optimization tips
03/22/2005 05:04 PMWith so much attention paid in recent weeks to the Mac conversion of
Doom 3's performance, it's timely that Apple has posted "Optimizing
OpenGL Data Throughput on Mac OS X," a new feature on the Apple
Developer Connection Web site. The information isn't specific to game
developers -- it's practical information suitable to any Mac OS X
developer working on projects that can benefit from faster OpenGL
performance.
Meta-tags, or, the Dublin Meta Core
Meta-tags, or, the Dublin Meta Core
03/17/2005 03:00 AMAs we sort through tags, it'd often be useful to know who created a
particular tag. And when. And in which application. And probably other
stuff also. While some apps remember who created which tag (e.g.,
Flickr), as we begin to aggregate tags, we could use a standard way to
express this tagging metadata...a Dublin Core not for objects but for
tags attached to objects. If this were to happen, it's very likely to
come from the apps that benefit from having standardized tag metadata.
The most obvious suspects are the search engines. (Hmm. I may be
re-having Mary Hodder's...

Handy. Looks like you can isolate a particular directory, so not
everything on the site has to have the same META.

Meta-Luck
06/08/2004 09:10 AMAccording to my dream last night, there truly are objects that bring
good luck to their possessors. Unfortunately, the pool of objects
changes rapidly, so that whether any particular object brings one luck
is itself a matter of luck. (No, I don't believe in lucky charms or
placating the local woodland gods, although tipping heavily does seem
to work.)...

In an item entitled
personal message
deflection, Phil Windley says he'd like to move his
process-related communication out of email and into task-oriented
software. Here's the glitch:
One problem with moving from a single general purpose tool like email
to multiple special purpose tools is split focus. To understand what I
mean, think about RSS. RSS has reduced the number of mailing lists I
subscribe to and consequently reduced my email traffic. Perfect
application, except that now I have to remember to fire up my feed
reader in addition to my mail client. I generally treat it as lower
priority and so I'm reluctant to get high-priority information
delivered by RSS. What happens when there are a dozen special purpose
tools managing my workflow instead of just a linear email list? [Phil Windley's
Enterprise Computinging Weblog]
Indeed. This is why I've always thought that structured interpersonal
messages would turn out to be at least as important as (and maybe more
important than) structured interprocess messages. John Reynolds,
blogging about Esther
Dyson's
meta-mail concept (which Phil's post also alludes to), has a
great example:
