Vintage Photo Archives: Biker Scout

Vintage Photo Archives: Biker Scout

Vintage Photo Archives: Biker Scout 12/02/2003 03:03 AM

The vintage Biker Scout is the plastic testament of Lucasfilm’s faultless evolutionary character design. Even though the traditional Stormtrooper armour still stands as a cinematic icon, today’s addition to the Vintage Photo Archive’s uniform, designed for the Endor sequences of Return Of The Jedi, did away with all the impracticalities of the original shell and replaced it with a uniform that could facilitate its wearer with the ability to effectively protect the interests of the Empire. Not only was it practical for mounted travel via speeder bikes (or any other form of transportation), it also offered the one thing the standard armour didn’t: Flexibility. Granted, the cold weather uniform offered the same, but who wants to fight rebels in a hot Ewok infested forest wearing thermal underwear?

Vintage Photo Archives: 4-LOM

Vintage Photo Archives: 4-LOM 11/14/2003 01:20 AM
Most vintage collectors will argue to no end that Kenner's vintage Star Wars line was flawless, but even the most die-hard out there will agree that the toymaker did mess up once. The mistake in question deals partially with the 4-LOM action figure. It seems that the hard working people at Kenner had somehow mixed his and Zuckuss's names up. As a result, to vintage collectors, today’s addition to the Vintage Photo Archive will always be 4-LOM. But for those of you that read this column daily, it is, of course, all old news…

Vintage Photo Archives: EV-9D9

Vintage Photo Archives: EV-9D9 01/05/2004 02:25 AM
Believe it or not, EV-9D9, the creepy tobacco throated droid from Jabba’s Palace, was actually a female droid! Yes, that’s right, in the old days of Star Wars today’s addition to the Vintage Photo Archive shared the pages of the annual ‘Hot Chicks In A Galaxy Far, Far Away…’ calendar. Humana. Humana. Humana.

Vintage Photo Archives: 8D8

Vintage Photo Archives: 8D8 12/15/2003 02:28 AM
How is it that 8D8, a mute white robot that looks like it belongs on a Pete Townsend album cover could be a popular action figure? Well, in the case of 8D8, there is the whole Star Wars character angle, plus like many kids, this guy liked taking out his aggressions on pool little Power Droids. So it would seem a no-brainer… Well, except that today's addition to the Vintage Photo Archive wasn’t really a popular action figure. Chances are, anyone with hours on their hands (like any toy collector doesn’t have too much of that) could probably still find a couple of these carded at their local mom and pop toy store. Hint: Look behind the Bionic Six action figures in the discount bin.

11/04/2003 02:01 AM
Sure the vintage 2-1B action figure was Johnny-on-the-spot whenever a farm boy needed to get some serious plastic surgery or a new bio-mechanic hand, but what has he done for the Rebellion lately? More than you know pal, more than you'll ever know! For instance, whom do you think the Rebels turn to on New Year's Eve for a designated driver? Who do you think shovels the walks on the Hoth base and scrubs the moss of the Ewok suspension bridges on the Forest moon of Endor? That's right, the good old medical droid, that's who. Today’s addition to the Vintage Photo Archive doesn't mind much though, since it keeps the Rebels off his precious collection of medical gurneys.

Vintage Photo Archives: Zuckuss

Vintage Photo Archives: Zuckuss 11/13/2003 01:59 AM
Most vintage collectors will argue to no end that Kenner's vintage Star Wars line was flawless, but even the most die-hard out there will agree that the toymaker did mess up once. The mistake in question deals partially with the Zuckuss action figure. It seems that the hard working people at Kenner had somehow mixed his and 4-LOM's names up. As a result, to vintage collectors, today’s addition to the Vintage Photo Archive will always be Zuckuss.

Vintage Photo Archives: Lobot

Vintage Photo Archives: Lobot 10/31/2003 01:41 AM
Perhaps the vintage Lobot action figure isn't as exciting as, say, either of the Bespin guards or the Cloud Car pilot, but he certainly was an intriguing character in the film, and that likely had a lot to do with today’s addition to the Vintage Photo Archive’s success on the toy shelves-- That or maybe it was the fancy shirts he had a proclivity for wearing that Star Wars fans went nuts for.

Vintage Photo Archives: The Emperor

Vintage Photo Archives: The Emperor 12/19/2003 11:31 AM
Before he was known as Darth Sidious, our boy went by simply The Emperor. What many people don’t realize though, is that this guy, who was once a simple senator known as Palpatine, had his motivations clearly spelled out to the [soon-to-be] Star Wars Generation before any of the films were even released. As a matter of fact, Sci-Fi fans who picked up the Star Wars: From The Adventures Of Luke Skywalker novel ‘written’ by George Lucas in 1976, were privy to the underlining plot of The Phantom Menace months before A New Hope was released. The book had a small prologue called The Journal Of The Whills, which for the most part is all about today’s addition to the Vintage Photo Archive. Facts are kooky.

Vintage Photo Archives: AT-AT Driver

Vintage Photo Archives: AT-AT Driver 10/28/2003 11:09 PM
The AT-AT Drivers really seemed to have it made. Not only did they have exceptionally well designed outfits to look cool whilst staying warm and toasty in their easy chairs, but they got to drive what is arguably the most incredible vehicle in the Star Wars universe. All other Stormtroopers looked up with envy to today’s addition to the Vintage Photo Archive with nothing but the highest respect, which is really weird since they are all the same dude… Goes to show, you can make a trillion clones from a single nefarious bounty hunter, but none of them are going to be too smart.

Vintage Photo Archives: Romba

Vintage Photo Archives: Romba 01/08/2004 07:14 PM
Romba was a good looking Ewok and he knew it. When compared to all his mates, he’s the only one who doesn’t look like a creepy pint-sized rag-wearing bear with a sharp stick, a fact that likely makes today’s addition to the Vintage Photo Archive popular with all the Ewok hotties. Maybe that’s why this handsome pint-sized rag-wearing bear with a sharp stick always had a smile on his face.

Vintage Photo Archives: Amanaman

Vintage Photo Archives: Amanaman 01/22/2004 02:13 AM
Virtually unheard of in the vintage line, the Amanaman action figure is actually a little too large to be the correct scale. Nonetheless, with it’s ultra accurate sculpt and paint job, not to mention the staff ‘o heads, today’s addition to the Vintage Photo Archive is one of the greatest achievements in the entire Kenner collection.

Vintage Photo Archives: Ugnaught

Vintage Photo Archives: Ugnaught 10/29/2003 02:20 AM
Believe it or not, the vintage Ugnaught action figure was not a peg warmer! Granted the ugly little dudes weren’t the first to fly off the shelves, but sell they still did. When Kenner’s Star Wars line was winding down, collectors were tripping over Endor Leias, and in some regions even Stormtrooper Lukes and Carbonite Hans, but the short guys with the make up cases were no where to be found… Granted, he was technically an army builder –even if it was an army of stunted unsightly pig guys with aprons and purses. Go to the Vintage Photo Archive to see what all the cross-dressing hype was about.

Vintage Photo Archives: Paploo

Vintage Photo Archives: Paploo 01/01/2004 01:03 AM
Along with his good buddy Teebo, Paploo here owned the ewok Village… at least according the Return Of the Jedi novel. Sadly, for whatever reason, today’s addition to the Vintage Photo Archive is represented as nothing g more than a nameless character in the film. Well, a nameless character who stole a speeder Bike and essentially gave the Rebel Alliance the ability to deaf the Evil Galactic Empire that is.

Vintage Photo Archives: Lumat

Vintage Photo Archives: Lumat 01/02/2004 02:23 AM
Technically speaking, Lumat was the last figure released as a Return Of The Jedi figure in North American. This little scrapper and Paploo were the only new figures to see release on the Return Of The Jedi 79 back card, which was the last card back before The Power Of The Force line debuted. Since today’s addition to the Vintage Photo Archive is pictured after Paploo, and he didn’t get to do anything as cool as scoff a Speeder Bike, he gets the honour.

Vintage Photo Archives: Yak Face

Vintage Photo Archives: Yak Face 01/23/2004 03:58 AM
Much like the Vinyl Cape Jawa and Blue Snaggletooth, Yak Face will always be a famous and sought after Star Wars collectible, both from die-hard collectors in the Star Wars community and outside as well. Though considered to be quite rare, eBay has proven to have them available in fairly decent quantities on a nearly daily basis. Nonetheless, it’s perceived to be unbelievably rare –which isn’t all together true- and therefore warrants higher than average prices. On a side note, with this post we finish the first part of our Vintage Photo Archive. Be sure to check out part two coming this summer to a galaxy near you…

Vintage Photo Archives: Warok

Vintage Photo Archives: Warok 01/12/2004 01:50 AM
One would figure that after seven Ewoks, Kenner would have finally been able to get it out of their system, but alas, as this figure proves nothing could be further from the truth. Mind you, one has to wonder what the point of adding Warok to the collection. For the most part, he is nothing more than a better made version of a figure that came out a few month’s earlier (Lumat). From that point of view however, it may be that today’s addition to the Vintage Photo Archive was only the herald to the way of life Star Wars collectors would have to adapt to ten years later…

Vintage Photo Archives: Teebo

Vintage Photo Archives: Teebo 12/23/2003 01:32 AM
If ever there was a reason to read the Return Of The Jedi novel, it would be all the cool bits about Teebo (and his chum Paploo). Even though the film leads one to believe that this is a figure of a background character, nothing could be further from the truth. Granted, one would have to put aside their views on Ewoks all together to fully appreciate this portion of the book, they would find it hard justifying their discontent for these characters after doing so. In the case of today’s addition to the Vintage Photo Archive here, he was actually a very well respected member of the tribe and played a major part in our heroes’ fate. So stop reading this, and –uh-- read that.

Vintage Photo Archives: Pruneface

Vintage Photo Archives: Pruneface 12/10/2003 02:16 AM
Generally speaking, vintage collectors disregard virtually everything the Expanded Universe has offered to the Star Wars community. Even though they still call him Pruneface instead of “Orrimaarko.”, all have to agree that the EU did answer the age old question that overshadows all others in the vintage community: ...Who’s this guy???... With it’s rather ambiguous card back photo, most collectors thought today’s addition to the Vintage Photo Archive was based on one of the myriad characters from Jabba’s Palace who got a millisecond of screen time in Return Of The Jedi. As it turns out, he ended up being a rebel dude from the second act... who only got a millisecond of screen time in Return Of The Jedi.

Vintage Photo Archives: Nikto

Vintage Photo Archives: Nikto 12/16/2003 01:56 AM
Despite how simplistic the vintage Nikto figure appears to be, it is one of the most faithful sculpts to be found in the Kenner line. As a matter of fact, save the yellow lines that were on the character’s pants, today’s addition to the Vintage Photo Archive proves that the people at Kenner were not only very concerned with making top quality toys that best represented the film, they wanted to make toys worthy of the children that they made the toys for. There is little doubt that Kenner ‘really did care’ about more than the bottom line and it showed.

Vintage Photo Archives: Klaatu

Vintage Photo Archives: Klaatu 12/09/2003 02:41 AM
The vintage Klaatu figure may seem like nothing more than a plastic representation of one of the many thugs on the payroll of one Jabba The Hutt. To a vintage variation collector, however, today’s addition to the Vintage Photo Archive is evil... pure, unadulterated evil.

Vintage Photo Archives: Bib Fortuna

Vintage Photo Archives: Bib Fortuna 12/02/2003 12:27 AM
Even though he lived in a nice house in a neighbourhood pretty close to the bright center of the galaxy, Bib Fortuna got teased a lot when he was in junior high. As if it isn’t awkward enough for the poor guy to put up with the challenges of puberty whilst dealing with the fact that he’d never win any beauty contests, today's addition to the Vintage Photo Archive had to deal with having a name that was simply begging to be used against him. It’s no wonder the young wallflower grew up to hang out with smelly do-no-gooders with down right silly names on the planet furthest from.

Vintage Photo Archives: B-Wing Pilot

Vintage Photo Archives: B-Wing Pilot 12/26/2003 01:47 AM
Even though the vintage B-Wing Pilot is one of the more rudimentarily sculpted figures in the line, it does have the distinction of being the very first army-builder rebel pilot. Therefore, what today’s addition to the Vintage Photo Archive lacks in dazzle, it quickly makes up for in kitsch novelty, what with its ability to not only die nameless for the liberation of the galaxy, but to be doing it whilst hurdling towards the Death Star at break-neck speed in a great looking hot rod!

Vintage Photo Archives: ATST Driver

Vintage Photo Archives: ATST Driver 12/24/2003 02:56 AM
Funny thing about the image of Hasbro’s new Endor Han Solo in ATST Disguise in the latest issue of Star Wars Insider is that he’s wearing the full gear traditionally worn by the ATST Driver. Unlike Return Of The Jedi’s director Richard Marquand, who did have the time to dress up for his cowboy shots inside the lead ATST during the filming of the Battle of Endor sequence, our boy Han had a bleeding princess and the entire Rebel fleet being handed their astromech droids on his mind, so it’s not too likely he found the time to play dress up. That being said, had he the time, he’d probably look a lot like today’s addition to the Vintage Photo Archive.

Vintage Photo Archives: Rancor Keeper

Vintage Photo Archives: Rancor Keeper 12/18/2003 02:17 AM
OK, really, what was Kenner thinking when they decided to make the Rancor Keeper. Lets see, a fat, bald, shirtless old white human with a stick; yup, sounds like a big draw for boys ages four and up, don’t it? Needless to say, this is likely the most notable blemish on the toymaker’s near flawless track record. Nonetheless, today’s addition to the Vintage Photo Archive became the world’s quickest and longest lasting peg warmer. For that matter, it’s likely the toy responsible for the phrase.

Vintage Photo Archives: Chief Chirpa

Vintage Photo Archives: Chief Chirpa 12/08/2003 01:11 AM
The vintage Chief Chirpa figure, being a little less distinctive than his Ewok companion that shipped on the Return Of The Jedi 65 back card, served as the first example of Kenner’s ingenious new form of army building. Unlike other figures in the vintage line, today's addition to the Vintage Photo Archive sported a removable hood, and even though it seemed like nothing more than a little added detail, which, once additional Ewoks were added to the line, became a way of creating a huge army simply by switching the hoods and accessories. When all is said and done, that’s something 2048 possible combinations!

Vintage Photo Archives: Gamorrean Guard

Vintage Photo Archives: Gamorrean Guard 12/04/2003 03:46 AM
It boggles the mind how accurate the vintage Gamorrean Guard really is. Even though this figure is a bit out of scale, if given a modern paint job it could easily fit in with the current line. A fact more or less proven when today’s addition to the Vintage Photo Archive here was (sort of) packed out as a new figure in the early Ninties… For the most part, the sculpt was retooled and used to produce the Friar Tuck figure from Kenner’s dismal Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves movie line.

Vintage Photo Archives: Anakin Skywalker

Vintage Photo Archives: Anakin Skywalker 01/16/2004 11:05 AM
Unlike the myriad versions we get these days, the vintage line only had one Anakin Skywalker figure (excluding Darth Vader, natch). Still, this one figure was all that was needed, since the dude didn’t do much in the Classic Trilogy other than be dead and smile a lot…Thankfully, today’s addition to the Vintage Photo Archive fearlessly brought both of those character traits across very well.

Vintage Photo Archives: Rebel Commando

Vintage Photo Archives: Rebel Commando 12/03/2003 01:50 AM
Strange how Kenner considered it integral that the Star Wars line had two different Bespin Security Guards for better army building, yet some how figured that having only one Rebel Commando was acceptable for the Trilogy’s final ground battle. Whatever the toy maker’s reasons were, at least today’s addition to the Vintage Photo Archive had his trusted pal Prune Face and no less than eight Ewoks to help a pitiful little band defeat an entire legion of the Emperor’s best troops.

Vintage Photo Archives: Imperial Gunner

Vintage Photo Archives: Imperial Gunner 01/19/2004 05:04 AM
Though not usually the topic of many conversations, the Imperial Gunner figure is sculpted after the soldiers who worked the weapons of the second death Star and not the first. Eagle-eyed star Wars fans will note that the guys operating the big laser in A new Hope wore large padded chest plates, where the ones in Return Of The Jedi, just like today’s addition to the Vintage Photo Archive, did their evil in non-restrictive black jumpsuits.

Vintage Photo Archives: Imperial
Dignitary

Vintage Photo Archives: Imperial
Dignitary
01/09/2004 09:55 PM
The Imperial Dignitary is the living testament that the Emperor was an impartial employer. Obviously the dictator was hiring these dignitaries based soling on their resumes and not on their appearance. Then again, Palpatine has proven to be a man that loved theatrics in all their ‘Look at me, I’m compensating!!!’glory, so maybe he did hire today’s addition to the Vintage Photo Archive only because he fell out of the ugly tree…

Vintage Photo Archives: Wicket W.
Warrick

Vintage Photo Archives: Wicket W.
Warrick
12/17/2003 02:43 AM
Not since the Yoda Mania of 1980 had the Star Wars Generation been more swelling with ‘cute factor’. That’s right, Wicket W. Warrick was more popular with the girls than a weekend long Felicity marathon, and why not, he was cute. Thankfully, he also played a huge part in the downfall of the Galactic Empire, so guys liked him too. Back in 1983 there was very little Ewok bashing, and for the most part everyone liked them (for those of you reading this who were around back then, it’s OK to admit that you like them too while you read this, no one has to know). Matter of fact, keeping that in perspective, isn’t there another ‘cute’ Star Wars character getting a hard time? today’s addition to the Vintage Photo Archive says “Yub yub, mesa like that guy and you should too.”

Vintage Photo Archives: C-3PO (Removable

11/11/2003 02:25 AM
Arguably, The Empire Strikes Back upped every characters ante, but none quite so much as the prissy protocol droid. That fact, coupled with a cool backpack and nifty ‘action’ feature made the vintage C-3PO (Removable limbs) action figure a sought after toy. Not only that, but retaining the vac-metal finish of the character’s original figure, today’s addition to the Vintage Photo Archive was really given a stage to show his quality; and it was golden.

Vintage Photo Archives: Admiral Ackbar

Vintage Photo Archives: Admiral Ackbar 11/18/2003 01:24 AM
In 1982, to many young Star Wars Aficionados, the vintage Admiral Ackbar action figure was the first glimpse at what the final film had in store for them. The card backs offering the Mon Calamari in exchange of a few small proof of purchases and a couple of dollars, also brought what everyone thought would be the title to the last chapter of the star Wars Saga, until the bearded dude who made it all up changed his mind. So as a Jedi’s ‘Revenge’ became his ‘Return’, today’s addition to the Vintage Photo Archive lead us all into the final battle of good vs. evil.

Vintage Photo Archives: A-Wing Pilot

Vintage Photo Archives: A-Wing Pilot 01/22/2004 02:13 AM
Along with Boba Fett, the A-Wing Pilot action figure was the only unaltered figure to move from the regular Kenner figure assortment into the Droids line. Granted, that line did have an A-wing for today’s addition to the Vintage Photo Archive to pilot, where the regular Kenner assortment did not…

Vintage Photo Archives: Nien Nunb

Vintage Photo Archives: Nien Nunb 12/11/2003 01:40 AM
Nien Nunb certainly was world-renowned for his keen fashion sense, and shortly after the battle of Endor went on to becoming the galaxy’s number one designer of humanoid male active and formal wear. Good thing too, since today’s addition to the Vintage Photo Archive couldn’t even fly a Corillian freighter through a Death Star service tunnel without ripping off a sensor dish…

Vintage Photo Archives: Han Solo (Bespin

Talk about Essential Action figures. Even with the wrong weapon packed with it, the vintage Han Solo (Bespin Outfit) figure is easily the best rendition of the former spice smuggler. Not only is it completely proportionate –something this character’s figures have a hard time being-- it’s darn heroically sculpted. No matter what, this figure, added today to the Vintage Photo Archive, couldn’t have been made any better. Maybe that’s why Kenner had to throw extra gimmicks like material trench coats, big honking Carbonite slabs, and even *gasp!* the proper weapon with their follow up Hans…

The vintage Leia (Hoth Outfit) action figure was the second lead character Kenner produced in their successful Hoth collection. Though not as well sculpted as the other Leia in The Empire Strikes Back line, this is the figure that best represents the character, since she wore this outfit for most of the film. Check this figure, and a couple of its interesting variations added today to the Vintage Photo Archive.

Front and back images of the LucasArts-exclusive Scout Trooper figure recently surfaced online, and brings up a question. Our friends over at POTF2.com have collected the various card variations for the exclusive Scout Trooper figure from the upcoming Star Wars: Battlefront video game. It all has to do with the "Not For Resale" stamp on the front of the card. Click on the thumbnail above for the details. Another possible variation reported earlier is the "clean or dirty" versions of this figure. Most carded samples I've seen are the clean version, although this auction suggests we will also see the dirty version as well.

A recent National Science Foundation press release includes photos and video clips of the latest Scout emergency response robots. Scout is a small (100mm x 35mm) two wheeled, tube-shaped robot containing a video camera, IR range sensors, light sensors, pyroelectric sensors, and two-way radio links that support frequency hopping and encryption. MegaScout is a larger version that will eventually carry manipulator arms, grappling hooks, and may act as a mothership for the smaller scouts. The robots are designed to survive a six story fall or being thrown up to 100 feet into a disaster area. The Scouts are built entirely from off-the-shelf parts. The robots are being deveoped by Nikos Papanikolopoulos and other researchers from the University of Minnesota Distributed Robotics Lab, the University of Pennsylvania GRASP Lab, and the Caltech Robotics Group. More video of the robots performing amazing feats is available on the UMN website.

It’s popcorn time again. You may recall that last year I helped my kids set up an ecommerce site to sell popcorn for their Cub Scout pack. They wanted to understand what I did for a living and this way they got first hand experience.

This year, they’re at it again, and they’ve enhanced the site with a blog. My kids will be blogging about their experiences and what they learn while selling popcorn. The popcorn store is completely functional with payment processing provided by PayPal. Proceeds go toward Cub Scouts, with 73% of your purchase helping Scouting in Northern California. (Disclosure: The Cub Scout pack pays a small commission to my kids.)

Screenshot Scout Tracker tracks Boy Scout advancements towards their Eagle Scout. Scouts can monitor their camping nights, service hours, and leadership. Scoutmasters can let the boys know about incomplete requirements without affecting advancement records. Worksheets created for the scouts are stored in a database for easy view and hide access. Scouts can view the progress of all scouts to enable them to find other scouts who need to work on the same requirement or merit badge. Only leaders and administrators can change data on the site. The best part is that parents and scouts can access their information anytime they want without having to call the Scoutmaster.

This release adds camping and service numbers to the scouts main page. It adds leader reports. The code has been cleaned up.

Card Access's Time-Scout

Card Access's Time-Scout 08/16/2004 12:41 PM

timescout.jpg imageAfter first seeing the Card Access Time-Scout system for locking down electronic devices from kids, I started to write, "Hey, here's an idea, parents: Why don't you grow a pair?" A pair of boobs or testicles, brass perhaps, as it pleased them; I was not picky. But then I realized that one could credit an almost infinite-amount of play time on the $90 swipe-card based timer, giving children the impression of receiving some sort of parental concern, but still allowing them to nurse on the entertainment pap in another room, leaving parents blissfully undistracted.

My next idea? Sleeping pills, coated in caffeine, coated in a delicious Cheddar cheese.
