Tiny Hard Drive Manufacturers Turn Up
The Heat
07/01/2004 10:48 AM
According to The Inquirer,
Japanese companies are rapidly increasing production of their small
hard drives as, unsurprisingly, the demand for tiny storage that will
fit in portable electronics increases rapidly. Toshiba is planning on
ramping up production of its tiny 0.85-inch hard drives to a rate of
almost 200,000 a month, while Hitachi will increase its 1-inch drive
production to two million units per quarter. Global hard drive markers
shipped 260 million units in fiscal 2003, 80 percent of which went
into servers and PCs. The remaining percentage, which goes into home
electronics, are expected to grow by 50% each year -- I'm betting it
will be even greater than that once the manufacturers can get enough
tiny units into the channels. Two years from now there won't be a
single smartphone announced without a hard drive.

LED flashlight hack
06/17/2004 02:52 PMPopular Science has a simple hack for replacing a
flashlight's bulb with bright white light-emitting diodes.
A flashlight
... hacked to use three 2300-millicandela LEDs will be as bright as an
incandescent and last 5 to 10 times longer. Of course you can add up
to 20 LEDs (as long as they fit in the reflector) if you're planning
to, say, man a lighthouse with the thing.

steep, but the idea is very cool.

Flashlight For A Variety Of Batteries
Flashlight For A Variety Of Batteries
09/15/2004 01:39 PMSometimes it's the simplest ideas that make a lot of sense. As people
in Florida have been stocking up on batteries for their flashlights,
it reminds you how you always need to make sure you have the right
batteries around for your flashlights. They all seem to take
different size batteries, and people always end up with random spare D
or C batteries they don't know what to do with. One company is trying
to solve that problem by creating
a flashlight that will work with AA, C and D
cell batteries with the flick of a switch. They claim the
flashlight will show just as much light with any of the options, but
the weaker batteries won't last as long.

Energizer Quick Switch Flashlight
09/15/2004 01:31 PM
The Energizer Quick Switch flashlight's main
gimmick is the sort of obvious stroke of brilliance that apparently
takes 100 years to develop. It's a regular flashlight that can take
AA, C, or D cells - whatever you've got handy. Obviously, your run
time will vary, but the brightness of the flashlight will remain the
same no matter what. Energizer has already shipped two truckloads of
the flashlights to Florida, although they noted they "weren't planning
on launching this in the middle of the hurricane." (Thanks,
Cletus!)

Blue-light-emitting dental flashlight
better than mouthwash
04/05/2005 06:35 AMCory Doctorow:
Dental-care researchers are proposing a blue-light-emitting
"mini-lightsaber" that you shine on your gums to kill bad bacterial
more effectively than mouthwash.
"Micro-organisms called black-pigmented bacteria (BPB) such as
Porphyromonas gingivalis and Prevotella intermedia have been
implicated in the initiation and progression of gum disease," says
Soukos. Blue light kills these bacteria because it is absorbed by
specific chemical compounds within the bacteria - called
iron-porphyrins - causing a cascade of reactions fatal to the
organism...
Bacteria in the pure culture were killed in seconds, whereas bacteria
in the plaque samples were killed selectively. Those containing
iron-porphyrins were most affected - a beneficial result as it is
iron-porphyrins that help bacteria in harming the gums. It is the
acidic environment produced by the harmful bugs that results in tooth
decay.

Revealed: They're Hard Drive Camcorders
09/14/2004 11:18 AM
Oops, I almost forgot about these new cameras
announced from JVC - the ones they've been hyping up to no end as
their big "mystery product." Basically, they're camcorders with hard
drives in them - a 4GB microdrive, to be exact. They look pretty cool
and everything, but they're really most interesting because they are
the first consumer camcorder with a built-in hard drive, not because
they do anything particularly unique. That being said, I fully support
this idea, and think most consumer recording technology should move to
hard drives as soon as possible (I'll be waiting until you can get
something with a bigger hard drive than 4GB for less than $1,500,
though).
Both models (the GZ-MC100 and the GZ-MC200) can record up to 9Mbps
in MPEG2, though, which is DVD quality.
