CNET News.com's Michael Kanellos notes that the traditional QWERTY keyboard has been under attack for years. Now there's finally something to give it a run for the money.

IBM Keyboards Still Clackering

IBM Keyboards Still Clackering 06/22/2005 01:57 AM

clickerdydoo.jpgSo this will probably only interest me, but one of my favorite tech writers, Dan from Dan's Data, has written a comprehensive overview of one of my all-time favorite products, the IBM "Clickety Clicker" Keyboard (the ones with the buckling-spring technology). I recently just retired my IBM for a wireless Logitech model, and while I've been pretty happy with the new setup, I'd still give it all up for a wireless IBM keyboard, I think.

Or gosh, a Bluetooth IBM Clickerty with a cradle for my mobile phone. I'm getting goosebumps.

The Rise Of Alternative Keyboards

The Rise Of Alternative Keyboards 07/22/2004 12:57 PM
As we go increasingly mobile, the question of shrinking the keyboard inevitably comes up. There have been all different concepts from the standard tiny thumb keyboard to things like Digit Wireless' Fast Tap technology which sneaks letter keys in between the number keys on a phone keypad. Michael Kanellos at News.com is now messing around with the FrogPad, the one handed portable keyboard that uses "chords" (combinations of keys) to type quickly. The biggest worry most people have is that if they already know how to touch type on a QWERTY keyboard, learning something entirely new will be difficult. He finds that there is, indeed, a noticeable learning curve, but with a little practice you can pick it up pretty quickly. The question, though, is whether or not enough people will want to go through that learning process.

Custom Keyboards For Games, Excel 07/06/2004 01:56 AM
While the idea behind the Ideazon Zboard is very cool, it is ugly as sin and leaves you wondering how this is supposed to make life easier. It fits in to a “base” of sorts, then it is fitted with layovers that are designed for specific games and for Excel. IT might not be so bad I suppose, but reports are that it just “feels” weird, thus hindering any productive use.

Unwashable keyboards full of germs

Unwashable keyboards full of germs 04/12/2005 03:56 AM
Cory Doctorow: Keyboards harbor germs. Shared keyboards harbor other people's germs. Shared keyboards in hospitals harbor other people's disgusting, potentially fatal super-bug germs. PCs are just about the only non-disposable, non-washable things that live in hospital wards and operating theaters, and they are never, ever clean. <eyes Powerbook keyboard distrustfully, posts blog-entry with a pencil-eraser, compulsively washes hands for rest of night>
"The difficulty with keyboards is you can't pour bleach on them," Dr. Allison McGeer, an infection control specialist from Toronto's Mount Sinai Hospital, tells The Canadian Press. "They don't work so well when you do that.''

She noted another Toronto-area hospital had to throw out their keyboards when it was battling an outbreak of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus, or VRE.

"We could not get the keyboards clean," McGeer says.

Product Review: Ergonomic Keyboards that
Break an Old Rule
06/05/2005 11:37 PM

“A decade ago, there was much talk about keyboards causing repetitive motion injuries. Attention was focused on ergonomics and leading manufacturers including Microsoft introduced special curved and split keyboards. If you’re like me, though, those keyboards didn’t solve the problem. Months ago, I started getting tingling and numbness is my lower left arm, probably the result of typing. It wasn’t painful, but the odd feeling occasionally made it hard to sleep. The phenomenon isn’t uncommon…

Yamaha CVP Keyboards: First Electronic
Piano with Realtime Streaming
08/21/2004 09:11 AM

yamaha_keyboard.jpg imageKeyboardists will appreciate Yamaha's new "CVP" series of electronic pianos and keyboards, providing they can afford the ~$5,000 USD these cost. The most prominent new feature of this series is direct streaming - meaning, you can not only connect to Yamaha's site directly from the keyboard and play live songs, but you can also broadcast your own renditions realtime. I can't really imagine an era where we attend concerts over the net, at least until we work out some latency issues, but I guess this would be an effective way to form a student-teacher relationship online. Then again, with all the features these offer, why do you need a teacher?

Ideazon Zboard: Custom Keyboards For

bhdCloseups.jpg image

I haven't used one, so I'm loathe to haterate it yet, but the Ideazon Zboard looks like a good idea that might not be as well executed as I'd like. The folding keyboards fit into a "Universal Base," overlaying the keyboard internals with custom layouts designed to maximize your gaming (or business software using) abilities. It's not a bad idea; it's sort of like those old cardboard cutouts that used to come with games back when everyone had the same shaped keyboard, but where it seems to start sucking is in the most important area -- the way it feels. I'll reserve judgement for now, but the word on the street isn't that good.

Plus, look at the one here, for Black Hawk Down. What happens if I want to type to my friends online? If I'm in the middle of a hot duel, I don't have time to look down and find where the "VAV" keys are.

keyboards remained quite busy
09/01/2004 03:59 AM
Day seven of aKademy here in Ludwigsburg (Stuttgart region), Germany, saw KDE developers finally tackle the tricky question of release schedules and whether they should skip straight to KDE 4 or have an interim release of KDE 3.4. Plans for SVGs in KDE theming were discussed, with some welcome news for those who have been waiting for graphical goodies. And as the name of this section -- coding marathon -- of the summit implies, keyboards remained busy all day.
