U.S. Relies on Private Security in Iraq
(AP)
04/27/2004 04:37 AM
AP - The blurring of lines between active-duty U.S. soldiers and contracted security personnel is causing unease in Congress, as violence continues to rise in Iraq. Some lawmakers worry that private security forces operate too far outside U.S. military control — and laws. And experts wonder what would happen if a contractor did something tragically wrong, like shoot an Iraqi child.

In 2003, the eight-person marketing team at Ohio Savings Bank launched a search for a management system that would support promotion and branding efforts designed to capture the hearts and wallets of consumers in three states. The Cleveland-based institution wanted a solution that would centrally store, track and cross-reference all marketing-related tasks, contacts, media buys, creative assets and expenses, as well as provide reporting and complete project histories, without excessive user overhead or extensive customization. Their choice: MarketingPilot, a user-friendly marketing application that facilitates efficient project execution and analysis. [PRWEB Jun 18, 2004]

New Twist on Municipal Hotspots

New Twist on Municipal Hotspots 06/28/2004 02:42 PM
Manchester, New Hampshire, plans to announce in mid-July that a hotspot will be available downtown for anyone to use free for one hour: It appears that the city decided it wanted a network and put out a request for proposal. Signull Technologies offered to fund and build the network and then offer one free hour per day per user. An hour a day might be useful for folks who may want to check email during their lunch break or for visitors to town. The agreement sounds like a good way for Signull to pull in potential customers and for the city to offer a useful service for visitors and residents....

New Twist on Combined Wi-Fi/Cellular 12/03/2003 02:42 PM
I'm curious if the writer of this article didn't quite understand the technology: According to this piece, Calypso is marketing a platform that will route calls from a Calypso cell phone over Wi-Fi to a cell phone network. I'm guessing that in reality, Calypso is marketing a platform that offers voice over Wi-Fi when in range of a Wi-Fi network as well as voice over regular cellular networks. Calypso's Web site doesn't go into much detail about how its technology works. China Telecom has spent $500 million on Calypso's platform, which is described here as delivering voice over Wi-Fi and cellular....

Bogus-ify your outgoing caller ID

Bogus-ify your outgoing caller ID 08/31/2004 01:06 AM
Xeni Jardin: Ahoy, stalkers, crank yankers, and evil telemarketer scumbags! Beginning this Wednesday, September 1, US-based online company Star38.com will offer paying subscribers a Caller ID falsification service. Make-believe you're the White House! Or 1-800-CALL-ATT! Or, hell, get your '80s on and vamp out in 867-5309! Kevin Poulsen of SecurityFocus tried it out, and evidently the service checked out as providing what it promised. Users complete an online form with phone number, number they want to call, number they want to appear to be calling from; in a couple of seconds, the system rings back to patch them through to their call destination. But, like, in a secret numeric disguise: call recipients see the spoofed number displayed on Caller ID. Link to Register article (via /., which contains some interesting debate from readers over whether or not the system is a truly effective spoofing mechanism)
