Andy Raskin has turned in a very good, long feature on Creative Commons -- including some quotes from me -- that does a terrrific job of explaining the project and why it's important.

The "sharing economy" is built on a supply-and-demand equation wholly alien to traditional media companies -- the record labels, Hollywood studios, and publishing houses that support strict copyright enforcement. It's powered instead by the Allan Vilhans of the world, digital artists who promote sharing as a means to obtain everything from 15 minutes of Internet fame to licensing deals, job offers, and mainstream publishing contracts. For these artists, rampant Internet file swapping isn't a threat, but a blessing: the cheapest way to move from unknown to known.

The sharing economy is already worth billions of dollars, but its direct beneficiaries aren't mainstream entertainment companies. Instead, they're the likes of Apple (AAPL), Adobe (ADBE), and EarthLink (ELNK) -- firms that sell the hardware, software, and bandwidth required to produce and distribute, say, a Howard Dean howl remix. But for the sharing economy to expand its scope and realize its full potential, it needs a signpost: a branded icon participants can use to tell each other, "Download my work. Modify it. Send it to a friend. Please." Creative Commons aims to play that role.

I'm not a big fan of Mad Catz products, as a rule, but they do have the minor distinction of being the first company to announce peripherals/accessories for the upcoming Nintendo DS handheld, including a hard case, screen protectors, game cases, a car charger, AC adapter, earphones, replacement styluses, and 'DS Kit' and 'DS II Mobile Kit' bundles. This will probably be the last time I mention DS accessories like this, though, so lets just take a moment to reflect.

San Diego, Calif.-based Mad Catz Interactive Inc. -- a company best known for making accessories for video game consoles -- announced Wednesday "accessory starter kits" aimed at Apple's iPod and iPod mini. Kits include a FireWire/USB data and recharger cable, a car power adapter and a carrying case. The kits for iPod will work with new fourth generation iPods as well as third generation devices, and will be available in black. iPod mini kits will be available in silver, gold, blue, green and pink. The kits will cost "between US$29.99 and $49.99" when they debut this fall in North America and Europe. The company's Web site had not been updated with information about the new products as MacCentral posted this article.

PC hardware review site EnvyNews reviews three low-end Bluetooth products from EPoX, the BT-HS01 wireless Bluetooth headset, the BT-DG03 Bluetooth USB Dongle, and probably most interesting, the BT-PA01 Bluetooth parallel printer port. While the dongle and headset come across only so-so, the BT-PA01 acts as a wireless parallel cable, allowing wireless connectivity to most older printers with only one catch: the communication is only one-way, meaning any diagnostic or error information sent by your printer back to your computer will be lost. Since most of us have USB or Ethernet-enable printers these days, this is a 'probably not needed by most, but nice to know it's there' sort of product.
