GNER Turns on First Commercial UK Train
07/06/2004 10:11 AMGNER has started the commercial launch of its onboard Internet access
service on the East Coast Maine Line in the UK: Swedish firm Icomera
has unwired the first commercial GNER run--previously, it was all
testing--and nine more runs will follow. First-class passengers have
free access to the continuously available wireless service, while
other riders pay £2.95 to £9.95 per trip. A fascinating
estimate lurks at the end of this BBC story: According to telecoms
analysts BWCS, 625 million people worldwide will be travelling on
wi-fi enabled trains within the next five years....

« Welcome home Courmayeurs Stairway to Heaven, a.k.a. Otava!
»
We left for Stockholm on Sunday evening as it was finally time to go
get our new baby and bring him home. The seas were pretty rough
through the night and I began to worry that maybe an hour or three in
a crate on a plane might have been a less stressful option than the
slow overnight boat. Unless you enjoy the drinking or loading up on
the duty-free stuff, there's really not much to do on these boats in
bad weather except read and try not to think about the Poseidon
Adventure.
After four or five hours of wandering aimlessly around Stockholm, we
met the breeders back at the ferry terminal for our lovely puppy. It
must be the most difficult moment for all breeders when the puppies go
off to their new homes. The puppy arrived in the back of their Volvo
wagon and I wasn't entirely sure what size to expect since it had been
so long since HB was that age; he's 15kg, he has huge paws, he's only
a little more than 3 months old. :) We said good-bye to Lasse and
Sussi and took him to the ship which was a bit of an adventure since,
for him, everything was new and confusing. Saints have a lovely trait
of quietly observing the world around them and so, we did a lot of
waiting while he observed and did a lot of coaxing to get him onto the
boat before it left the dock without us.
He settled into the room on the ship rather quickly by comparison to
the doubtful trek we took through the terminal. He drank some water,
flopped down on the blanket we brought for him, toyed a little with
the kong tennis ball and started napping shortly thereafter. We got
some sandwiches from a cafe and sat around reading for a few hours
when he woke up and tried to nibble on the book in my hand. Jarkko
looked up and said, "Otava", the name of the great bear constellation
and a book publisher, which I immediately thought perfect for him. He
made all the right signals when he needed to go pee, even if he was
more than reluctant to leave the room he seemed to love riding in the
lift up to the 'poop' deck. He even slept through the night without
much trouble, perhaps lulled to sleep by the hum of the ship's
engines.
The EU has a new 'pet passport' regulation and it really does look
like a passport with a photo and pages for a lifetime of vaccinations,
vet certifications and customs stamps. We had to wait around for a
little while for the Tulli guy to come around and check Otava's papers
since the pet inspectors never seem to be on the premises. The same
thing happened when we brought HB from the US as we could have cruised
on through the airport into Finland, but if I go to the trouble to
fill out the paperwork, someone better be prepared to check it. I was
awfully surprised that the customs guy hadn't seen one of these new
pet passports yet though.
We arrived home and tried to make him feel safe, loved and welcome so
we gave him water, food and a little space to wander around and check
things out. It must be so disorienting for him as everything is new
and very unlike the cozy kennel out in the Swedish countryside which
was all he had ever known until now. So far he has been very happy to
stick as close to us as possible. He came with us for a brief visit to
the local pet shop a few blocks away for a proper adjustable puppy
collar and it seemed liked he trusts us a wee bit more. The next few
weeks will be important to help him have as many positive
introductions to new things as possible while teaching him what is and
is not acceptable behaviour with much patience. And lots of love.

Arrival in a Narrow Country
02/10/2004 02:44 AMFlew from Miami to Panama City, Panama yesterday. While
sitting in a comfortable leather seat aboard an American Airlines 757
and eating a filet mignon lunch, I looked down at Cuba.Supposedly they
have everything to which we Americans aspire, i.e., universal health
care and an excellent public education system. Yet Cubans are
dirt poor and it is we ignorant and infirm residents of the United
States who designed and built the 757. The comparison isn't
quite fair but really you'd think that the Cubans, being so well
educated and blessed with a large and fertile country, would have done
better for themselves. Perhaps politics do matter, a sobering
thought as Election 2004 sweeps across the U.S.
Graham, a Kiwi flight instructor from www.helipan.com, picked me up at the
big international airport here (PTY) and, after a brief stop to change
into shorts, we went to the small domestic airport and preflighted a
Robinson R22 helicopter, removed the doors, and, with the Pacific
Ocean at our backs, took off north along the Canal. A moderate
rain, unseasonable this time of year in Panama, pelted my bare skin
though the gaping holes in the sides of the machine, now approaching
its 100 mph (160 kph) cruising speed. Soon the rain ended,
however, and we were abeam the magnificent Miraflores Locks. After
skirting the airspace over a prison and a rainforest resort we dropped
down to 500' over the jungle bordering Lake Gatun, the heart of the
Panama Canal. A few minutes later we were coming up on Colon,
the big city and free trade zone at the Caribbean end of the Canal.
After a quick glance down at the collapsed rusting rooftops of
downtown Colon it is not hard to believe that this is the
unemployment, poverty, and crime capital of the nation.
"... children run about in rags and the city's largely
black
population lives in rotting buildings. ... If you walk
its streets,
even in th emiddle of the day, expect to get
mugged. It really is
that bad."
-- Lonely Planet guidebook (this is a publisher that thinks
Columbia is a nice safe country to visit!)
Cruising at 80 mph west from Colon, 50' above the breakers, we
reached the mouth of the Rio Chagres, whose prodigious flow in the
rainy season stymied the Canal builders. This is the river that
the pirate Henry Morgan used in 1671 to gain access to the original
settlement of Panama City. On the cliffs above the sea is the
ruined Fuerte San Lorenzo, built to protect the Spanish gold trade
from guys like Henry Morgan. Adjacent to the fort is a partially
fenced grassy area. Graham decided to put the R22 down there. We
walked around the fort for a bit, looked at the rusty cannon, and then
fired up for the return trip to Panama City, landing just at
sunset.
Then it was back to the hotel for a shorts-and-T-shirt dinner at a
table outdoors, on a patio overlooking Canal-bound ships going
underneath the Puente de las Americas. The helicopter pilots
talked about their jobs on the tuna boats here. The 200'-long
tuna boats carry a light helicopter so that the captain can go up and
coordinate the action of little speed boats that collect the
nets. When the work is done the pilot has to land on a rolling
metal deck, often spread with a net to provide friction. "Sounds
like landing on a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier," I observed. "Oh,
it is much harder than that," the pilots noted. "Remember that
this is a very small ship and it goes up and down with the waves
a lot more." Tuna boat helicopter pilots tend to be young and
unmarried.

Trains vs. Airplanes
Trains vs. Airplanes
12/04/2003 01:29 AM Tra
ins vs. Airplanes. Amtrak has reported record ridership levels for
the Thanksgiving season. But the success of the rails is indebted to
post 9/11 air-travel anxiety. Maybe, it would be better for travelers
to stop fearing hijackings and resume flying planes instead of riding
intercity trains out of fear. On the other hand, it could be a good
thing that rail travel is getting a second look after years of
decline.
Wi-Fi Use on UK Trains Popular
Wi-Fi Use on UK Trains Popular
09/21/2004 12:42 PMWi-Fi service on UK trains is seeing solid growth in usage: Use of the
service is growing 77 percent week over week, but that figure is a bit
misleading because the number of trains offering Wi-Fi is also
increasing. However, users are also spending an increasing amount of
time on the network and there seems to be an indication that
passengers are deciding to buy first class tickets because the Wi-Fi
access there is free. In other commuter Wi-Fi news, Sydney, Australia
is considering offering Wi-Fi on Sydney ferries....
Bullet Trains
Bullet Trains
01/04/2004 12:23 AMJapan's maglev train sets record: CNN had a story on
Headline News about maglev trains and it got the geek in me all
excited. They mentioned this one.
The experimental three-car maglev was carrying passengers
when it set the world's top speed for a train, clocking at 581 kph
(361 mph)...
Now, here's the deal: 600 m.p.h. in a plane is not really a
problem, because there's nothing to run into in the air (I know, I
know — other planes, buildings, the ground...don't get smart).
But 361 m.p.h. on train tracks? On the ground? Where there are
things like cars, and cows, and school buses full of little children
that could end up on the tracks? That 361 m.p.h. would seem so much
faster if you ran into something.
It happened in 1998 in Germany. One hundred twenty people died when abullet
train derailed and hit an overpass. And it was only travelling at 175
mp.h.
I don't want to be alarmist or anything, but that kind of speed,
that close to stuff that's as unforgiving as an overpass just makes me
a little nervous. And it's only a matter of time before Jon Voight
and Tom Cruise get into
a fight on top of one of them, and then what happens?

More Wi-Fi on European Trains
More Wi-Fi on European Trains
02/10/2004 02:40 AMEurostar, the train operator, will start testing Wi-Fi access on its
cross-channel services this year: But service won't be available while
in the tunnel under the English Channel. Another train operator, GNER,
has been experimenting with Wi-Fi on its trains. It achieves coverage
in tunnels by stringing together cell phone antennas to maintain the
connection, which otherwise is backhauled via satellite. Apparently
train operators are hoping that Wi-Fi services will draw customers
back away from short-haul airlines....

Freight trains in the sky (a.k.a. Fun

04/09/2004 04:11 PMA post for airplane nerds only...
Mountains climbing nearly to 12,000' separate the Los Angeles basin
from the Palm Springs and Joshua Tree area. A layer of clouds
between 4000' and 6000' covered all of the Los Angeles airports.
Thus it was necessary to proceed from Sedona into Los Angeles on an
Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) clearance. The minimum enroute
altitude on the direct airway from Twentynine Palms into LA is 13,500'
due to the fact that this airway goes straight over some of the
tallest peaks. I was flying along at 14,000', breathing bottled
oxygen, and got called by ATC: "Fly heading 230 for a
train."
I banked the airplane and looked down wondering what kind of
monster freight train they might have out West that would require an
airplane at 14,000' to adjust its course.
Then I realized that perhaps the call was "Flying heading 230 for
terrain."
