Local Phone Companies Want To Block
In-Coming Mobile Calls
08/16/2004 05:00 AMThe telephone system works because the owners of various networks
agree to accept calls from other networks. What would happen if one
network decided not to accept calls from certain other networks? It
looks like folks in (or calling into) Iowa may find out at some point.
The East Buchanan Telephone Co-op announced plans to
block all calls from mobile phones to its customers, but
he Iowa Utilities Board issued a two-week injunction to stop them from
actually going through with it. Unfortunately, the AP article on the
topic is a little short on details, but some good ones are provided
over on the Interesting People list which gives some
background on interconnect fees. Basically,
what appears to be happening here (which is not at all clear from the
AP article) is that the Co-Op in question is not satisfied with the
interconnect rates they're receiving, and this is more or less a way
for them to go on "strike" until the mobile carriers agree to pay up.
Of course, you'd have to believe that the mobile carriers are in a
much stronger position, having a lot more cash, and (in general) being
somewhat less concerned if calls are getting through to certain
landlines in Iowa. Meanwhile, the customers of the phone companies in
the co-op would immediately blame their own phone company for blocking
perfectly reasonable calls, and may even push them towards competing
phone companies. It is a way for the Co-Op to make some noise to try
to get the much bigger carriers to settle this business dispute, but
they're clearly coming from a much weaker position. Of course, it
also seems highly unlikely that regulators would actually let these
phone companies block calls for very long, as the last thing they want
to do is give other small telcos any ideas that might put up all sorts
of walled gardens in the phone system. Of course, this wouldn't
really be all that different from the VoIP world, where Adelphia and
Frontier were recently (purposely or not)
blockin
g VoIP calls from AT&T.

Google UK Gets Local
Google UK Gets Local
04/12/2005 10:08 AMGoogle's local information service is to be expanded to the UK later
this year. Google Local, as it's called, will search for your nearest
service - be it pizza or an electrician. American users have had
their own local
service for some time, although it's still in beta.
The UK launch had been rumoured for some time, but was confirmed this
week by Holger Meyer, head of Google Germany, Switzerland and Austria,
who said it would be coming "later in the year". Speaking to
the German trade magazine Der Handelsblatt, he said Britain would test
the system before it rolled out over the rest of Europe in the coming
years. "Google Local (which it will be called in all areas and
zones) starts first in Great Britain... and only later in
Germany," he said, but refused to be drawn on further details.
The American service has proved popular since it was launched,
offering maps, addresses, contact numbers and the distance to your
nearest business for a whole range of goods.

02/05/2005 10:16 PMGoogle has taken live on its homepage a new service for locating
local businesses, which scours millions of Web pages and crosschecks
the results with the Yellow Pages data. Google Lo
cal was previously part of the
company's Google Labs development sandbox, but has now been deemed
ready for widespread use.
One example cited by Google is using the service to find an auto
parts store within walking distance. Google Local shows results on an
area map, and can limit results to a specific distance from a user's
starting point. For frequent local searchers, Google remembers the
location in which to look. Although the
service currently only works in the United States and Canada, Google
plans to expand its reach in due time. The company also expects to
provide a way for businesses to add themselves.
Google UK Goes Local, Gets Mapping
Google UK Goes Local, Gets Mapping
04/19/2005 03:28 AMAs predicted just a few days ago, Google has this morning launched UK
versions of its local and mapping services. Yes, you can now find
Pizzas in Plymouth with the aid of everybody's favourite search
engine.
The services appear broadly similar to their US counterparts, and are
apparently accompanied at the launch by a UK version of Google SMS.
Its subdomain isn't yet active, but a direct link (below) works.
There are a few problems with the mapping data though. Some streets
appear fine; however, it appears other areas, particularly where
streets have been redrawn, renamed and so on, throw up some pretty
strange results. Also, there isn't yet a satellite picture service for
the UK.
Posting on the Google Blog, Richard Boardman, Usability Analyst, said:
"I guess my colleagues got tired of my moaning, so I'm delighted
to introduce Google Local UK and Google Maps UK. The Google UK office
and a few of us homesick Brits in California have been helping out
with the development."
