VeriSign to Relaunch Loathed SiteFinder
02/10/2004 02:40 AMWashington Post:
VeriSign Reconsiders Search Service.
The problem,
critics have said, is that given VeriSign's role as the operator of
the dot-com and dot-net registries, the Site Finder service causes
repercussions throughout the Internet. VeriSign tells computers,
wireless phones and other products that use the Internet where they
can find dot-com and dot-net addresses -- and when an address does not
exist. Redirecting incorrect Web site queries would force
technologists to reconfigure hundreds of programs and devices to be
compatible with Site Finder.

Alcor life extension site relaunch
Alcor life extension site relaunch
02/01/2005 08:37 PM
Mark Frauenfelder:
My friend, Charles Platt, told me to check out the relaunch of Alcor's
site. Alcor, as you may know, is a life extension foundation. When an
Alcor member dies, his or her body is stored in tanks of liquid
nitrogen in the hopes that future technology will be able to revive
them (the foundation currently has 67 patients in "cryostasis"). The
big advance in cryopreservation is ice-free preservation
(vitrification), which greatly reduces cellular damage that freezing
causes.
Myth 2: Cryonics freezes people.
The current technology favored by Alcor is vitrification, not
freezing. Vitrification is an ice-free process in which more than 60%
of the water inside cells is replaced with protective chemicals. This
completely prevents freezing during deep cooling. Instead of freezing,
molecules just move slower and slower until all chemistry stops at the
glass transition temperature (approximately -124°C). Unlike
freezing, there is no ice formation or ice damage in vitrified tissue.
Blood vessels have been reversibly vitrified, and whole kidneys have
been recovered and successfully transplanted after cooling to
-45°C while protected with vitrification chemicals.
Left: A rabbit kidney suspended in a transparent solution of
vitrification chemicals, but without vitrification solution inside it,
is frozen solid at a temperature of -140°C.
Right: Another kidney with vitrification solution inside it is
preserved without freezing at the same temperature of
-140°C.

eMusic relaunch: new features, editorial
content
09/22/2004 02:19 AM
Online music provider eMusic announced on Tuesday a relaunch of its
Web site that features new editorial content and search tools. The
service launched in 1998 and currently sells over 1,000,000 MP3
downloads per month, with more than 500,000 songs available in a wide
variety of genres. Its new roster of editors and writers, who help
guide users toward the type of music they like, was culled from
well-known newspapers and magazines while such added features as "Tell
a Friend" and "Neighbors" expand the site's browsing options with the
ability to e-mail information about tracks to friends and the chance
to create a profile and connect with others who share similar
interests.

languages (I won't talk about C++/KDevelop/Anjuta or Java/Eclipse) and
little-known or independently developed languages.

Over the course of the last six months, Best Software has launched six
new versions of
ACT!, the small-business contact management application. Some of them
are the typical product upgrades and releases expected of every
vendor. Others, such as ACT! for Web, ACT! for PocketPC and ACT! for
Palm, are designed to move the vendor into new markets.

Feedster Actually Works
I know this going to sound silly -- but now I **know** Feedster
works. A friend of mine just bought an iPod and they were asking
me about the FM radio adapter. I know I saw one talked about in
the blog-o-sphere recently so I ran a query for iPod and came up with the result. How damn cool. It
really is like searching either your short term memory or searching
conversations you just happened to listen in on.
A lot of times developers don't actually use the things they
build. Or use them peripherally at best. It really is cool
when they work and you have that "ah ha" moment.

01/18/2004 03:49 PMI've had a wonderful weekend. I've had time to watch four movies from
my "DVDs I am going to watch when I retire since I am never going
to have the time before that" -collection, I have eaten well,
slept - well - sufficiently, and still managed to tick off a few
"things to try before you die" -list and move them onto
"cool, I'll do that again" -list.
So, however, this evening, at a business dinner (don't ask: I know
it's Sunday) I make a complete fool of myself by showing up late
(darn). And not only that - my cough which I thought had already
vanished, decides to have its encore right at the same moment I have
introduced myself and am thirstily sipping from a glass of water. And
what an encore it was: in a surprising combination of sight and sound
the cough (with a mouthful of water) bursts out, spraying the water
across the table, completely surprising everyone. Including me.
The whole table stops, forks suspended midway between plate and mouth,
and I feel the cool and curious look of Japanese businessmen fixed on
my neck, as I try to hide and escape under the table. "Are you
ok?", I hear my boss ask faintly - and I stammer something in
reply that nearly, but not quite, sounds like "yes", cheeks
burning. Oh well, there goes my professional reputation...
I guess this is how the universe collects its debt on happiness. I
recall once, in a shower (I do a lot of my thinking in the shower), I
had a wonderful revelation. I don't recall what it was about anymore,
but it was a profound thing - enlightenment, you could say - and I was
so happy about it that the soap slipped from my hand and fell right
into the toilet. So I guess that was the more important lesson to be
learned of the two: close the lid before you shower.
Irony. The most common element in the universe. And what a wonderful
universe it is! ;-).
