Insurance Company Offering eBay

Insurance Company Offering eBay
Insurance
11/17/2003 04:17 AMEveryone has heard about various eBay scams, and it's making people
increasingly nervous to buy or sell products on the site. So, along
comes an insurance company to try to help alleviate some of the
problems. They're offering
a form of eBay insurance, though it might not work the way
you would expect. It's targeted at eBay power sellers who are willing
to give up a small percentage of each sale for the right to display a
"BuySafe" logo. The logo is supposed to link to a site that will
verify that the logo has been approved. The insurance company
(Hartford) then insures that the buyer will either receive the good -
or the money they paid for the good will be returned. Of course,
they'll only handle claims that occur within 30 days of the sale, so
if the seller keeps telling you to hang on a little while longer, you
might be out of luck. Also, eBay offers their own service like this,
but the fine print is a killer. While the service promises to refund
up to $1,000, it
isn't
$1,000 per purchase, but $1,000 per seller. So, if (as did
happen) a seller with such a logo scams people out of a million
dollars, the company would split $1,000 among all the victims. Not
particularly comforting.

IBM To Offer Web-Based Office Software
IBM To Offer Web-Based Office Software
05/10/2004 04:31 AMMicrosoft's Office productivity suite is facing increasing competition
from folks like StarOffice and it's open source cousin OpenOffice.
There have been a few other small startups like SimDesk that have
won a
few big deals. Now,
IBM is ready to
jump into the market with a web-based office productivity suite.
It includes an email client, a word processor, a spread-sheet and a
personal database offering. What's interesting is that they try to go
beyond just being Office clones by the combination online/offline
system. The software will work offline as a typical client desktop
application, but will also synchronize with a server whenever online -
so you get automatic backups and access from multiple machines.
They're also trying to price it cheaply: $2/user per month - but you
also need to buy the server software. It would be smart (and perhaps
they, or a partner are doing this) to also offer a hosted version for
smaller businesses or individual users, so that they don't have to set
up and maintain the server software themselves. This, obviously, fits
in with IBM's push to make computing more of a utility offering where
IBM just hosts everything and people buy the services and processing
power they need.
Agent-Based Software Development
Agent-Based Software Development
02/10/2004 02:49 AMAgent-Based Software Developmenthttp://www.agentdevelopment.co
m/This new book offers a thorough and comprehensive
explanation of the methods, tools, standards and techniques used to
develop software using the agent-oriented approach. Meeting a long
unmet need to support the agent-software development community with
practical guidance in this cutting-edge area, this authoritative
resource helps you to: understand the issues in developing agent-based
software, select tools and techniques that aid in the development of
agent systems, and become familiar with important methodologies that
can be used to build different types of agent systems.
A
thorough and practical introduction to agent-oriented software
engineering, the book covers four major areas: the basic concepts of
agents that motivate agent technology, available technological support
for deployment of agent systems, industry-relevant initiatives, and
agent methodologies for agent system development. Addressing issues
of
direct relevance to specific development and task objectives,
as well as to industry-wide initiatives, the work is essential for
those wanting to understand more about the commercial realities of
agent-based computing.
