i-mode Content Forum has agreed to sponsor the first Mobile Monday for 2005 - Tokyo's No. 1 networking event for mobile and technology insiders. This follows HP's withdrawal of their direct sponsorship of Mobile Mondays globally, which was unexpected and left the Tokyo organisers of the event in a quandry. The i-mode Content Forum is the world's largest and most active trade association of i-mode content providers and is pleased to directly support Mobile Monday Tokyo for its opening event of 2005. The Difference Between Online Content
And Broadcast Content

The Difference Between Online Content
And Broadcast Content
02/10/2004 02:46 PM
Major League Baseball made news last year for claim ing to own all in-progress game data - saying they were going to go after websites that reported what was happening at a game in real-time. It didn't matter that the law is pretty clear that you can't copyright facts - MLB believes that just presenting the data is a "rebroadcast" of the game. That said, I guess it's no surprise to hear that they now believe that web audio and video broadcasts of games should work the same way as television broadcasts with a content provider paying a huge upfront fee for the rights to the games, and then telling them they can make it back in ad revenue and subscription fees. Of course, the various internet sites they've approached with this plan have been laughing them out the door, and pointing out that they're not television stations, and they just want to provide something useful to their users - but aren't going to lose money to do so. While MLB has been at the forefront of offering streaming video and audio, it appears they still look on this as a broadcast medium, and not the interactive medium it actually is. They're doing their best to squeeze more money out of existing fans, rather than attract new fans, which is dangerous for the future of the sport. Not only do you anger your biggest fans, you also make it less likely that you're going to pick up new fans.

SBC Pulls Out the Stops in Wi-Fi Deals

SBC Pulls Out the Stops in Wi-Fi Deals 07/20/2004 02:21 PM
SBC Communications announced a host of Wi-Fi partnerships and deals today to extend the reach of its network and maximize traffic passing across locations they operate: SBC will resell access to its FreedomLink network, which will include 300 Caribou Coffee stores (Midwest and South-central and Southeast coast) as well as the thousands of The UPS Store locations, to iPass, GoRemote, and Syniverse. This reselling agreement will be live by the end of 2004. SBC FreedomLink subscribers will have access to Concourse Communications hotspots (JFK, LaGuardia, Newark, Detroit, and Minneapolis/St. Paul), Telmex (400 Mexican locations), and Wise Technologies (an array of retail and airport venues). Access to those locations won't be included in a monthly fee from SBC, but will cost just $4 per day, which is often less than half the cost of the retail prices for those venues. This roaming arrangement will also be in place before year's end. In the same press release, SBC notes that it is selling 3,000 home Wi-Fi gateways each day to SBC Yahoo! DSL customers. They reiterated that later this year, FreedomLink will be offered to its DSL subscribers at a "significant discount." SBC is deploying several tactics at once here, increasing the size of its self-operated network to make the total number of hotspots more appealing to subscribers while also making the network more appealing to resellers. Providing discounted access to other hotspot network is useful for business travelers who may have no compunction about paying $4 a few times a month for airport access. By emphasizing the scale of home Wi-Fi adoption and its coming discounted plan for its millions of DSL subscribers, SBC also makes the network more appealing to new venues considering which hotspot operator to work with....

US Air Pulls Tickets From Expedia

US Air Pulls Tickets From Expedia 12/09/2003 01:19 PM
In the early days of internet commercialization there was all this talk about how it was going to cut out the middlemen. Then, people began to realize that middlemen often (though, certainly not always) serve a purpose in aggregating options for buyers and sellers. Now, however, some industries are beginning to rebel against the more successful middlemen. Already we've seen hotels< /a> try to take back inventory control from travel booking websites, and now, it looks like more and more airlines are doing the same. US Air has now announced that they're pulling their flights off Expedia after Expedia started charging a higher booking fee on US Air flights. In this case, it might just be a contract dispute like last year when Northwest Airlines briefly pulled themselves off Expedia and Travelocity. However, the airlines may be pushing for a bit more control themselves. Most of the major airlines have continued to struggle in the recent past, while "discount" airlines like JetBlue and Southwest have thrived. Some people at the top of the other airlines must also be noticing that JetBlue and Southwest don't offer their fares on Expedia or the other travel sites, but concentrate on selling tickets directly from their own websites. If that trend continues, it could pull the power away from the travel aggregators and move it more to the airlines themselves. It could also mean that travel search engines like Qixo become more popular than travel aggregators like Expedia.
