Microsoft Announce Data Protection
Manager 2006 Beta
04/12/2005 01:47 PM

In an email sent to existing product testers today, Microsoft announced the upcoming beta of System Center Data Protection Manager 2006.

Data Protection Manager, or DPM, is a software tool aimed at all Windows users to aid the backup and recovery process. Microsoft have long been keen on simplifying this feature in Windows, introducing the system restore functionality with Windows XP.

The software features speedy recovery via disk-based backup systems, allowing "recovering in minutes instead of hours"; continuous protection without impact IT services; integration with tape drives via the Volume Shadow Copy Service API in Windows Server 2003. The company also hopes the software will offer good value for money by letting IT professionals work on other tasks; as many a Windows user / systems administrator will note, the process of backup and recovery is a costly and time intensive one.

Microsoft claim that 30 partners in the storage industry have announced their support for the new software, and will be working on creating solutions for Windows clients. Microsoft will make an official announcement on the launch tomorrow.

Q&A: Microsoft Introduces Microsoft Data
Protection Server
09/20/2004 03:12 PM
For most companies, data backup and recovery is a significantly more pressing issue now than it was just a few years ago. A challenging economic climate, new regulatory mandates, and a greater concern about risks from major disasters, among other factors, are fueling this concern. Fortunately, rapidly declining disk prices are allowing enterprises to augment their data-protection strategies using disk-based backup and recovery technologies, which enable a faster, more manageable and more reliable solution than traditional tape-backup technology. But most of the current disk-based solutions on the market are still cost-prohibitive for many companies, especially small and medium-sized businesses.

Today at the Storage Decisions 2004 conference, Microsoft announced it is entering the disk-based backup and recovery industry with Microsoft Data Protection Server (DPS). DPS is designed to provide robust data protection for the Windows Server System family, reducing complexity and improving operational efficiency for Windows customers. More than 20 storage industry partners today announced their support for Data Protection Server and their intent to work with Microsoft to provide customers with a broad choice of Windows-based storage solutions.

At the storage decisions 2004 conference Bob Mulgia, senior VP of Windows Server said "Data Protection Server has garnered broad industry support because it will help customers of all sizes shrink their recovery time from hours to minutes and drive down the cost of maintaining storage infrastructures."

Microsoft Data Protection Server is currently in beta but is scheduled to be generally available in the second half of 2005.

Currently available in a private beta version, Microsoft Data Protection Server is scheduled to be generally available in the second half of 2005. Bob Muglia, senior vice president of the Windows server division at Microsoft, said customers had complained that backing up and recovering their data was currently labour-intensive and complex.

Symantec to reinforce data protection 08/17/2004 04:52 PM
Symantec plans on Tuesday to announce several security upgrades, with a particular focus on protecting personal information from online thieves. The 2005 upgrades apply to versions of the company's products for consumers and small businesses: Norton AntiVirus, Norton Personal Firewall, Norton AntiSpam and Norton Internet Security.

Norton AntiVirus will bolster worm protection to block home PCs from worm attacks that come through a network, like the MSBlast worm, as well as blended threats, like the Sasser worm. A blended threat is one that relies on multiple methods to propagate.Norton Personal Firewall, meanwhile, will now feature intrusion protection technology, while Norton AntiSpam will include an improved e-mail filtering system. The filtering system is designed to detect e-mail scams, or fraudulent URLs in the body of an e-mail.

Additionally, the company's Norton Internet Security will bundle all consumer security and antivirus offerings into one product. The upgrade will include automatic, real-time notices of high-level security threats, as well as a one-click feature to update the system to ward off the attack.
