Musician/producer BRIAN ENO will be giving a rare free public lecture next week at Fort Mason in San Francisco on Friday, Nov. 14, in the Herbst Pavillion. Coffee bar opens at 7pm, lecture at 8pm. Directions to Herbst Pavillion are here.

This is not a concert. Brian Eno will be speaking about "The Long Now." His talk will be the first of a monthly series of Seminars About Long-term Thinking, sponsored by The Long Now Foundation (http://www.longnow.org). Eno's talks are usually as amazing as his music...

Admission to the lectures is free (a $10 donation is welcome but NOT required). The hall holds about 700 people. For unticketed lectures like this it's a good idea to come early for a good seat.

Cyberterrorism Lecture

Cyberterrorism Lecture 03/24/2005 04:41 PM

I had the chance to attend a lecture last night by Marcus Ranum on the subject of cyberterrorism. Ranum is the author of the book The Myth of Homeland Security.

Upon my arrival I quickly realized that I was entering a room full of college age kids and was in the minority of people over the age of thirty. Rannum began his lecture with stories of his experiences with airport security and how he really does feel any safer today than he did prior to 9/11. He than began to talk about hypothetical situations or pranks that one could pull in order to cause the TSA (Transportation Safety Administration) a headache. I wonder how many of the college students in attendance may actually try some of his ideas out. It was at this point I began to wonder when he was going to start talk about cyberterrorism.

Ranum followed up his opening statements with what I can only describe as a rant of the obvious. He pointed out the bureaucratic mess that was caused as a result of 9/11. He reiterated the failures in the intelligence communities that have been well document over the past couple of years. I was glad to hear Mr. Ranum clearly state that he was not politically motivated and was happy to point out the failures on both sides of the aisle.
He made it a point to show specific portions of the Patriot Act that are clearly written as political pork as opposed to security. Ranum also repeatedly said do not take his word as the truth and encourage everyone to do their own research.

With twenty minutes left in the lecture the topic of cyberterrorism was finally touched upon. Ranum pointed out that the twenty-seven intelligence agencies on the US do not have compatible systems and still cannot share their data. Yes, this is a weakness and has been known for some time. He also stated that he does not feel that a large scale or coordinated attack would succeed against the IT infrastructure of the US. His thoughts are that this type of attack would only be a bump in the road.

While I was disappointed that the topic of cyberterrorism was only covered for a small fraction of the time the overall lecture was worth the time spent. I have not read Mr. Ranum’s book however, I plan on purchasing it.

To learn more about Marcus Ranum you can visit his website.

He says: "It is time to wake up to this fact. Applied science is rivalling pure science both in importance and in intellectual interest. We cannot leave technology to the technologists; we must all embrace it. We have lived through a revolution in which technology has affected all our lives and altered our societies for ever."

05/20/2004 10:00 AM

Tomorrow night (Thursday) at the New York Public Library there's a free lecture on The Development of the New York City Subway System that sounds interesting.

Transit Historian Peter Derrick will discuss why New York City needed an extensive rapid transit system, the political and financial difficulties in getting new lines built, and the impact the subways had on the growth of the city and the well being of its population. The focus will be on the largest stage of subway expansion, the 1913 Dual System of Rapid Transit, under which most of the existing IRT and BMT lines were constructed.

Free. From 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM.Science, Industry and Business Library, 188 Madison Avenue, New York.

Python2.4 highlights

Python2.4 highlights 09/20/2004 11:18 PM

A.M. Kuchling's "What's New in Python X" documents are always a treat, and his gu ide to the forthcoming Python 2.4 is no exception. Among other things, 2.4 elevates sets to built in type status, dramatically improves the usability of Python's list sort method (for easier application of DSU, aka the Schwartzian transform), makes reverse iteration easier and introduces an alternative string substitution method.

All that's before you get on to the really exciting stuff: generator expressions, the new decimal type (because floating point numbers are such a nuisance) and the controversial function decorators.

I have to admit I didn't understand the significance of half of this stuff until I read about them in "What's New", which explains the use-cases for the new features with great clarity.

Python seems to advance at just the right rate; new features are introduced fast enough to keep me interested (and keep the language feeling alive) but not so fast as to leave me feeling left behind.

Reith lectures focus on technology

For those of you who don't know, basically my job at the moment is to be one-half of a rapid-prototyping and R&D unit with Matt Webb over at the part of the BBC that handles the interactive aspects of the BBC's Radio and Music output. The department makes all the websites for the various Radio Networks as well as interactive TV stuff, stuff for mobile phones and - of course - the Radio Player. It's a pretty cool place to work and I'm proud of the work that we've managed to get done there (more on that in the next few months, hopefully).

So at the moment I'm particularly proud of the work that the department is doing. Basically Radio 4 do a series of programmes each year called The Reith Lectures, in which they get a notable thinker to come in and - over a series of lectures - expound upon a particular scientific, political or social theme. This year Wole Soyinka, Nobel Prize-winning poet, is talking about Climate of Fear. Normally - like many BBC radio shows - you can listen to them again via the BBC Radio Player. But this year they're doing something a bit different and I think pretty significant - they're releasing all the lectures as DRM-free MP3 files for people to download. There's more about this over at Dan Hill's site and Matt Jones has written some commentary on it too (Free as in speech). Hopefully it's the first open distribution of many programmes of this kind - enlightening, significant and weighty pieces of work that actually have the potential to make the world a better place - available for free from the BBC. Fingers crossed.

Reith Lectures 2003: The Emerging Mind

Reith Lectures 2003: The Emerging Mind 12/17/2003 06:02 PM
In 1922, a young Scottish engineer called John Reith was appointed General Manager of a fledgling national broadcasting service, known at the time as the British Broadcasting Company. With little experience and without any established purpose to guide him, Reith shaped the growing institution according to his vision of what a public service broadcaster should be. Reith defined the BBC's role as "to bring the best of everything to the greatest number of homes". He maintained that it was the duty of a national broadcaster to make an intellectual contribution to public life. According to his principles and in honour of his work, the BBC inaugurated the Reith Lectures in 1948. Every year a leading figure is invited to deliver a series of public lectures informed by their particular field of expertise. The purpose of the lectures is "to advance public understanding and debate about significant issues of contemporary interest". The first Reith Lectures were given by Bertrand Russell and notable contributors have consented to participate ever since. Former Reith Lecturers include Robert Oppenheimer, JK Galbraith, John Searle, Steve Jones and Edward Said. This year's Reith Lecturer was Professor Vilayanur Ramachandran, Director of the Centre for Brain and Cognition and professor with the Psychology Department and the Neurosciences Programme at the University of California, San Diego.
