Punk rock in the holy land

Punk rock in the holy land

Punk rock in the holy land 04/13/2005 01:36 AM

Xeni Jardin: Jessica Smith from FRONTLINE says:

In Israel, a vibrant punk scene has emerged in a society torn apart by the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians. In four candid video interviews, FRONTLINE/World reporter and filmmaker Liz Nord talks to the musicians driving the movement. Like other young Israelis, the punk rockers have been affected personally by the conflict. They have fought as soldiers and lost friends and fans killed by suicide bombers. Bands from both ends of the political spectrum use their music to comment on Israeli society. Others make music just to have fun. But all of them agree that punk rock represents freedom.

Holy Vandals, Holy Grail

Holy Vandals, Holy Grail 05/21/2004 11:17 AM
An historic monument in central England that may hold the key to the location of the Holy Grail was damaged by vandals on Tuesday. The BBC reports that "a gang of youths climbed on top of The Shepherd's Monument at Shugborough Hall" and started smashing away.
"The Shepherd's Monument is of international importance, both as a work of art and because of the legend that a baffling inscription on the monument provides clues to the true location of the Holy Grail," said the home's general manager Richard Kemp.
Interestingly, the vandalism came on the heels of a visit by former code-breakers from War II intent on cracking the 10-letter puzzle. The Shepherd's Monument is discussed in depth in the book Holy Blood, Holy Grail, inspiration for The Da Vinci Code. Link to a National Public Radio piece about the code-breakers. Li nk to the BBC story on the vandalism. (Thanks, Kev!)

Holy Bestseller, Holy Sequel

Holy Bestseller, Holy Sequel 05/20/2004 11:37 AM
The Da Vinci Code author Dan Brown says he considered including another theory in the book that would have inflamed Christians even more than the notion that Jesus married Mary Magdalene and made babies. What if Jesus survived the crucifixion? According to this AP Article, "Brown said the theory is backed by a number of 'very credible sources,' but that he ultimately decided it was too flimsy." I'm burned out on the whole Holy Blood, Holy Grail trip though. Brown's next book, set in Washington, revolves around the Masons! Apparently, the dust jacket of The Da Vinci Code contains a clue about the sequel. Link

EFF defending creators of This Land is
Your Land parody
07/29/2004 06:53 AM
I'm proud to relate that EFF is representing Jib Jab, the creators of the wonderful "This Land is Your Land" Flash parody that aroused the ire of the holder of Woody Guthrie's copyrights and resulted in a threatened lawuit. Here's a little bit of my cow-orker Fred von Lohmann's letter to the copyright-holder's lawyers.
In your July 23 letter, you contend that "This Land" offers no "satirical comment" on the Guthrie original. You are mistaken.

While your view of Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land" as being predominantly about "the beauty of the American landscape" and "the disenfranchisement of the underclass" is interesting, most Americans think of the song as an iconic expression of the ideal of national unity. Jib Jab's parody addresses, among other things, the lack of national unity that characterizes our current political climate (ending with the optimistic hope that unity might be rediscovered). In short, "This Land" explores exactly the same themes as the Guthrie original, using the parodic device of contrast and juxtaposition to comment on the original. See Abilene Music v. Sony Music Entertainment, 320 F .Supp.2d 84, 90-91 (S.D.N.Y. 2003) (emphasizing the role of contrast and juxtaposition as parodic devices). The parodic comment takes on an additional dimension of irony when viewed in light of the often omitted closing stanzas of Guthrie's original.

When I first saw them live, I was just stunned when I realized that the song I was hearing at the time was The Car's My Best Friend's Girlfriend." Link

Amardeep Singh says,

My favorite punk cover band was Schlong. Their one full-length LP was a drunk-punk version of "West Side Story" called "Punk Side Story," complete with fighting sound effects, snippets of dialogue, and pictures of drunk-looking bay area punk rockers looking at the moon. They match the soundtrack of "West Side Story" track for track. They don't have a webpage, but you can find reference to them here .
And Bruce Heersen says, "Here's yet another AC/DC cover band: Hayseed Dixie (link). On their debut album A Hillbilly Tribute to AC/DC, they do AC/DC covers bluegrass-style. They have at least one more album that is covers of other rock bands. I've seen these guys live, and they are pretty unbelievable. Really entertaining."

About the bluegrass covers: there is Iron Horse's "Fade to Bluegrass: The Bluegrass Tribute To Metallica" (Link to samples). I think they did a nice job capturing Metallica's peculiar sound. And absolutely worth mentioning (but different kind) are Apocalyptica, that once released "Plays Metallica by four cellos" (link to full album at low bitrate for sampling purpose)

The gritty streets of Sweden are littered with the burnt and twisted carcasses of their many gang members, toppled bun carts, and half-expended tubs of peroxide paste - and now the violence is spreading to the hospitals, or so they would have us believe. Word is that youth who think they need prioritized health care are sending cameraphone picture threats to medical staff. As if nearly-free health care wasn't enough, now they've got to go and get all pissy because they aren't first in line. They ought to come over here and get stabbed - then we can see how much they like waiting in line, filling out the forms to claim you're a one-legged Hasid lesbian.

Also, this particular internet person pictured may not actually be a real Swede gang member, but that's not what Google thinks.

Afro-Punk offices burned, donations

Afro-Punk offices burned, donations
sought
09/19/2004 02:08 PM
Xeni Jardin: The makers of a groundbreaking documentary film exploring racial identity within the punk scene -- Afro-Punk: the "rock n roll nigger" experience -- were hit with an unexpected disaster last week. Friends are reaching out to coordinate donations of space and gear to help the filmmakers get back on track. From an e-mail sent to friends and supporters:
On Monday Sept. 13th at around 2pm the building that houses the afro-punk offices was set on fire. Apparently, the first floor failing clothing store owner, in an act of desperation, set a phone book on fire and took a little walk. Meanwhile Afro-Punk's director James Spooner was two flights up discussing his upcoming panel on music as a tool for black liberation with a colleague. "We heard the bell ringing and a lot of screaming and yelling" says James. The guilty store owner, alerted James and his friend of the blaze below. Thinking quickly James ran back into the office unplugged his Mac tower, which houses the documentary and hobbled down the stairs through the smoke and flames . "Man, maybe it was stupid, but this film has effected too many people for it to all end here, let the rest burn, I had to save it!"

Luckily fire fighters acted quickly on the scene and were able to stabilize the fire. Flames never reached our office but the NYFD destroyed the place trying to make sure the fire wasn't in the walls or ceiling.

After the smoke literally cleared they were allowed back up to access the damage. All in all it could have been worse. The Afro-Punk computers and camera are still working, the 200 hours of footage afro-punk was cut from seems to be okay and the work for our next film is safe. We did lose some furniture, a monitor and some vcrs from our dubbing station, but most tragic, we lost our donated office space.

Link to the Afro-Punk website, link to paypal donation site, and e-mail the group for a list of non-cash donations they're seeking -- including office space, office supplies, and electronic equipment (VCRs, monitors, CD-Rs, DVD-Rs, and the like). (via pho list and Bob Davis of Soul Patrol)

Made it to Orlando and Flying Updates

Made it to Orlando and Flying Updates 04/12/2004 11:13 PM
American made me miss my connection in Dallas, but got me on another flight an hour later. I managed to find the car, find the hotel, find the room, find dinner, find and pickup Derek, and find a little grocery store. Oh, and I found the free WiFi too. It mostly works. The weather for tomorrow looks ungood for a day of soaring Florida. :-( Speaking of flying, I finally updated my neglected flying blog, so you can see what...

Blogging/Roller talk last night in

Blogging/Roller talk last night in
Orlando

I gave my blogging and Roller talk to the combined Orlando and Gainesville Java User Groups last night. I think the talk was pretty well received among the 30 or 40 Java users in attendance, but I've only given a half dozen presentations so I felt a little wobbly. There were a couple of times where I could not find quite the right words to complete a thought, but overall I think I'm improving at public speaking (I just noticed that Sun-U offers a course called "executive presentations" -- maybe I should sign up for that).

The talk was really two talks in one, a blogging talk and a Roller talk. I call the blogging talk "Blogging: What's the Big Deal." It covers the basics of blogging and includes newsfeeds, newsfeed readers, web services API, blogs at work, K-logs, Cluetrain in a nutshell, and blogs for community building. In my opinion, the big deal is simple: blogging technologies make it easy for people and programs to read and write the web. That empowers writers of all varieties and creates lots of opportunities for software developers.

The Roller talk is designed to give potential Roller users an overview of Roller features, the status of the Roller project itself, and Roller architecture/internals. I also include some lessons learned about performance and scalability. The Roller talk is informative, but much less thought provoking than the blogging talk and that was reflected in the number of questions I recieved.

The questions were pretty interesting and almost all concerned blogs at work. Here are the questions and answers I remember:

Q: What role does ownership play in blogs and wikis? Is it really important that you put your name on your blog?. Ownership and identity play an important role in blogs and wikis, but more so blogs. Putting your name on your blog is how you get credit for your writing and the cool links you are pointing out. That said, anonymous bloggers play an important role too. Anonymous bloggers can safely speak more freely than named bloggers and this can be very important in some situations. Anonymous bloggers get credit too and can gain trust and authority by writing well, being honest, gaining readers, and earning links from other bloggers.

Q: Isn't there a risk that employees will be judged by the quantity and quality of their blogs, and we will therefore discriminate against introverts, people who'd rather work than write about working, and folks who's blogs are just not that cool? I guess there is some danger of this. As we do now, we'll have to trust folks to understand that people are different. Some people are quiet and private and prefer to work rather than to write and talk about work. I think this is mitigated by the fact that some folks who are introverts in a social setting might not be so introverted when online or writing in their blogs.

Q: I can understand allowing your employees to blog publicly, but was is the benefit of supporting them by providing them with company servers and support to do so? This question came before I got to my Cluetrain in a nutshell slide, so my answer was that providing employees with public blogs is a way to encourage them to blog and once I explain the Cluetrain you'll understand why I say that is a good thing.

Q: Blogs are essentially UseNet newsgroups "minus minus" without easy way to search all posts on a topic and without threading. Usually, with a new communications medium we move forward, not backwards. Are bloggers concerned about that? Yes, bloggers are concerned with this and there are efforts to make it easier to search blogs (e.g. Feedster) and to support threading of blog-to-blog "conversations" (e.g. permalink based threading in BlogLines and SharpReader). But blogs are a different medium and they don't replace newsgroups and forums. Subscribing to a blog is different that subscribing to a newsgroup. With newsgroups, you subscribe to a topic but with blogs you typically subscribe to a person or a group of people and topics can vary widely. I think that is a good thing; people are more interesting than topics.

Q: Is it possible for a blogger to sell subscriptions to his blog content? I admit that I have not been following the blogging for money discussions very closely, but after some mumbles I managed to come up with a couple of answers.

  • Offer a free newsfeed to alert subscribers of new content, but require them to login to their non-free user account to view they full content.
  • Use a Podcast approach to automatically download newly available content to user, but the downloaded content is in a password protected format.
  • Require login to access your newsfeeds, but users would need a newsreader that can handle authentication.

But, newsfeeds are lossy aren't they. I mean, what happens if a user is offline for a couple of days and the user's newsreader misses some entries because they have already scrolled off the bottom of the newsfeed? Users that are paying for a subscription are going to much less forgiving about missing a couple of items.

That's all the questions I can remember. Slides should be available soon in PDF form on the Orlando JUG site.

When are airports gonna figure this out? If you have wireless Internet service available in your terminals, people actually will pay for it. How hard is that to figure out, really? Murphy has struck again. I dropped off my rental car 2 hours before the scheduled departure of my flight (as advised), got to the airport 7 minutes later, went through security in 5, took the mini-train to my terminal, and found that my flight is departing at 5:48pm instead...
