Cablevision Voom Goes Away
Cablevision Voom Goes Away
12/24/2004 12:18 PMBack in 2002 when Echostar was trying to buy DirecTV, the government
was making some noises about how there wouldn't be any more
competition in the satellite TV space. So, to cook up some
competition, Echostar approached cable provider Cablevision about
startin
g up a weak competitor in the space just to show there was some
competition. Well, the Echostar/DirecTV deal fell apart anyway, but
Cablevision somehow got it in their head that
launchi
ng a satellite was still a good idea, even if there were questions
about how far it could reach (who needs to supply the Western half of
the US anyway?). Then, they decided they would pay for this insanely
expensive, questionable deal by
focusin
g on the high end customers who want things like HDTV. Of course,
there aren't that many of those people out there, and there isn't that
much HDTV content either. It turns out things worked out just about
as badly as everyone expected, and now
Cablevision is looking to sell off
Voom. Who's the expected buyer? Well, none other than
Echostar
, the company who started this whole mess in the first place by
pushing Cablevision to get into the satellite business.

04/11/2005 01:50 PMCablevision late Friday announced that Voom, its high-definition
satellite television service, is shutting down. The announcement ended
a standoff between Charles Dolan, chairman of Cablevision, and his son
James Dolan, CEO of the company. The board agreed that it was time to
drop the venture as it was losing money.

07/21/2004 09:16 AMStarBand, which supplies satellite-based Internet access, announced on
Tuesday a
new
tier of residential service that uses the company's StarBand 481
satellite modem. Previously, residential customers were limited to the
StarBand 360 modem, which offers half the 100kbps upload speeds
attainable by the 481. Customers who choose the new service also
receive download speeds as fast as 500kbps, limited VPN capabilities,
10 free e-mail accounts, free basic Web hosting and a static IP
address for an extra US$4.99 per month. Pricing is $699.99 for the
complete hardware package, which includes the satellite dish and
modem, and a one-year contract with a $89.99 per month fee or a
three-year contract that drops to $79.99 per month in the second year
and $69.99 per month in the third year. As MacCentral posted this
article, StarBand had not yet updated its Web site with the new
residential plan.

broadband Internet access service offers 256Kbps upload speeds and
download speeds up to 1Mbps -- the service is an alternative for users
looking for broadband access who are unable or unwilling to have a
cable or DSL line installed. Starband's 484 modem is compatible with
Mac, Windows, Unix and Linux operating systems, and comes with 15 free
e-mail accounts with a total of 1.9GB of total free storage, 200MB
free basic Web hosting space and one free static IP address. The
system also includes a four-port Ethernet router, and costs from
US$139.99 to $159.99 per month based on term commitment. An additional

Satellite May Offer Fast Bi-Directional
Train Service
09/09/2004 12:29 PM21Net, a UK company, says its technology can enable faster
bi-directional wireless Internet service on trains than other options:
Some other companies offer systems that use the cellular data networks
to send data from trains to the Internet. 21Net says that it can use
satellite links to support a higher speed service. During trials, four
laptops on a train were connected at 700 Kbps each. Wi-Fi on commuter
trips is one place where the business case for fee-based access is
pretty clear. There's a captive audience eager to make use of what
otherwise might be considered wasted time. In other satellite-backhaul
news, a government IT magazine has more details about the network some
troops in Afghanistan set up to improve their Internet access. It
sounds like the kind of network the army should be offering troops.
The soldiers have also hooked up VoIP phones to the network for far
cheaper calling home than the Iridium phones offered by the army....

08/02/2004 02:38 AMDespite a three-year head start, satellite TV providers will lose
their DVR edge over cable companies by 2006, according to
Internet-Based Video Services, a new white paper from research firm
Parks Associates.Although satellite companies began offering DVRs as
early as 1999, they will not be able to overcome the advantages cable
companies have in offering a complete bundle of fully integrated
services. Parks Associates forecasts that, as a result, over one-half
of all DVRs deployed by service providers in 2006 will come from the
