Microsoft offering free OS for 'cold'
servers
06/04/2004 10:38 AM
In what could be a sign of things to come, Microsoft Corp. is offering a small sweetener to its Software Assurance licensing program. From this week the company will allow servers used for disaster recovery to carry copies of its Windows server software at no extra cost. A key condition is that the server must be used only for disaster recovery. Microsoft defines such servers as "cold servers", i.e. ones turned off until a disaster arises. The "cold server" provision will be applicable for the remaining term of any two- or three-year Software Assurance contract and is not perpetual.

More Writers Offering Books For Free
Online
04/29/2004 02:42 PM
It appears that it's not only musicians recognizing the power of free publicity from putting their content for free online. While this article ignores the success of more recent authors to release books online (Cory Doctorow, Lawrence Lessig, etc...) in conjunction with their hardcopy release (as well as a number of authors now experimenting with releasing chapters of their books in progress), it appears that a more mainstream novelist, Matthew Reilly, is now releasing his latest novel online for free. He's releasing it in sections, rather than as a single download, but his theory is that it will help get him a bigger audience from readers who previously didn't know about him, or who were unlikely to find his books in bookstores. He hopes that it will encourage people to go out and buy his other books (this is his sixth book, and some of his earlier novels were apparently "best sellers"). Also, his publishing company will publish a hardcopy of this book later this year, after it's already completely free online. Apparently, the idea was entirely his, but his publishing company thinks it's a great idea - though, it may have helped that Reilly sold them the publishing rights for a $1 to get rid of the risk. It doesn't seem like my usual reading material, but if you're interested in what he describes as a "Tom Clancy-Michael Crichton" hybrid, you can download the first two sections of his book at the Hover Car Racer website.

SaunaBlog. I like that name.

However, they seem to have lifted the entire description of what a blog is directly from Wikipedia without attribution, which, as far as I can tell, is a GNU FDL violation. Wikipedia.fi has more.

Also, looking at a sample blog, it seems that they are claiming copyright on anything that anyone writes on their own blog, and apparently they're not making you even agree on a license before you use the service. This is simply wrong - you simply cannot assert copyright on something that you don't own. If you write a blog, you own its content - regardless of who hosts it.

Saunalahti seems to be pretty lax about copyright issues. This will bite them in the ankle, I'm sure.

Sputnik Delivers Software Upgrade,

Sputnik Delivers Software Upgrade,
Hosted Offering
09/21/2004 10:30 AM
Sputnik announced today an upgraded version of its software and a new hosted offering: Sputnik's software allows service providers to centrally manage and track usage on multiple remote Wi-Fi networks. Version 3.0 can now accommodate for very large networks. "With this, you can have one server that manages lots of independent wireless networks and each can have thousands of access points and each is segregated," said David LaDuke, CEO of Sputnik. A service provider could centrally manage, for example, a chain of hotels, a few universities, and several hospitals. The service provider could then allow a local administrator at each location to access network management tools but each administrator would be restricted to managing their own location. Version 3.0 was also designed to offer users plenty of flexibility. It now includes support for RADIUS authentication, in addition to prepaid authentication and device based authentication. Users can run all three simultaneously, setting preferences for which type of authentication is presented to users first. The software also enables flexible network policy management so administrators can set rules that may forbid peer-to-peer connections or block ports or IP addresses. The capability means that providers can set up a walled garden that users can access before they authenticate. Sputnik also introduced today SputnikNet, which makes Sputnik's software available to service providers or businesses on a hosted basis. Customers buy access points from Sputnik and pay a flat $19.95 fee per access point per month for the service. Customers still have the flexibility of employing the authentication and payment method they prefer and can self-brand the offering. Other providers have hosted offerings but they don't always enable self-branding. Surf and Sip, for example, has a hosted offering but the business essentially becomes a Surf and Sip location. Airpath, however, offers a hosted service that allows for self-branding. Sputnik currently has over 300 customers around the globe and its products support hotspots in locations such as Holiday Inns, Comfort Inns, McDonald's, Subway restaurants, Ramada Inns, prominent hospitals, and universities. Existing customers can upgrade to the new software for free. New customers can buy the software and two access points for $599. LaDuke said that he's noticing a change in the way that service providers leverage the capabilities of software platforms like Sputnik's. Instead of building hotspots merely to offer Internet access to customers, network providers are realizing that they can use the wireless network to build...

Mobilization of Software Developers: The Free Software Movement by Margret S. Elliott and Walter Scacchi
http://ope nsource.mit.edu/papers/elliottscacchi2.pdf

Abstract by Author:
Free/open source software (F/OSS) development projects are growing at a rapid rate. Globally dispersed virtual communities with large groups of software developers contribute time and effort often without pay. One force behind this phenomenon is the Free Software Movement (FSM), a 20 year-old social movement whose purpose is to promote the use of free software instead of proprietary software. We show how the ideology of the FSM influences software development work practices in F/OSS communities and how an occupational community of F/OSS developers has emerged from this movement. We present results from an empirical study of a F/OSS development community, GNUenterprise (GNUe) whose purpose is to build an Enterprise Resource Planning system. We show how the beliefs in freedom and freedom of choice, and the values of cooperative work and community building are manifested in the GNUe norms of informal self-management, immediate acceptance of fellow contributors, and open disclosure.

PHP: Free Software on Free Tools

PHP: Free Software on Free Tools 05/17/2004 10:25 AM

Open Source: Open Source Scripting Made Easy: This is an article about PHP scripting tools that makes an important point:

Commercial scripting languages have drawn success from powerful and widely used development tools: ASP has Visual Studio, ColdFusion has Macromedia's Dreamweaver, and JSP has a variety of tools from commercial sources such as Borland and open source projects such as Eclipse and NetBeans. PHP's enormous success, however, is not tied to specific tools.

Some friends of mine have been working with Microsoft's .Net platform. They tell me it's amazing ("fan-friggin'-tastic," one of them called it). This is great, but I guess I don't like anything where the barrier to entry is so high — first you have to have a Windows server, then you have to have the Windows dev environment.

I code PHP in EditPlus, which cost me all of $30, and that was an optional purchase because there are so many other free alternatives. Maybe I'm just a snob. Via PHP|Architect.

Sanity Checking the Free Market

Sanity Checking the Free Market 11/06/2003 01:50 AM
The most dangerous thing in this world is rampant idealism. When righteousness, even well-informed and well-meaning righteousness, gets out of control it can do infinitely more damage than the most depraved or bacchanalian acts performed by a cynic or moderate. We acknowledge this freely in our every day lives, whether we are considering the dangerous idealism of fundamentalist Islamic organizations in the Middle East, of extremist Christian organizations in the Midwest United States or even, to a lesser extent, of organizations such as Greenpeace, the NRA or the FSF. What we value much more than an idealist with tunnel vision is an intelligent person with a slightly cynical eye who can see the value of the ideals but can also see the many places where an exception might be warranted.
