04/13/2005 09:02 AMToshiba Corp. is working towards doubling the storage capacity of its
0.85-inch hard-disk drive, it said Wednesday. The drive is physically
the smallest available from any disk drive maker. It went into mass
production earlier this year and can store up to 2GB of data in its
first-generation form. Toshiba is currently working on a new version
that will include two disk platters, allowing it to store up to 4GB of
data, said Midori Suzuki, a spokeswoman for Toshiba in Tokyo.

08/04/2004 10:03 AMToshiba Corp. will begin
mass-producing a 60GB, 1.8-inch hard-disk drive before the end of the
year, it said Wednesday. Such drives are commonly used in digital
music players and sub-notebook computers. The new drive offers a
50-percent improvement in storage space over Toshiba's current highest
capacity 1.8-inch hard-disk drive yet manages this without being
physically larger. The major factor that contributed to this increase
was an advancement made in a thin-film technology used for both the
head and platter, said Midori Suzuki, a spokeswoman for Toshiba in
Tokyo.

Toshiba SD-P5000 15-Inch Not A Monitor
06/24/2004 09:47 AM
My first thought
after seeing this 15-inch LCD panel with DVD from Toshiba was, "Of
course! A decent VGA monitor that doubles as a somewhat portable movie
player. How lovely. I need a snack," but as I looked at it, it seemed
as if it actually doesn't have VGA ins, so ... why not? It absolutely
kills me to have all these perfectly decent LCD televisions unable to
accept a VGA signal. In the past, sure, it made sense. Television CRTs
were huge but had awful resolution and computer CRTs were small and
had high resolution, but that's increasingly not the case. Anyway,
just as I got really confused, I noticed this diagram at the bottom,
which if I'm interpreting correctly means the Toshiba SD-P5000 can,
through a series of intricate MPEG encodings and I/P processes, turn a
DVD into a fish. Oh, okay then, no VGA forgiven.

Keitai Watch has posted a report from the "PDA Solutions

version of the "GENIO e" Windows Mobile PDA. And by attractive, I mean
VGA - 640 x 480 resolution. On a 4 inch screen, no less. Yes, I am
attracted to 4" VGA screens, and it takes a man to admit it.

StorageTek's new tape rack: same size,
double capacity
StorageTek's new tape rack: same size,
double capacity
07/01/2004 10:29 AMStorage Technology Corp. (StorageTek) has produced a new 100TB tape
library that slots into a standard rack size but provides twice as
much capacity as competing products. The StreamLine (SL) 500 is a 30 to
577 slot rack-mount tape library that supports the Hewlett-Packard
Co., IBM Corp., and Seagate Technology LLC linear tape open (LTO)
format and, soon, DEC/Quantum Super Digital Linear Tape (SDLT)
format. It can have Fibre Channel or SCSI connectivity and offers
capacity on demand. Additional drives or slots are delivered and
enabled by an electronic key. The SL500 main advantage though is its
capacity -- at 90 slots per square foot, it is far denser than ADIC's
Scalar 100 with 36 slots/sq ft, or Overland's Neo family with 40
slots/sq ft.StorageTek believes customers want rack-based and modular
libraries in the mid-range area. Standard racks fit in their data
centers and in-rack expansion with a single controller/robotics module
preserves reliability whilst providing scalability. (Robotics and
other components can be duelled for increased reliability.)The SL500
is an intrinsic part of its Information Lifecycle Management (ILM)
strategy, the company said. It may have additional functionality
offered in the future as part of this, such as a disk cache or virtual
tape system. It is positioned below the SL8500, a much larger library
with 1,000 to 300,000-plus slots and up to 2,043 drives. The SL500
also comes in a smaller deskside cabinet with 2 drives and 30-50
slots. The SL500, like the SL8500, can have any tape format in any
slot; partitioning is logical rather than physical.StorageTek said
that competing Quantum M Series and Overland Storage Inc.'s Neo are
monolithic because expansion adds more components and decreases
reliability and, eventually needs a cabinet change.Sun Microsystems
Inc., which already resells the SL8500, "will evaluate the SL500,"
according to Christopher Jones, Sun's EMEA business manager for
networked storage. Sun and StorageTek also announced a much expanded
partnership, going beyond the existing OEM relationship. Jon Benson,
StorageTek's general manager for its automated tape solutions group,
expects that its high-end Powderhorn libraries will eventually be
replaced by the Streamline line and that a low-end Streamline model
will be introduced. No end-of-plan exists for Powderhorn though and
availability throughout 2005 was confirmed.BRM software was also
announced which monitors backup status from servers, across the SAN,
and on to StorageTek tape libraries such as the L Series and
StreamLine family. There are indications that StorageTek may announce
a NAS product, possibly later this year and enter the
content-addressed or object storage space. The SL500 will become
available later this year, possibly Q4, when its price will be
announced. With just two basic components, controller and slot/drive
modules, don't expect premium pricing.

the MSI Mega Cache 15, a portable 1.5GB USB hard drive that is aiming
for a chunk of the flash memory segment with its very reasonable $150
price (1GB flash drives are hovering around $175 - $300 at the
moment). Wrapped up in an attractive brushed aluminum chasis, the Mega
Cache performs exactly as advertised, making it a viable alternative
to most other small portable media, especially considering its small
size (it's using a 1-inch drive). If you use one with a Powerbook it
would look like it were suckling its own child.

was announced like a year ago? Well it's finally ready to go

that for the few people that actually still need a stinky old format

can leave them our of our PCs for good. I have a floppy drive in this
