Wi.Ser 0.6.9 (Default branch)
Wi.Ser 0.6.9 (Default branch)
04/05/2005 05:35 PM

Wi.Ser is a Java/XML server-side GUI-framework
which enables an application to run as either a
monolithic Swing app, a client/server Swing app,
or as a Web app without any change. It includes a
mixed deployment mode, which supports one server to serve Swing
clients and Web clients at the same time. The framework uses XML to
define an application's GUI. It provides a common
widget-based, object-oriented programming
interface for Web and Swing GUIs, which prevents
the developer from struggling with HTML and HTTP
or with the internals of Swing. For Swing client/server applications
the client/server split as well as the client/server communication is
handled transparently by the framework.
The project includes a GUI builder that is based on the framework's
functionality (screenshot, deployed as a Web/HTML application).
Changes:
This release includes a template pool to speed up HTML rendering. A
CSS class can be set for all Web Widgets. A bug in the color settings
method of forms has been fixed. New tags for additional widget
properties are available within the GUI builder. A fix in the listBox
HTML template for Mozilla is included, and the GPL version comes with
a build.xml to integrate into the full distribution again.

Microsoft Working On Greylisting
Anti-Spam Solution
Microsoft Working On Greylisting
Anti-Spam Solution
12/26/2003 02:55 PMWhile others are saying that the only way to stop spam is to
make
people pay for email, others are coming up with slightly more
creative solutions. Realizing that having people actually pay money
to send emails brings up a lot of other problems, it appears that
Microsoft is picking up on the idea of
greylisting by
creating their own style of
spam delay
technology called "Penny Black". The idea is that if you're
sending email from an unrecognized location, the server will slow your
machine down temporarily, making it much more expensive for the
spammer - who needs to get more machines and more bandwidth to keep
sending out the same number of emails. Of course, these days, with
spammers hijacking others' machines, they might not care so much.

Maximum Starbucks density
Maximum Starbucks density
02/01/2005 09:26 PMJustin notes that he's got 43
Starbucks within a 5-mile radius of his apartment and now he's
looking for the highest concentration:
I’ve got 43 Starbucks locations within a five-mile
radius of my apartment. First of all, what the fuck? Second of all,
and I can’t help but to get competitive here, can anyone beat
that?
Update: 162 is the new high (from the top of Regent’s
street in London).
My old work address in Manhattan (45th and Madison) has 169 stores
within 5 miles. Put your
address into the Starbucks locator and see what your Starbucks
density is. (Note: to find the number of stores, scroll to the bottom
of the search listings and find the "(Showing 1-20 of xxx Stores)"
text.)

Positioning Free Wi-Fi for Maximum PR
Positioning Free Wi-Fi for Maximum PR
11/04/2003 10:57 AMIn a routine new-store article, free Wi-Fi gets play: It's a news
event in this New Hampshire town when a 5,400-square-foot Panera
opens, partly because it represents a success for a local franchisee
expanding operations. But note that the free Wi-Fi gets a couple of
grafs. The cost of a couple of grafs that bring more people in to a
Panera initially and as permanent lifetime customers is probably tens
of thousands of dollars. The cost of free Wi-Fi? Hundreds....
