Lian-Li OA F1 All-Aluminum Desk 04/12/2005 07:44 AM

lianli_oa.jpgAluminum folders Lian-Li, best known for their expensive, high-quality PC cases, have announced this doozy of a desk, built to be the ultimate accessory to one of their $300 aluminum cases. Called the 'OA,' almost every bit of the desk is solid, anodized aluminum, available in both natural metal color and black. Little touches include a desktop surface covered with a leather plate and a built-in flash memory card reader and media extender that adds FireWire, USB, and Ethernet right next to the keyboard tray. It's all a little cold, of course, but if you've got around $5,000 handy, UK site Kustom PCs is offering the F1 model for pre-order. (Thanks, Elmer!)

Lian ai zhong de Bao Bei - Baober in
Love

baoberinlove.jpg

Last night, I saw Lian ai zhong de Bao Bei, or "Baober in Love" directed by Shaohong Li. It was a shocking, emotional and amazing love story set in Beijing. The movie captures the stark contrast of the rich and ultra-modern with the poor and traditional parts of the city. Having just spent a few days wandering from ultra-modern buildings to streets with bombed out buildings and meeting some of the young and rich in Beijing, the movie seemed to capture the strange cultural situation that people must be facing in China right now with the explosive growth in the economy. The love story is extremely painful and I think many of my peers had a hard time with it, but I thought the intensity set a tone that I think represents the whiplash the culture must be going through.

The movie reminded me a bit of one of my other favorite films, Swallowtail Butterfly, which is also a story of a young girl raised by hookers in a multicultural/chanpon underground part of Tokyo.

If you liked either one of these films, I would recommend the other.

Lian Li V1000 Aluminum PC Case

Lian Li V1000 Aluminum PC Case 07/13/2004 10:05 AM

< img src="http://www.gizmodo.com/archives/images/lianli_v1000.jpg" alt="lianli_v1000.jpg image" width="440" height="331" class="borderyes" border="0" align="center" vspace="5" hspace="0"/>

We don't normally cover PC cases on Gizmodo, not just because they aren't that interesting, as a rule, but mostly because they are usually just godawful. There are exceptions, thankfully, and this Lian Li V1000 is one of them -- all aluminum, inside and out, with a mesh front and back reminiscent of the PowerMac G5. And while reading the review at PCUnleash might occasionally challenge your English parsing abilities, I think you'll find that the $190 street price of the V1000 almost sounds reasonable when you take into account the fit and finish of a well thought-out case.

The only downside? In my experience, aluminum cases aren't as resilient to frequent hauling as steel-framed cases.

Waterfield Bags launched a SleeveCase designed specifically for the Mac Mini within weeks of the official Apple announcement. In its default configuration as I received it, the SleeveCase is merely what it claims to be, a case into which a Mac Mini will fit. However, Waterfield offers a configuration with a detachable shoulder strap. (read the review) This makes it very comparable to the eM2 bag we reviewed a few weeks ago...

Sendo X UK Review 06/29/2004 08:49 AM

sendo02.jpg imageOur friends at AllAboutSymbian have their review of the late to the game Sendo X, calling it the most desirable Series 60 handset in the world -- this despite the fact that the Sendo X is a Series 60 1.2 phone, and not a 2.0 model. One of its strong suits, they say, is that it looks like a phone, and not an "escapee from the Concept Labs," although the 5-way joypad still leaves something to be desired (it's too easy to hit the wrong button). Another interesting bit is an integrated white LED "flash" that can be used to illuminate a scene without the sucking down the battery like a traditional flash would. All around it looks like an extremely well thought-out phone, and AllAboutSymbian gives it a well thought-out review.

ActiveWin: Far Cry PC - Review

ActiveWin: Far Cry PC - Review 04/15/2004 11:48 AM
FarCry, PC Games, ShootersI have posted up my review of the UBI Soft/Cry Tek first person shooter - Far Cry released last month on the PC. Here is a snippet from the review:

Far Cry is a first person shooter. The first thing to mention is that the game has excellent AI, I can’t say that a game has had as good AI as this since Half Life, and that was released years ago. To give you an idea of the difference this game has compared to others, if you are creeping through the jungle, you can do so without the enemy knowing where you are without actually seeing you, the enemy rely on where they last saw you or where you have been heard. This is even better when you can throw rocks to put the enemy off of your tracks and have them running and looking in a different direction altogether.

RIP, Whole Earth Review

RIP, Whole Earth Review 01/24/2004 03:36 AM
Whole Earth magazine has gone bust (they owe me money!) (and they changed my life!) (and their editorial board insisted on utterly stupid edits to the story they owe me money for!) (and they really did change my life!) (boy, those were stupid edits!). This is bad news.
Whole Earth magazine -- spawn of the amazing Whole Earth Catalogs, source of the WELL, first to mention in print the Gaia Hypothesis, the Internet, Virtual Reality, the Singularity and Burning Man (or at least so the legend goes), the place where folks like Stewart Brand, Kevin Kelly and Howard Rheingold found their voices, and where a whole generation of young commune-kid geeks like myself learned to dream weird -- is no more.

Review: DVD Studio Pro 3 07/09/2004 08:31 PM
“The attraction to Apple’s DVD Studio Pro for me is threefold: ease of use, flexibility and power,” David Nagel writes for Digital Producer magazine. “These three factors came together in one tight, highly intuitive package known as DVD Studio Pro 2 last year, when, for the first time, we gave the program our rare Must Buy recommendation (a first for any DVD authoring system). Now, at version 3, it’s even more powerful, flexible and intuitive than ever.” [Jul 9]

SweepEZE Review

SweepEZE Review 08/08/2004 03:30 PM

sweepeze23.jpg imageFirst of all, the name is horrid. It might not be so bad if searching for "sweep ez" on Google didn't turn up a different product altogether, but it's not like 'SweepEZE' is that strong to begin with. That is, of course, presuming that it is pronounced "Sweep Easy" and not "Sweep Easy E," in which any appeal to the hip-hop crowd is probably mitigated by the uncomfortable image of using an automatic vacuum to sweep up E's cremains. So I'm thinking Sweep Easy is what we're working with here.

I had a Roomba in here last week, reviewing it for another publication, which was actually the first time I'd had one of the robot vacs in my home. I liked it -- I mean, how could you not, with all the bleeps and whoops -- but I don't think I'll be dropping $250 on one quite yet. The main issue was simply that for all its greatness, it kept choking on rug fringe and my girlfriend's panties (my panties were too larger to be inhaled, thankfully), so the "automatic" part of the thing became entirely too hands-on. So back to the broom I went.
