Toshiba has announced
their new DLP Projector, called the TDP-SC25U. Featuring a detachable
document camera, the projector weighs just 8.6 pounds and maintains a
high level of portability for the roving college professor. It accepts
S-video, component and composite inputs and features a monitor output
connector that lets users see what's being projected onto an external
display. The benefit with this design, as DAPreview points out, is
that it affords the presenter the ability to face his audience while
presenting instead of needing to turn to review his slides. A
suggested price of $1,200 along with a projection distance of up to 33
ft and a diagonal screen size reaching 300 inches makes this projector
quite tempting. Toshiba says that it's shipping now, too.

Toshiba takes a card
from the Transformers deck, developing a laptop with a detachable
display that allows you to convert your laptop into a tablet at a
moment's notice. They've already developed a prototype stylus-operated
display that can be detached which they've been showing off at CeBIT.
Said prototype is a 12.1 inch XGA that communicates with the notebook
"base station" using 802.11b. A big issue appears to be battery life,
as each half needs its own power supply. That and the unit's relative
size are keeping it from being brought to market for now. I guess I'm
having trouble understanding what benefits this setup offers over a
high-performance tablet with a wireless keyboard, but that's just me.
Computerworld has the whole scoop, including an interview with one of
Toshiba's research scientists.

Pocket-Lint
reviews the pleasingly droid-like Toshiba ET1 projector, a relatively
low-quality (848 x 480 pixel) home projector that is most notable for
its swiveling base. The idea is to use the ET1 wherever convenient,
like a coffee table, say. This would be fine if the native resolution
weren't crap -- 800 x 600 is the bare minimum these days as far as I'm
concerned. Pocket-Lint likes it, though, and I suppose for regular
television or videogaming, it'd probably be fine. £1000 just
seems like a lot of money when there are projectors on the market like
the Infocus X2 for even less money.

04/13/2005 09:02 AMToshiba Corp. is working towards doubling the storage capacity of its
0.85-inch hard-disk drive, it said Wednesday. The drive is physically
the smallest available from any disk drive maker. It went into mass
production earlier this year and can store up to 2GB of data in its
first-generation form. Toshiba is currently working on a new version
that will include two disk platters, allowing it to store up to 4GB of
data, said Midori Suzuki, a spokeswoman for Toshiba in Tokyo.

Taking The Camera Out Of The Camera

Taking The Camera Out Of The Camera
Phone
11/04/2003 07:06 PMWe've had a lot of stories in the last six months or so about
shortsighted companies deciding to simply ban camera phones outright.
In the past, I wondered if such rules would have an
impact
a> on mobile phone sales, but I didn't expect the carriers to jump on
this topic so quickly. Put me in the same surprised boat as Alan
Reiter to hear that carriers are convincing mobile phone handset
makers to
offer
multiple versions of their phones: one with a camera and the other
without. I really thought that with only a few companies overreacting
and missing the point about camera phones, it would blow over, and a
decade from now we'd be laughing at silly companies banning camera
phones. At this rate, that might not be true. This is going to be a
huge waste of money. Designing a new phone will take some money, and
will create a phone that offers less value to the customer (and less
opportunity for revenue for the carrier). However as camera phones
begin to find more acceptance in the marketplace, people are going to
get angry when their boss tells them the expensive phone they just
bought can't be brought into the office. They're not going to want to
buy the version without the camera if part of the reason they're
upgrading is for the camera in the first place. This is a (costly)
over reaction to a technology that will do nothing to stop the real
problem (theft of corporate secrets or invasion of privacy), but will
cost lots of money and anger many people.

We don't usually cover
projectors (they're really boring), but here's an Smurf-sized
projector with a lot of moxie. It weighs less than a pound and uses
three LEDs to pound a 250 LUX picture into that enclosed space.
Mitsubishi suggests using the projector in a car or boat, but if you
have enough room to project a video in your car, then you need to
rethink your priorities.

Mitsubishi LVP-XD450 Projector

08/04/2004 07:49 AM
If a DLP (digital light processing) projector is your
cup of tea, Mitsubishi's announcement of the "LVP-XD450" should be
your cup of coffee. According to Mitsubishi, this new projector has
the industry's highest brightness and contrast ratio (2,600 Lumens and
2,200:1 respectively; don't know about "highest," but that is pretty
good). And since the projectors are rated at screens up to 200-inch, I
would be fully willing to review one of these units for anyone who has
one on hand, provided you also supply the screen. I doubt my computer
could actually run Doom III at this projector's 1280 x 1024
resolution, but Pinkydemons would still be life-sized.

Image-Caching Projector
Image-Caching Projector
07/13/2004 11:50 PMHere's an idea I came up with while on a walk tonight. There's a
50-percent chance it's already been invented — if it has, tell
me where to find it.
The world needs a PC projector that will cache the displayed image.
Say I'm tooling through my presentation in front of Mr. Venture
Capitalist and I suddenly need to find something on a Web site.
Now, I don't want Mr. VC to see me fumbling around the Web (I'm
supposed to know what I'm doing, right?), so the only choice I have is
to shut off the projector or suspend the connection from the laptop so
that I can Google without being displayed to the room. Room goes
dark, there's an uncomfortable silence, and it's painfully obvious
that everyone is waiting on me.
But what if I could freeze the image displayed from the projector?
That way, VC and Co. could continue to look at the last slide I was
showing them (my partner would chime in here with something witty to
take the focus off me) and I could search away.
When I finally found what I needed and my screen looked like I
wanted it to, I could resume the projector. Extra points if I could
fade in from the last displayed image to my current screen.
Does this exist? If so, show me. If not, I just gave away a
million dollar idea. That should be engraved on my
tombstone.

Infocus 4805 projector
08/01/2004 03:30 AMSome weeks ago we got an Infocus 4805 projector. I picked that one
because it got good reviews and at $1500 was one of the cheapest 16:9

worth to try out rather than ordering a more expensive one. If you go
higher you are mostly paying for higher resolution, which you can't

Runco VX-2c Video Xtreme Projector
06/29/2004 12:16 PM
With a three-chip
DLP setup and a 16:9 1,280 by 720 native resolution, the Runco VX-2c
can probably be forgiven for its "Video Xtreme" moniker, if just
barely. The VX-2c is also the first to use Runco's LiveLink
technology, which boosts DVI signals so that they can be run without
loss of signal quality in lengths up to 75 feet, which greatly opens
up the possibilities of where you can mount the projector. All in all,
it looks like a fine projector, and as soon as I can get this cut to
stop bleeding, I'll go sell this kidney for the extra $40,000 sale
price.
