Microsoft Shuts Down Nearly All Southern
California Air Traffic

Microsoft Shuts Down Nearly All Southern
California Air Traffic
09/17/2004 02:31 PM
Whoops. Having just flown back from southern California this past weekend from the DEMOmobile conference, I'm glad this "glitch" didn't happen until Tuesday. Apparently, there was a "radio breakdown" that left almost all air traffic in SoCal without guidance. The culprit? Microsoft. Apparently, the air traffic control system being used is now run on Microsoft, after recently replacing a Unix-based system. Just one problem: the system needs to be rebooted every 30 days to avoid a "data overload," and someone forgot to manually run the reboot. Beyond the shock of discovering that this air traffic control system can't handle very much data, you have to wonder why the reboot system can't be automated, or at least have a "reminder" go off at some point.

12 Year-Old's Anti-Plagiarism Tool
Catches Its Own Creator In The Act
08/16/2004 05:00 AM
A twelve-year-old kid, looking to make sure he's one of the least-well-liked kids in his classroom among the cheaters, has written up a hack that would let teachers run student papers against a Google check to catch plagiarism. Of course, in testing out the program, his teacher discovered that the program caught the very same 12-year-old who wrote the program in a bit of internet plagiarism himself. Guess he should have tested the program at home first on his own work.

Based on this likelihood, you can choose to block e-mail messages at the gateway or at the mailbox store. For more information about Intelligent Message Filter, see Exchange Intelligent Message Filter Overview. Important: Before installing Intelligent Message Filter, you must read the Microsoft Exchange Intelligent Message Filter Deployment Guide. If you do not configure Intelligent Message Filter correctly, your messaging environment can be negatively affected.

Yahoo's Offers New Anti-Spyware Tool...
That Actually Finds Spyware

Yahoo's Offers New Anti-Spyware Tool...
That Actually Finds Spyware
08/05/2004 03:50 AM
It appears that Yahoo heard the backlash loud and clear a few months back when they released an anti-spyware tool that just so happened to skip over adware from Yahoo partners. The latest version, built on PestPatrol's technology will now default to notifying users of both "spyware" and what they consider to be "adware" and then give the user the choice of what to do. I haven't tested the product yet, but it sounds like they're moving in the right direction. It still makes you wonder what they were thinking in offering a purposely crippled offering. People know what spyware is, and telling them that spyware isn't spyware doesn't change how people feel about it. It also doesn't make them look kindly back at the company that provided them with the bogus anti-spyware tool in the first place.
