Xeni Jardin:
The Department of Justice has opened a criminal investigation and is
demanding records related to an indymedia.org post which expressed
anti-RNC sentiment and listed the names of some 2,200 individual RNC
delegates. More on indymedia's site
here<

ss release:
In a letter sent today in response to a grand jury subpoena issued by
the Secret Service, the American Civil Liberties Union and the New
York Civil Liberties Union said they are representing a web hosting
service and administrators of an independent media website regarding
the anonymous posting of publicly available information about
delegates to the Republican National Convention. The groups said the
investigation is but the latest example of government agencies using
law enforcement powers to chill free speech and intimidate protesters.
(...) Beeson added that the posting did not include anything remotely
threatening, but involved political speech fully protected by the
First Amendment.

for making forbidden art
04/27/2004 11:43 AMA teenager drew some anti-war posters that were critical of Bush's
policies, and his art teacher alerted school administrators, who in
turn called the police. The cops went to the feds, and the Secret
Service questioned the boy about his art.
The drawing that
drew the most attention showed a man in what appeared to be Middle
Eastern-style clothing, holding a rifle. He also was holding a stick
with the oversize head of President Bush on it. The student said the
head was enlarged because it was intended to be an effigy, Cravens
said. The caption called for an end to the war in Iraq.

Secret Service Using Distributed
Computing to Break Encryption
Secret Service Using Distributed
Computing to Break Encryption
03/29/2005 02:55 PMThe Washington Post has an interesting story
about how the Secret Service is using 4,000 of their computers in a
Distributed network attack. The attack is to break passwords on
encryption keys. We all know that getting software to encrypt our
computers is simple and the software is powerful. Breaking into the
encryption itself is not simple but the Secret Service has found that
the real Achilles Heel of a suspect’s encrypted computer is
their passwords. The Secret Service has found that by using all the
emails and plain text documents they find on the suspect's computers,
they can create a brute force word list that will normally find the
password for the encryption in no time at all. Lesson learned? Create
strong passwords unrelated to anything on your computer. Here is more
from the article…
Hansen said AccessData has learned through feedback with its
customers in law enforcement that between 40 and 50 percent of the
time investigators can crack an encryption key by creating word lists
from content at sites listed in the suspect's Internet browser log or
Web site bookmarks. "Most of the time this happens the password
is some quirky word related to the suspect's area of interests or
hobbies," Hansen said.
Hansen recalled one case several years ago in which
police in the United Kingdom used AccessData's technology to crack the
encryption key of a suspect who frequently worked with horses. Using
custom lists of words associated with all things equine, investigators
quickly zeroed in on his password, which Hansen says was some obscure
word used to describe one component of a stirrup.

tying it back
to Bush somehow.

secret law. In response to a September 10th ruling by the 9th Circuit
US Court of Appeals that rejected DOJ's attempt to file their
arguments in secret, the DOJ filed a motion asking the Court to

On Anti-Semitism at Columbia My interest in this story is
primarily about how the New York Times, considered one of the great
newspapers world-wide, in fact sucks!---"A week ago, Deacon and
the Trunk posted on the release of a report by Columbia University on
its investigation of students' charges of anti-semitic conduct by
several of the university's professors. The report mostly exonerated
the professors, while, at the same time, recording behavior by them
which was appalling. One of the points we noted was the craven
behavior of the New York Times, which said that it agreed not to
report the viewpoint of the complaining students in exchange for early
access to Columbia's report. The Trunk wrote:
But what about the New York Times? Is it conceivable that the Times
would enter into an agreement not to talk to the subjects of a report
in exchange for being given access to the report a few hours before it
is made available to the public? [The Times admits it!]
