The Not-So-Good Book

The Not-So-Good Book

The Not-So-Good Book 12/02/2003 01:59 AM

God has a good case for a libel suit based on the Bible, according to ventriloquist and long-time Tigger voice Paul Winchell: "The Old Testament maligns the meaning of God and deprives us of a loving image. There is no doubt in my mind that Scripture defames the essence of God." (11-29)

If the success of an open source project can be measured by the number of third-party books about it, then OpenOffice.org is thriving. Not only is OpenOffice.org represented by a dozen books and pieces of training material on Amazon.com, but interest in OpenOffice.org is widespread enough that each of the books is geared to a slightly different audience. This article gives an overview of four of the current OpenOffice.org books, ending with a suggestion of which to buy for your own needs.

Book Publishers Selling Direct - Pissing

Book Publishers Selling Direct - Pissing
Off Book Retailers
02/13/2004 05:52 AM
One of the struggles that companies have as distribution and sales mechanisms change is handling legacy channel conflict issues. Dell became huge by selling direct to customers, but when rival Compaq started to move in that direction, their retail partners freaked out - and Compaq had to scale back their plans. It appears that book publishers are now going through the same process. They've realized that if someone is looking for info about certain books on their site, it makes sense to also offer them a chance to buy it. However, it's pissing off retailers, who don't want to hear that their suppliers are competing with them. Retailers say a reasonable compromise would be having the publishers point to the retailers, which was my first response as well. However, then it becomes a political situation of who do you link to and why? There's also the fact that this makes for a less enjoyable consumer experience. I know that, more than once, I've been annoyed at online sites where I go for info on buying a product, but when I try to buy am given a big list of retailers instead of a way to buy right away.

Unitarianism: good enough for two
presidents, not good enough for Texas
05/19/2004 02:47 AM
The state of Texas has denied Unitarians tax-exempt religious status because the church "does not have one system of belief." As Julia notes, Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams were sufficiently convinced of the Unitarians' religiosity that they actually were Unitarians.
Never before -- not in this state or any other -- has a government agency denied Unitarians tax-exempt status because of the group's religious philosophy, church officials say. Strayhorn's ruling clearly infringes upon religious liberties, said Dan Althoff, board president for the Denison congregation that was rejected for tax exemption by the comptroller's office.

GM in trouble: "If you erased the company name from the balance sheet and showed it to a forensic accountant, the recommended treatment would probably be to seek protection from creditors by filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. " GM's troubles are as much a result of the exploding costs of health care as they are due to the company's dropping market share. In Canada increasing health care costs (PDF with many charts) are taking a greater and greater share of government expenditures. In the US it's hurting big employers and regular people. But either way the problem doesn't seem likely to get better any time soon.

Repeat After Me: A Book is a Book

Repeat After Me: A Book is a Book 07/13/2004 03:49 PM
This NY Times piece compares Amazon.com with Napster. Huh? The odd logic is that used books sold online are cutting into sales of new books, which may or may not be true. But the Napster comparison is ludicrous for some obvious reasons, including the fact that an actual book is not a digitized song, and that if I'm holding a specific book you are not holding the same copy. The Times piece is about the "doctrine of first sale," which basically says that once a work is sold, it's gone from the creator's control. The purchaser of the item can resell it, give it away or throw it in the garbage, if that's what he wants to do. Copyright holders have never liked this very much, and I can sympathize. Visual artists who see escalating prices for works they sold at bargain when they were starting out tend to really not like this situation. But the doctrine of first sale is vastly better than the alternative. The idea that the copyright owner should get a cut every time a book changes hands is a Pandora's box. It's also just what copyright industry would like to see happen, and that's what the entertainment industry is trying to create with its various digital restrictions technologies. The industry wants a pay-per-use world of arts and letters. Resist. And let's please not equate selling a used book with copyright infringement.

This will be a good comic... good
enough?
01/05/2005 06:52 PM
ComicsFilter (but bear with me): Frank Miller & Jim Lee will be the writer and artist, respectively, of All-Star Batman and Robin, a new miniseries intended to make the characters simple, interesting, and easy to follow after decades of backstory. Grant Morrison & Frank Quitely were announced to be doing the same thing on All-Star Superman, and any comics fan will tell you that these four guys are some of the best in the entire field. Between these two projects, DC Comics most likely has the top-selling books in the tiny comics industry sewn up for most of 2005, which is reason enough to publish them.

But there's also a question for non-comics readers here at MeFi: DC are really doing this for you. They want new readers (best-selling comics are lucky to top 150,000 copies these days), and they think publishing accessible comic books linked to the release of large movies (The Christopher Nolan film Batman Begins, based in part on Frank Miller's Batman: Year One, will be released roughly alongside All-Star Batman & Robin) is the way to do it. But is there a snowball's chance in hell you'd read something like this? Would your kids, if you have them, be interested, do you think? (Frank Miller, it bears noting, is also the creator and co-director of Sin City, a film you might've seen a preview for recently -- truly insane cast.)

Same song, different lyrics. Mikey Smith put out an MP3 of two Nickelback hits, one in each channel, showing them to be basically the same song (original thread). This All Things Considered story shows he's been on the project since then, and the problem is more widespread than it seems.

Paul Boutin on Make 03/29/2005 05:20 PM
Mark Frauenfelder: Slate's Paul Boutin wrote a great review of Make magazine today.
The best magazines build a facade of practical information but really exist to let you enjoy your interests vicariously. No one picks up Car and Driver to decide whether to buy a Ferrari or an Aston Martin—we all just want to read about racing them through the Alps. Most gadget magazines are heavy on photos of the latest Nokias and Sonys—glossy photos from the front and the side and close-ups on the shiny, silver buttons. Make is for people who don't care about what stuff looks like in the outside. It's for the tinkerers who dream of overclocking the real world with Silly Putty and a soldering iron.

Following is an exchange from 2lmc from this morning, truncated slightly and with real names attached because I think there's a difference between being vindictive, unpleasant, rude and trollish in the privacy of IRC and doing it publically on the web (particularly when you link through to the person that you're going to call a fucking moron, thereby guaranteeing that he's going to read it). Seems to me that if you're going to be a shit on the web then you should at least have the guts to use your real name and take responsibility for it:

Tom Insam: alternate command-tab proposal...
Paul Mison: In which kottke shows he fundamentally misunderstands the Mac OS app paradigm? Yes, that would be it. Fucking moron
{chunk edited out}
Paul Mison: Crucially, it does honour the app/window paradigm. (Sorry, it's the best word.) Kottke disagrees: he uses the word 'clunky' about the current behaviour. But then, this proves he's a moron, so...

The original is here if you want to compare and contrast. Tom Insam's website is jerakeen.org and Paul Mison's is husk.org

May There Be More Paul Watsons in the
World
04/24/2004 03:49 PM

Tech sleuth tracked down Net flaw just for the `thrill': A good article about Paul Watson, the guy who identified the TCP vulnerability. He's a peach of a guy, it turns out. After he discovered the problem, he didn't try to make a buck or cash in on some instant fame:

Watson sent his findings to Cisco, the world's biggest seller of Internet routers. Early this year, the San Jose company turned it over to the Department of Homeland Security's U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team (CERT) and then to Britain's National Infrastructure Security Co-ordination Centre.

From there, computer equipment makers and Internet service providers were warned about the vulnerability.

May there be more people like him.
