I'm not going to Gnomedex

I'm not going to Gnomedex

I'm not going to Gnomedex 04/13/2005 05:42 AM

I have changed my mind and made a decision not to go to Gnomedex and their are several reasons why that will become apparent in the next month. I had planned on going, but Corante asked first and I am a dad with kids living in Hawaii and peak travel season starts May 30th which means airline tickets go through the roof.

Plus the event only has 300 particpants (important ones I know) but I want to focus on events that are Podcast specific and the Corante event and Podcast Expo are defnitley dedicated to Podcasting.

See you at Gnomedex?

See you at Gnomedex? 04/12/2005 05:46 AM

A picture named allusers.jpgI don't go to many industry conferences these days, but this year's Gnomedex, in Seattle, June 23-25, is shaping up as a gotta-be-there event. I could tell when the guys on the Starbucks Coffee Notes (March 31 in NYC) asked if I was going. Then Kosso, who lives in London (that's in Europe!) asked if I was going. By then I was already working with Chris, but I wanted to leave it a tease, so I said nothing. With  the help of Steve Gillmor, who was at BloggerCon III, we worked out a plan to include a taste of unconference at the beginning of Gnomedex, to help get the "audience" out of their seats, sharing their ideas. You know, just like blogs. And it's cool because I get to go back to Seattle, where I spent four happy months at the end of 2004. I'm totally looking forward to Gnomedex, and thanks to Chris and Ponzi for extending the very generous invitation to keynote! I can't wait.

Pictures taken on the Seattle waterfront, where the Gnomedex will be held in late June this year.

A place to comment, let's start the discussion now.

Gnomedex 5.0 Looks Great

Gnomedex 5.0 Looks Great 06/05/2005 11:08 PM

Wow - has anyone else been watching the list of attendees at this year's Gnomedex? It's like a "who's who" of the blogging world. Here are just a few of the people who are planning to be there:

Gnomedex is at the top of my list of favorite conferences, not just because of the people attending, but because I always learn something new there. For example, last year's Gnomedex is where I learned about podcasting, which resulted in me adding podcast downloading and synching to FeedDemon.

And it looks like there will be a lot of RSS aggregator developers there, too - including Brent Simmons (NetNewsWire), Greg Reinacker (NewsGator), Mark Fletcher (Bloglines), Tim Catlin (Rojo), J.J. Allaire (Onfolio) and (of course) myself (FeedDemon).

If you're thinking of attending, you might want to register now - I wouldn't be surprised if this fills up soon.

Gnomedex 2005

Gnomedex 2005 06/24/2005 03:00 PM

So now I'm up in Seattle for Gnomedex. I missed it last year - as that wa sthe wekend of my father's funeral.

So I WASN'T gonna miss out this year - especially since BOTH my old friends Dave Winer and Adam Curry are the book-ends keynotes.

I get to sit in the audience and heckle - while my ourmedia.org partner JD raps it out. We'll be showing interstitials between sessions all conference.

Meanwhile it's quite a scene. The fire dept was called for some errant smoke detector last night at the opening party and Denise Howell convinced me that motherhood is a saintly experience that every woman shoudl experience. She's glowing.

Got to hang with Mr. Weatherbug Chris Sloop last night for dinner - along with Steve Gillmor, Steve Rubel, Dan Farber and JD. Maybe now I can understand what Attention.xml is all about. I hope Steve uses the 'annotating a podcast' example.

Here's Dave and Matt Mullenweg:

Still Bushed from the Last Gnomedex

Still Bushed from the Last Gnomedex 03/19/2005 03:11 AM

The recent announcement of Gnomedex 5.0 reminded me of a funny story from last year's Gnomedex. See, I was planning to give away FeedDemon and TopStyle T-shirts at the event, but I was having problems with a local T-shirt printing company. To make sure I'd have them in time, I ended up buying a bunch of shirts through my CafePress store instead.

A couple of days later a box from CafePress arrived, and I figured I'd better check the shirts just in case there were any problems. So I opened the box and found...

...a few dozen anti-Bush T-shirts.

No FeedDemon shirts. No TopStyle shirts. Just a whole bunch of shirts spouting anti-Bush slogans.

Now, despite the fact that the anti-Bush shirts were worded more colorfully than mine, I was still really disappointed. To their credit, CafePress sorted out the problem very quickly, but unfortunately not quick enough - I ended up getting on the plane without the shirts, and upon calling my wife when I landed I discovered that FedEx delivered the correct shirts about an hour after I left (arghhh!).

Missing Gnomedex 09/25/2004 03:23 AM

I am super bummed I had to cancel from Gnomedex - but I gotta head back to Chi-town for a memorial for my father.

So my heart goes out to my brothers - Chris, Robert, Ross, Woz and all the other homeboys and girls doing the slopes, getting slippery and Rye or is that Bacardi and Absolut?

Speaking at Gnomedex

Speaking at Gnomedex 06/23/2004 09:22 AM

When I attended Gnomedex last year, I have to confess that I went with muted expectations. As it turned out, though, I had a great time, and rank it among the best conferences I've visited.

This year, not only am I attending the conference but I'm scheduled to speak on one of the panels. Along with blogging gurus Robert Scoble, Henry Copeland and Ross Rader, I'll be discussing how to maximize your blogging strategies. I'm glad I have a couple of months to figure out what to say, because I'm not an experienced public speaker :)

Among the other confirmed speakers are Steve Wozniak, Wil Wheaton and Dan Gillmor.

The conference isn't until September 30 so I'll talk more about it closer to the time, but if you want to attend I recommend registering now. Unlike last year's Iowa-based Gnomedex, this year it's being held in Lake Tahoe - so I expect even more people to be there.

Should we do another one this year?...

Gnomedex: The Summary

Gnomedex: The Summary 10/28/2003 11:08 PM

Gnomedex: The Summary

How do you describe a conference, Gnomedex, where you get to meet and hang out with:

  • Tim O'Reilly -- If you don't get the reference then piffle to you
  • Rob Malda -- the founder of Slashdot
  • Dan Gillmor -- San Jose Mercury News
  • Beth Goza from Microsoft who actually owns a Segway !!!
  • Nelson Minar from Google
  • Nick Bradbury from FeedDemon, Topstyle and Homesite
  • Oh and, of course, Chris Pirillo
  • Tom Bridge from MacSlash
  • And, even better, all the myriad Gnomedexers and Gnomedex Bloggers (who are listed here) -- I got the best suggestions on Feedster from just different random people.  And I'll be implementing those over the next few weeks and months.

Over the next few days I'll blog more about the conference including slides I thought were relevant.  The overall impression I got from the conference was simple -- it rocked.  Chris managed to make a technical conference **fun**.  How often do you see that?  And I have to admit that I was purely in awe of watching Chris' people skills.  For me the most interesting part of the conference was probably just watching Chris interact with people. He's a natural -- its so clear why people pretty much love him.

So if you missed Gnomedex then all I have to say is you should make it next year.  The event was outstanding.  Thanks Chris.

Meet the Aggregators at Gnomedex

Meet the Aggregators at Gnomedex 06/24/2005 03:36 PM

A while back I was talking with Chris Pirillo and Dave Winer about interesting things to do at Gnomedex this year, and we figured that since so many aggre gator developers will be there, we should all get together for some sort of informal luncheon where people who use our software could ask us questions and make suggestions.

The idea went over well with several aggregator developers we spoke with, so it's official - according to the schedule, it's happening at noon on Saturday. As of right now, developers working on NetNewsWire, RSS Bandit, Rojo, Bloglines, Pluck and (of course) FeedDemon will be there, and the invitation is open to other aggregator developers.

I'll be leaving at the crack of dawn Thursday morning to fly to Seattle for the conference, and it looks like it's going to be quite an event - according to numerous sources, there will be some interest ing announcements made there.

Unless Dean Hachamovitch is coming to tell us how Podcasting is integrated into IE at Gnomedex, I think the speculation that Microsoft will be announcing how they have seen the light on Podcast and will have a product ready for us next week is probably not going to happen. But what does the addition of this keynote speaker mean. Could IE7 be released to the world at Gnomedex.

Whatever it is all of my sources are being really quiet and no one is talking. Have a tip send it to geek@geeknewscentral.com [C hris Pirillo]

Gnomedex IV: Geeks gone wild

Gnomedex IV: Geeks gone wild 06/21/2004 12:11 PM

Re surrecting Gnomedex

Hey gang - mind if I have a virtual heart-to-heart with you? As you probably know, life has been very busy for me down here in Southern California. I’m four years removed from Iowa, and eight years into producing Lockergnome. We announced our fourth-annual conference a few months ago, and I’ve watched it blossom into something completely different than what it was in the beginning. I hope you don’t mind my decision to bring Gnomedex back to its roots: the people.

No open bar, no Comedy Central - just a whole bunch of geeks gone wild on their own volition. Since ~50 people had signed up when we were still promoting the “liqueur” angle, we’ll be honoring that offer with drink tickets. It’s Gnomedex 4, plain and simple. Yes, we’ll have parties. Yes, we’ll have speakers. Yes, we’ll have panels. Yes, we’ll have fun. Yes, we’ll have sponsors. Yes, we’ll have WiFi. With these two adjustments, we’ll also keep the original spirit that made our convention so successful in years past. That’s what I really want (more than anything else).

So, there you have it. Gnomedex 2: Attack of the Gnomes. Gnomedex 3: Fellowship of the Geeks. Gnomedex 4: Geeks Gone Wild.

[Lockergnome]

God i hope it's not normal.

I am gettign SO TIRED of sitting in audiences, listening to the same peopel say teh same thing and then waiting for the :30 seconds you're given to ask one question. That format is SO DEAD!

Last week we just debated for 2 hours. That worked.

Chris has the opportunity of doing something new and different. I sure hope he does.

Meanwhile Supernova is this week - let's see how the hecklebot and the backchannel disrupt the flow and create something new.

Gnomedex 4 Officially Announced

Gnomedex 4 Officially Announced 02/12/2004 10:20 PM
They said Lockergnome couldn't do it again. However, we still went ahead and booked a casino in Lake Tahoe from September 30th to October 3rd for the fourth-annual Gnomedex tech conference. This time around, we set up a THREE DAY OPEN BAR - and pre-registration is still $99! How much alcohol can you down in 72 hours? Let's not forget about the whole "technology" thing, either. We'll still have plenty of information for you to download into your soaked little skull. That, and like every respectable host, we won't start activities at the butt crack of dawn. Details will continue to roll in, but I can already see that we'll (ONCE AGAIN) give other conventions a run for their money (and value)....

Check out http://www.feedster.com/news/  when you get a chance.  What we've done here is dynamically (1/2 hour to 1 hour basis) create a "Blogpaper" a virtual newspaper assembled out of different blog entries all with a common theme.  And, of course, the theme is Gnomedex.  So if you're a blogger and talking about Gnomedex, this could well feature you.

Note: The dynamic nature of this won't really show up until people start posting when Gnomedex starts.

Podcasting announcement at Gnomedex
06/06/2005 12:01 AM

A little bird told me tonight that their is major rumors being spread by the Microsoft elite that their will be a major podcast related announcement by Microsoft and maybe even Bill Gates himself at Gnomedex.

Keep the tips coming people and if this one proves to be true, I am going to be in the Gnomedex house watching it go down live. I may even work a deal with some of TechPodcasts.com partners to make that event a live one!

This is going to be a great event and I even hear Google is putting on a party so if all goes well we will get to put a microphone in front of some important people. Plus I am taking bunch of books to give away. If your going to be at Gnomedex lets hook up the night before as I fly in the day before the event kicks off.

Todd..
