Add new loops. Chop up the vocals. Turn me into a woman. Replay the guitar. Anything you'd like.
I gave this to my crew and band to test out and all work effectively stopped for a while - it's fun to mess around with. I've now heard a country version of the track as well as an abstract Latin interpretation (thanks, Leo).
There are some copyright issues involved, so read the notice that pops up. Giving this away is an experiment. I'm interested to see what comes of it, what issues are raised and what the results are.
Have fun-
Trent Reznor

End of the quarter report 03/31/2005 08:01 PM

My lightest blogging 1/4 - it's been a hell of a three months.

We finally got ourmedia.org out. We're up to 8,381 signed up members in a little over one week. That's about 1k people a day. Not bad for running on a Drupal single processor machine with almost no infrastructure behind it.

We've found some bugs on the Internet Archive which our traffic is aggravating - but we'll clean that up - soon enough. Kudos to Boris and James at Bryght and my homeboys Gaurav and Ashish outside of Delhi for all this.

Meanwhile JD is cat herding with a ton of moderators, editors and volunteers helping out.

March has been a big month for Yahoo - with the purchase of Flickr, the release of Yahoo 360 and Media RSS. I agree with Ben Hammersley - Yahoo is definitely leading over Google right now.

I just can't wait to see what Adam Bosworth comes up with. And if they'll LET HIM do what he's gotta do.

And Microsoft revealed InfoCards - and I did three conferences in a row.

Now what's in store for Q2 '05?

I'm betting Google will release something coolio, 6A will finally get off their butts and do something coolio and our efforts at OpenTopics will quickly take form. This will give Paolo and Matt a chance to finally shine in the sun.

Meanwhile wait till you see what we're doing with Avid and a company called Visual Media. Ever heard of JahShaka? 200k downloads.

This is getting fun. Special thanks goes out to the Mingle team, for making Yahoo 360 coolio, but SO coolio that there's not room for improvement and MANY white papers to explain this to everyone. But Y 360 certainly HAS heated up the space.

Oh yah - Tribe.net has a new CEO.

So in case you're wondering why I haven't been blogging as much, we're making money and feeding that money to pay for ourmedia.org (among other projects.) Who says you gotta have VC money?
